Sermon Series

42 Days On Purpose

Do you know the answer to this question: ―If you are not growing, you are…‖? This month we begin the church-wide study, ―What On Earth Am I Here For‖? This is a question many of us would like to know the answer for ourselves. The campaign begins the weekend of February 25/26. There are many aspects to this campaign, including a sermon series aligned to the weekly topics, small group meetings to discuss the lessons, daily devotionals, the ability to get on line and learn even more about each devotional and much more!

Everyone participating will receive a book containing the daily devotionals, which will be handed out the weekends of February 18/19 and 25/26. A Kindle version of the daily devotional book is available on Amazon, if you prefer. There is also a weekly study

guide to help you learn even more from each lesson and to be used in your small group meetings. A $10 donation is requested to help cover the cost of these materials.

Small group meetings will have a HOST, a DVD to play and questions to discuss. See the article on page 2 in this newsletter. The first meetings for the small groups will be the week of February 26. We are looking for more HOST‘s!!

Why are we doing this study? In this year of rediscovery, we are helping you, our congregation, to Discover or Rediscover your purpose. Even if you have done Purpose Driven Life before, things have changed in the world, your life or your

family. And even if your life has not changed or you know your purpose, then come alongside of those who could use your help and experience! That‘s why we are using Rediscovery . . . and the book has changed in this new edition, as well.

Additionally, we want you to ask your friends, family, neighbors and coworkers to attend this with you. There are many in this world waiting to be asked to attend a campaign like this. Most of us are more afraid of asking than they are afraid to say ―yes‖. Have an impact on someone you know…ask them if they want to participate. We have booklets explaining the first week of the study and door hangers (pick up from the table in the Lobby) to spread and help you ask.

Finally, in the sanctuary we have a tree on the east wall. As each of us discovers our purpose, we will fill out the leaves and add them to the tree. If 500+ people learn their purpose in the different areas we will discuss, this would be a lot of leaves! Once we are done with this study, we will send a picture to Rick Warren and show him how our study helped identify your purpose!

If you have questions regarding ―42 Days On Purpose‖, please ask!! You can ask Pastor Jerry, Tony Schenk, Morgan K e l l u m , D e b Sedbrook, Kelly Vath or Pastor Paul.

Books will be available in the lobby on

the weekends of February

18 & 25.

Prayer On Purpose! Saturday, February 11

There has been so much positive feedback regarding opportunities to have all of the congregation meeting together. We will have another all-church gathering on Saturday February 11 for Prayer on Purpose. This will be an opportunity to walk and pray through the surrounding neighborhoods. And while we are doing this, we‘ll be hanging door hangers for the 42 Days on Purpose campaign. Plan to meet at the church at 3:30 pm for snacks and soft drinks. We will pray for our walk. We will pray for the Family in Christ community who shared their time and service for the walk, and pray for homes who receive the ―What On Earth Am I Here For‖ door hanger. Street assignments and door hangers will then be handed out to as many teams as we have!

We‘ll all return to the church by 4:45 and have a special prayer service from 5 to 6 pm (this Saturday, February 11 ONLY) led by the 42 Days on Purpose Prayer Team. There will be prayers for our congregation, the Pastor and Leaders in our church, the FIC community, and for the Lord to reveal to each of us our specific purpose. During this time, we‘ll share testimonies of the Neighborhood Walk and the prayers spoken. We will pray for what God can reveal to our community during the campaign journey. Come join the walk! Come join us in prayer! YOU are needed!!

Discussion and Small Groups We're in the final countdown to our "42 Days on Purpose" campaign! I hope that you are getting excited about the powerful connections and purpose-filled spiritual growth that has the potential of occurring during this 6-week study. One component that I believe is essential to getting the most out of this book is having an opportunity to dialogue with others about what you are learning, how you are challenged and the changes you want to see in your life. What does that "others" look like? At the very least, it's you and a friend connecting over coffee with the intent to dig a little deeper in the book. Or better yet, how about meeting once a week with a small group to discuss that week's theme and hear other‘s perspectives? Take a moment and consider who you might intentionally meet with over the course of the event. If you feel like a group would be a good fit for you, you can check out our current groups and select a time and place that fits your schedule.

Whether it's two of you meeting together or ten, I want to make certain that you have all the resources to make these six weeks life changing. There will be a HOST Training session on Wednesday, February 1 at 6:30 pm at FIC to hand out resources, answer questions and connect you with other HOSTS. Come a little earlier at 6 pm and have dinner. Please RSVP to [email protected] if you plan to attend so that we can have a head count for dinner.

If you have younger children, consider one of the Tuesday night options at Family in Christ. “Dive-In” is a great program for them while you meet with other adults. To make it easier, you can come at 6 and eat together as a family. For more information about dinner or to rsvp, please contact Margie ([email protected]). For more information regarding “Dive-In”, contact the Children’s Ministry team ([email protected]).

