About MOCSEM The Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan (MOCSEM) was founded in November 1975 by a group of individuals with the desire to protect and preserve the Ford Mustang as one of the most attractive and fun filled cars ever made. We are enthusiasts of all ages with a love affair with the many generations of America’s Premiere Pony Car. Whether it’s a coupe, convertible or fastback from 1964½ to the current model or the 2004 Cobra, we love them all. The mission of club members is to collect, restore, and preserve the history of the Mustang along with the stories of the people and the roles that they played in making this one of the great cars of the 20th Century. Although ownership is not a requirement for membership, your enthusiasm, expertise, and / or love of the automobile are most welcome. Many of our club members own one or more Mustangs in varying body styles, models and years. Club members are always exchanging information, providing sources for parts, literature and helpful hints for restoring or maintaining their Mustangs. Our members are a diverse group of individuals, located throughout Southeastern Michigan and all share a great appreciation for the Ford Mustang. Our general membership meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month. Our monthly newsletter, The Accelerator, provides the members with reports on club activities, technical information,

advertisements and business service locations and more. Some club activities include car shows, picnics, sporting events, cruise nights and technical sessions.

General Meetings General membership meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 pm at:

Warren Valley Banquet Center 26116 W. Warren Ave. Dearborn Heights, MI (313) 561-1040

A buffet dinner will be served at 6:30 pm for $13 per-person which includes beverages. So come early and socialize over dinner. The dinner menu will vary every month and will be published on the event calendar at www.mocsem.com. General meetings are open to the public and are a great chance to learn more about the club.

Mustang Heroes

By Lonnie Brammer MOCSEM Vice President

As we celebrate our Mustang Heroes and listen to their stories and experiences about working on the Mustang and at Ford, I am reminded of my personal hero growing up. He was a man who worked in Experimental Engine at Ford Motor Company for over 40 years. They built many types of engines that powered everything from a farmer’s tractor to a trucker’s Big Rig Truck. They also cut up an In-Line Four Cylinder Engine and welded the pieces back together to create the In-Line Six. Those were cool but I most enjoyed hearing about the Mustang’s small and big blocks where speed forced you back into your seat and made your heart race when that accelerator hit the floor. We all know it can look good, but if it’s not fast what's the point!

One of the stories my hero would tell me was about the fact that he was on the team that built and maintained the engines that broke speed records and won the 1965 Indianapolis 500. You’ve seen the car if you have ever been in the Henry Ford Museum, as it is on display there. So in my opinion,

they were Ford Racing before there really was Ford Racing. You can you imagine what it was like as a little four year old child that played with his Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars all over the living room floor and your Dad walks in with a trophy. It was the model of an engine with a blue plaque, the ’65 winning engine. He said, “this is your dads now don’t touch.” Today it sits on my desk where I cherish it and that memory. It's amazing all the different stories I've heard over the years from my Ford hero, Keith Brammer. He is my Father, the man that helped me become the true Ford blue blood that I am today. Thanks Dad and Happy Father's Day. Lonnie Brammer

MOCSEM MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Sarah Cassette’s 1968 Shelby GT 500 KR

My love for Mustangs started when my Father purchased a 1968 Shelby GT 500 KR. I was in high school and though I had heard him talking about the car a lot, as he had been looking for a Shelby for years, I didn't think much of it. I just knew he was looking for an older muscle car. I still remember coming home from school the day he brought it home. I walked into the garage and thought "this is something different." I remember how unusual the low roof line seemed. I had never seen anything like it, then he started it up, and I knew I hadn't ever heard anything like it either. As I began to learn more about the car, my appreciation for it and the history behind it grew. I worked with my Dad in the garage growing up, helping out with the family vehicles and this one was no different. He let me help with what I could, which I always enjoyed; and on those beautiful summer nights, our family would pile into the car for an evening cruise. We did cruises and shows on the weekends in the summer and eagerly awaited the nice weather during the winter months. I could never have imagined owning that car. Then one day several years ago, he told me that as I had always helped him and he knew how much I enjoyed the car, he was signing it over to me. Since then, my love for the car and hobby has done nothing but grow. When I met my now husband, he seemed surprised at my interest in the car as he had a Mustang himself. Originally he had a 2003 GT that I ended up helping him work on occasionally as well. I never thought he would part with it until he heard about the revival of the Boss Mustang. So, he went about selling the GT and ordered our 2013 Laguna Seca. We all still love to get out to shows as much as we can as Mustangs are most certainly a passion for our families. They remind us of good times spent together, journeys taken together and more good times to come.

