The mission of the Lloyd Center is to instill a life-long respect and affection for nature in people of all ages through research and education;

to advance a scientific and public understanding of our coastal ecosystems and the need to protect them; and to promote

a legacy of natural diversity largely in, but not restricted to, the coastal environments of southeastern New England.

Protecting nature through research, education and outreach

A n n u a l R e p o r t 2 0 1 3

A Message from the Chairman of the Board and the Executive Director:

We are pleased to report on a truly exceptional year at the Lloyd Center for the Environment.

Over the course of 2013, the Lloyd Center staff provided education programs to over 12,000 students from 47

different public and private schools across Massachusetts and Rhode Island, with almost 50% of the education

programs provided to low-income, high-need students. Our member-supported Dartmouth, Massachusetts

Visitor Center/82-acre preserve attracted over 25,000 visitors. Every day, our research staff worked to monitor

threatened and endangered species throughout the Commonwealth and beyond.

Thank you for your generous support, which makes all this possible.

2013 was also a year of change at the Lloyd Center. We celebrated the tenure of D’Arcy G. MacMahon,

Executive Director and Robert ‘Brodie’ MacGregor, Chairman of the Board, as we move into the future with

our roots planted firmly in the ground. The tradition of excellence in exceptional environmental research,

education and outreach that spans over 3o years has been well established thanks, in part, to their leadership.

We are exceedingly grateful to the committed staff, talented board of directors and cadre of volunteers who

have made 2013 a year of growth and new beginnings.

Rachel Stronach, Executive Director & CEO George R. Nelson, M.D., Chair

The past third of a century has seen the Lloyd Center grow from a small environmental “studies” organization to a dynamic membership-

supported institution, whose research and education services are increasingly sought by educators, government agencies and citizens

throughout New England.

Founded in 1978 and situated with its headquarters and spectacular nature preserve overlooking the scenic Slocum River estuary in

Dartmouth, the Lloyd Center has achieved a well-earned reputation for excellence in environmental research and education. Through

its innovative outreach programs, it has established itself as a highly regarded leader in the ongoing effort to raise awareness of the area’s

fragile coastal resources and the importance of protecting them.

At its 82-acre nature preserve, comprising pristine salt marsh, maritime forest and undisturbed wetlands, in one of the most unspoiled

reaches of southeastern New England, the Visitor Center is open from 10am to 4pm, Tuesday through Saturday (plus Sundays, June-

September). Here, aquarium exhibits offer close-up views of live freshwater and saltwater species of fish and other marine critters. The

Visitor Center is also home to a fascinating collection of live local reptiles, many representing endangered species, being “head-started”

and readied for release back into their natural environment. At the always-popular touch-tank, youngsters learn the hands-on joy of

socializing with gentle spider crabs, elusive minnows, sea stars, whelks, hermit crabs, periwinkles and mussels.

Our majestic Red-shouldered Hawk continues to be our main “Raptor-in-Residence”. Discovered permanently disabled in nearby woods,

she was rescued by Lloyd Center naturalists and nursed back to health. Although not here as an “exhibit”, this magnificent bird of prey,

having been painstakingly “socialized” by members of our teaching staff, is now being introduced to thousands of wide-eyed children,

both in their classrooms and here at our nature preserve. To these eager learners, it has come to represent one of the true wonders of nature.

In March of 2013, the Center received its very own Eastern Screech Owl which is no less wild, but partially impaired due to a retinal

detachment in its left eye. The resident raptors serve as educational tools for the biodiversity concept, which stresses the interconnected-

ness and importance of all species around us, both large and small.

The top-floor Osprey Room Observatory, with its magnificent views of the Elizabeth Islands and Buzzards Bay, has been designated by the

Massachusetts Executive Office of Environmental Affairs as one of the Commonwealth’s top-fifteen “Special Places”. Through telescopes

there, one can get a bird’s-eye view of formerly endangered Ospreys, and their fledging chicks, nesting on platforms erected by members

of the Center’s research staff. Trails are open from dawn to dusk, seven days a week.

Since its founding, the Lloyd Center has focused its research activities on assessing and documenting the distribution and ecology of the

natural resources of southeastern New England.

During 2013, Lloyd Center scientists conducted rare-species habitat assessments in Essex County, Martha’s Vineyard, and a number

of other nearby locations. The Center also gathered baseline data for its SouthCoast Biodiversity Initiative, documenting the biota of

southeastern Massachusetts. In collaboration with the Education staff, the Center’s butterfly garden was expanded and renovated as part

of the Biodiversity Initiative. The Center continued its collaboration with Martha’s Vineyard conservation agencies and produced rare-

habitat assessments for a growing number of private landowners.

In addition to its continuing work in protecting state-threatened species, including Diamondback Terrapins, on the Commonwealth’s

Division of Conservation and Recreation beaches in Bristol County, the Center completed its 28th year of monitoring and protecting

the federally-listed (“threatened”) Piping Plovers.

Research staff also participated in Bioblitzes in Rhode Island and New York, as well as the Rhode Island East Bay and the Massachusetts

Bristol County North American Butterfly Association’s 4th of July Butterfly Counts.

Collaborating with Tufts University, the Lloyd Center completed its 12th year as the Buzzards Bay coordinator of the Seabird Stranding

Network (SEANET), documenting instances of seabird mortality and live-bird activity on the western shoreline of Buzzards Bay.

E N V I R O N M E N T A L E D U C A T I O N

The Lloyd Center continues to provide an increasing number of unique hands-on science programs for schoolchildren and adolescents

in over 30 different New England cities and towns, at levels ranging from kindergarten through college.