MOCSEM Spring Cruise to Gale Halderman’s Barn By Jennifer Smith, MOCSEM Social Director

On Saturday, May 30th, 2015, mustang hero Gale Halderman was so gracious to open up his unique and personal collection in his barn again this year. His collection is varied and contains not only Mustangs, but his personal sketches, Ford and Mustang memorabilia, cameras and photography, a classic Farmall tractor, motorized bicycles and a Cushman scooter. We also had more Mustang Heroes on hand as well. Guiliano Zuccato, a clay modeler for the original Mustang and Gail Wise and her husband, Tom. Gail bought the first Mustang two days before they went on sale to the public in April 1964 and proudly still owns the car today. Guiliano also officially donated to Gale’s museum his personal clay modeling tools used to create the 1964 Mustang at the event. In addition to the group photograph, they kindly signed autographs for us all day along. Members were treated to a complimentary pig roast lunch sponsored by the club. It was a memorable experience by all who attended.

Racers Corner By Becki Belcher

7th Annual Borla Exhaust NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals Atlanta Dragway Commerce, GA April 9-10, 2015 As we cranked into round 2 of the NMRA racing season, competition was in full swing at the Atlanta Dragway. Racers’ testing and tuning their cars as the 7th Annual Borla Exhaust NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals set off. This wall to wall action is presented by Miller Welders. The All-Ford series draws in some of the fastest Mustangs and Fords from all over. The best Ford has to offer in performance cars and trucks from VP Racing Fuels Street Outlaws to Cobra Jets and new 2015 Mustangs.

Fanatics are indulged in blue oval royal treatment. Accompanied with the NMRA this series was the NMCA Flowmaster Musclecar series. All types of American muscle cars, including early and late model Camaros, Challengers

and more. Scott Holdridge in his "Fifty Cal" Jet Dragster also made a few exhibition runs, which is capable of doing 300 mph. As many of us enjoyed all the action on the track, we did not forget to check out the UPR Products NMRA Car Show, held at each event on Saturday and Sunday.

With two races down and the winter blues nothing but a distant memory, adrenaline junkies are kicking their habits into overdrive with the third race vastly approaching. From crazy power to the skill needed to traverse the quarter-mile, some of the wildest action of the season has yet to come. As the engines cooled off and the racers hit the open road, we were left with a clear image of the fast, the good, and the determination of the rookies.

Furthermore a taste of what is in store for the upcoming months of drag racing. They came; they raced, and cannot wait to do it all over again. Atlanta Dragway was the second stop on the NMRA Drag Racing tour and one we won’t forget it any time soon.

Coyote Power for

Revology Mustang Augusta, GA – A powerful new 420 hp engine is coming to the world’s first replica Mustang, built by Revology Cars, the Florida-based specialty automobile manufacturer. After making headlines recently with the introduction of its brand-new and thoroughly updated replica of the original Ford Mustang, Revology announced today a new version of the car, featuring an even more powerful V8 engine, the Ford 5.0L Ti-VCT, commonly known as the “Coyote”. The Coyote engine used in the Revology Mustang is a version of the same engine used in the 2015 Mustang GT. It features an aluminum block and heads and dual overhead cams with independent variable cam timing, and puts out 420hp and 390 lb ft of torque. The Coyote-powered Revology Mustang joins the model line-up above the 5.0L EFI V8 powered car, as the new flagship for the company. Tom Scarpello, founder and CEO of Revology, says: “While the 5.0L EFI V8 in our base model offers excellent performance, some customers want even more. So we are giving it to them.” The power to weight ratio of an automobile largely defines its performance characteristics. “The power to weight ratio of the

Coyote-powered Revology Mustang will be better than a new Porsche 911, and approaching that of a new Corvette,” notes Scarpello. “The performance is really quite impressive, with this state-of-the-art engine in a classic Mustang body.” Along with the new engine, the latest Revology Mustang model makes other significant advances. “You can’t just add power, and keep everything else the same,” says Nathan Loucks, Revology vehicle integration supervisor. “You have to methodically go through every sub-system of the car to be sure it is optimized for the revised power output.” A stiffened body, larger brakes, a heavier duty driveline and larger exhaust are among the modifications. One of the most noticeable changes is the standard 17-inch wheel on the Coyote-engined model. “We had to fit a much larger wheel and tire package with the Coyote, because without it, the car would be severely traction-limited. Also, the larger wheels allow for bigger brakes, which are a must with this kind of performance,” adds Loucks. The Coyote engine is physically much larger than the 5.0L EFI V8, necessitating a re-think of the packaging in the narrow engine bay of the early Mustang. “It is a bit of a challenge,” says Dan Maas, Revology’s technical director. “It is easy to free up space by moving to a compromised front suspension design, but we didn’t go that route. We’ve managed to not only package the engine, but we’ve positioned it for optimal front/rear weight distribution and kept the superior suspension geometry that delivers the ride and handling of a modern car.”

The Coyote version of the Revology Mustang replica is available with either an electronically controlled automatic or a six-speed manual transmission. As in the base car, the front suspension is MacPherson strut and the rear end is a three-link design, with coil springs. Larger four-wheel disc brakes inspire confidence, while standard power rack and pinion steering provides excellent feedback. All of the modern creature comforts are featured, including remote keyless entry, power door locks, power windows, power seats, tilt steering column, intermittent wipers, digital message center, remote trunk release, and even Bluetooth, all carefully integrated into the interior to be minimally intrusive. Like the 5.0L EFI powered car, the Revology Mustang Coyote is designed to be as reliable and easy to drive as a modern car. Pricing for the Revology Mustang replica with Coyote power will be announced later this year. Scarpello notes that the increase over the base car’s starting price of $119,500 will be“reasonable and in line with customer expectations for such a unique specialty car.” Please call (800) 974-4463 or visit www.revologycars.com for details.

A Mid-Engine Boss 429

Mustang? Yes, It’s True

Written by Bill McGuire, hotrod.com May 18, 2015 Contributors: Ford Motor Company

In 1969, Ford Motor Co. built an experimental, mid-engine version of the Boss 429 Mustang. Here's the story behind this intriguing machine. Known internally as the LID Mustang, this unique project was the work of Ford Motor Company's Special Vehicles section and Kar Kraft, its private Detroit-area engineering facility. (Kar Kraft was ostensibly an independent contractor but had only a single client: Ford.) The LID acronym was short for Low Investment Drivetrain—an experiment to produce a mid-engine Mustang on a budget. Instead of an exotic European-style transaxle like, say, the Ford GT, this project used as many Ford production components as possible. One well-known issue with the stock Boss 429 (1,358 examples produced in 1969-70) was its nose-heavy weight distribution, the result of wedging the big 429 cubic-inch 385-series V8, complete with iron block and iron hemi heads, between the front shock towers of a lightweight Mustang coupe. To address this shortcoming, the LID concept simply relocated the powertrain from the front to the rear of the chassis. In a nutshell, here’s how it was done.

A bone-stock Boss 429 engine and Ford C6 automatic transmission were turned around backward and installed in a removable rear subframe, with the engine centered directly over the rear axle. A unique transfer case, built by or for FoMoCo especially for this project, re-directed the output 180 degrees and sent it to a 9-inch Ford rear axle, which was converted to independent suspension with fabricated half shafts and u-joints. A specially cast axle housing incorporated an engine mount and pickup points for the Koni coilover shocks and rear control arms. Simple and straightforward, the drop-out drivetrain module was obviously devised with assembly-line production in mind.

There was little about the LID Mustang’s outside appearance to give away the revised engine location—but interestingly, the exterior was trimmed out not as a Boss 429 but as a Mach I. The stamped steel wheels, eight inches wide at the rear and six inches in the front, were reverse offset (Toronado style, in other words) to maintain stock track width, then camouflaged with full wheel covers taken from the Lincoln parts bin. The space formerly occupied by the rear seat was upholstered in black carpeting to match the rest of the cabin. Meanwhile, the battery, radiator, and air-conditioning condenser were located up front in the former engine compartment, with electric fans to provide cooling.

To allow service access to the big Boss V8 out back, the fastback rear glass was replaced with a Sports Slat louver assembly equipped with hinges and folding struts. The LID project accomplished its primary goal perfectly: The Boss 429's weight distribution was improved from 60/40 percent front bias to 40/60 rear. But except for a near-elimination of wheelspin, the Ford engineers discovered there was no meaningful improvement in performance. With no justification for the car’s production, the LID Mustang experiment was effectively ended. So what became of the one and only mid-engine Boss 429? A short article in the December 1970 issue of Motor Trend indicated that the car was at that point headed for the shredder. However, some old timers at Ford doubt that story. As they remember it, the paperwork procedure for the disposal of prototype vehicles was notoriously lax. The car simply could have disappeared, they say, without management being any the wiser. One source claims the LID Mustang was stolen; another says the car languished on a scrap lot at the Dearborn Proving Grounds for a year or two, then just vanished. Could the one-of-one mid-engine Mustang be stashed away in a home garage in Dearborn or Allen Park, awaiting its return to the light of day? Maybe someday we will know.

Check out Mac’s Motor City Garage Former Hot Rod magazine Detroit Editor Bill McGuire has created a very interesting website, MacsMotorCityGarage.com, that goes far beyond mainstream automotive performance information, with behind the scenes stuff like this mid-engine Boss 429 Mustang item. As McGuire describes it, “Here's your source for industry news and gossip, automotive history, technology, racing, shop talk, hot rods, and collector car news.”