This past year, the Lloyd Center worked with over 45 elementary and middle schools in the region, visiting a growing number of students

on a regular basis to teach interactive lessons on relevant and critically important environmental issues. Three of the curriculum-based

offerings, Feathery Focus (an ornithology program specially created for the third-grade level) and Turn-the-Tide (a program dealing with

the ecosystems of local estuaries, taught on the fifth-grade level), as well as the new Climate Science Learning Project have proven to be

especially effective. All education programs are designed to meet the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks in Science and Technology/

Engineering and in History/Social Studies.

For children ages 5-15, the Center’s Education Department annually provides up to 15 distinct summer programs designed to help students

develop a better understanding of science and a deeper appreciation for the need to protect the fragile nature of our coast. Every year, as

many as 13,000 students benefit from the participation in Lloyd Center education programs.

E N V I R O N M E N T A L O U T R E A C H

The Lloyd Center offers a wide variety of programs designed to engage the minds of southeastern New England citizens of all ages, expanding

their understanding of the fragile nature of our coastal environment and the importance of working together to protect it.

This past year over 300 people participated in popular programs, which included canoe tours, kayak trips, nature walks, shore-birding

expeditions, seal-watches, whale-watches, midnight “owl-prowls”, butterfly and moth identification workshops, as well as our annual Slocum

Challenge Regatta, designed to raise awareness of the threats facing the delicate ecosystems of local estuaries. Five-and-a-half miles of rustic

hiking trails, open to the public every day from dawn to dusk on the Lloyd Center’s Hardscrabble Nature Preserve, and a broad variety of

live marine animal exhibits, complemented by programs and seminars, continue to draw a growing number of citizens of all ages to our

Visitor Center.

In addition, outreach collaboration with partnering organizations continues to prove exceptionally effective in promoting lifestyle changes

aimed at a more sustainable use of natural resources. The Center’s unique website provides a vast amount of environmental research and

education information for those who seek it electronically.

THE ART DRIVEOn August 10 and 11, the ART drive returned to the South Coast for its 6th annual exhibit when 30 Dartmouth and Westport artists opened their studios to the public. The ART drive places a unique emphasis on a consistent and high level of professionalism and quality and features some of the area’s premier painters, ceramic artists, photographers, jewelers, and woodworkers Several of the open studios will also host guest artists from outside of the SouthCoast. “The ART drive is one of the region’s premier events for serious art lovers and collectors,” said Bev Carter, one of the Art Drive founders. The ART drive gives visitors the opportunity to interact with a diverse group of highly accom-plished artists while touring unique and dramatic private studios settings along a 15-mile route in historic ‘hidden gem’ communities along Massachusetts’ South Coast. ‘Classic Cod’ This year, participating artists created four-foot-long colorful depictions of the Cod, a fish with a rich historical and economic importance to the region. The cod were auctioned on eBay with proceeds going to the artists, artist donations to the Lloyd Center for the Environment, and the Art Drive.

DARTMOUTH, MA— The Lloyd Center for the Environment

has received a $35,000 grant from the Braitmayer Founda-

tion in support of the Center’s Climate Science Learning

Project (CSLP). Aligned with the Massachusetts curriculum

frameworks in science and engineering, the CSLP focuses

on the projected effects of climate change on local bio-

diversity, introducing age-appropriate math, writing, critical

thinking and life skills into core climate science lessons.

In its second year, the Climate Science Learning Project,

piloted during the school year, is a five-year effort to create

and implement curricula in public school science classes

that include hands-on mentoring in climate science research

for students from 3rd grade through high school. New

climate science curricula involves students collecting data

alongside Lloyd Center and visiting scientists in field obser-

vations of the biodiversity of the watersheds of the Slocum

and Westport rivers, merging it with existing data collected

by research staff and college interns from across the country

into a single, and easily accessible website database for

use by researchers at every educational level. Community

education opportunities are also made available to parents

and other local residents as part of the project, with all data

assembled forming a basis from which public officials can

create ecosystem management plans to prepare for the

impact of climate change on southeastern New England.

“We are grateful to the Braitmayer Foundation, CHT

Foundation, Dominion Foundation, Island Foundation,

Motorola Solutions Foundation, Rodgers Family Foundation,

and Adelard A. & Valeda Lea Roy Foundation for their

support. Thanks to these wonderful organizations, we will

be able to fully implement the climate science curricula

developed and tested system-wide during the school year

in local public schools.” stated Lloyd Center Executive

Director Rachel Stronach, “Standardization of the curricula

and full implementation in the coming year will again

provide up to 4,750 south-eastern New England elementary

and high-school-aged students with the opportunity to

work with professional scientists to collect data essential

to discovering and documenting the impact of climate

change on local wildlife. This work will also create a

replicable model for teaching climate science in school

systems throughout the region.”

Funding from these foundations will also support a second

annual Biodiversity week, the first of which involved 257

students from multiple schools in the region, led by instruc-

tors and researchers documenting species diversity in the

local watershed. Lloyd Center staff, interns, volunteers and

participating students documented over 500 species of

plants and animals, with similar results expected in the

coming year.

Climate Science Learning project activities are taking

place at selected sites in the watersheds of the Slocum

and Westport rivers, extending from the southeastern

Massachusetts bio-reserve in Fall River to the Lloyd Center

nature preserve in Dartmouth, and in public school class-

rooms from Fall River to Dartmouth. Related opportunities

will be provided for participants of all ages to inspire a

passion for science and understanding the relationship

between human communities and natural systems.