Morgan Kellum, Life Group Coordinator [email protected]

If you don't see a time or place that works, consider hosting a group. You can sign up to host online, or stop by the table in the lobby to sign up or ask questions.

Midweek Dinners

Beginning at 6 pm through 6:30, dinner is served on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. A suggested donation ($5 per adult, $2 for kids, $14 max per family, or please give what you can), helps to offset food expenses. Please note that parents need to supervise their children during dinner.

Tuesday meals and “Dive In” Children‘s program are scheduled to resume February 21 when the Marriage Prep Course starts. Dinner will also be available for those participating in any of the 42 Days on Purpose groups meeting at the church on Tuesday nights, beginning February 28.

Wednesday meals are available whether you are participating in any programs or not. If you need to get your kids or yourself to class by 6:30, it makes that process a whole lot easier, but is also an opportunity to simply enjoy fellowship and a night out of the kitchen!

If you just need some quiet time with God or someone to pray with you, stop by the Sanctuary on Tuesday evenings between 4 and 6 pm (new times) to pray. Come for 10 minutes; come for as long as you wish. This is not designed to be a formal service, just a quiet space to converse with God.

News from the Freys in Papua New Guinea

Brian and Susan Frey, our Wycliffe Bible Translators, will be coming back to the states from the Ukarumpa region for their furlough! They are looking for a rental from June 2017 through March 2018 that will accommodate their family of five. If you can help with accommodations please contact Judy Jorden ([email protected]).

Our annual quilt auction fundraiser will be February 11/12 and February 18/19. Four quilts will be part of a silent auction; the proceeds will be used to purchase batting, backing fabrics and

other supplies for this ministry. This is also a chance to see all the quilts we have worked on this past year. After the four quilts are auctioned off, the rest of the donation quilts will be divided between the following agencies: Family Tree (women in crisis), The Gathering Place (homeless shelter), Maple Star Colorado (specialized foster care), Children's Hospital (NICU baby quilts) and Growing Home (a ministry that helps homeless families transition into permanent housing). For more information, see the article on page 6.

Sunday Mornings This time is used to teach 6th-12th grade students how to read the Bible in a relevant way that helps them connect with God and each other.

9:00 am: 1 - 2 Thessalonians 10:30 am: Unique Looks into the Bible and Devotions and 42 Days on Purpose discussion.

Middle School: Scary, Gross, and Weird Stories from the Bible ―What about the unfamiliar characters? The unlikely accounts? Do you know just how offbeat and uncomfortable some parts of the Bible can be? How terrifying? How... dare we say it...weird?‖

High School: The Dare ―I DARE YOU! In this moment I challenge you to become something you have always wanted but only dreamed about.‖ And then continues to show readers how to do this in the power of God each week. We'll be going through step by step this amazingly practical, engaging and relevant book for High School students each week in our new fun space called "The Cabin".

42 Days on Purpose: Coinciding with FIC as a whole church, the youth will be participating in the 6-week journey through the renowned 42 Days on Purpose book. At the 10:30 service starting on February 26, both high school and middle school will split in discussion groups to discover more about their own purpose for being here on Earth. There will be videos, readings, discussion, and more. Don‘t miss out on a transformative six weeks.

Youth Group: Sundays - 4 to 6 pm

Connect with us! Each night this season includes a fun and creative game, a segment of worship and prayer, and either a relevant message or small group discussions. Plus the occasional free food! You won‘t want to miss the fun, so come and join us. February will include large group nights with our high school and middle school students, iron group nights, which is where we meet in small groups, and a super bowl party that you will not want to miss. We hope to see you there each week.

Who is ready for a fantastic February? There are many exciting things happening here at LIFT Ministries. We have our regular gatherings every Sunday from 4-6. These gatherings and opportunities for youth include: large group, Iron groups, Super Bowl party, mission trip meeting, and more. Please be aware of the mission trip meeting date (February 19, 6:00-7:30) if you are a part of the mission team. In addition, we will be holding an event February 24 & 25 called “30 Hour Famine.” This event is designed to raise awareness for world poverty and hunger. In partnership with youth groups around the entire country, LIFT Ministries will begin a 30-hour fast on the 24th at 12:00 pm, and it will finish after service on the 25th at 6:00 pm. Contact Wes, Carrie, or T.O.M. for more information on any of these events.

Get excited for our upcoming series for the next two months: BATTLE!

This new series incorporates many things about what our call of duty is to God,

what it looks like to be a soldier for Christ, how we train, battle, and respond to pain, and the how to deal with the battles and

circumstances life throws at us.

You won’t want to miss a single week.

The Cabin Express Have you seen our upgraded new room we call ―The Cabin?‖ If not, come check out the amazing work we did on the new reclaimed wood wall. The goal of The Cabin is to create a coffee shop-like atmosphere where students can gather to discuss life, God, and of course, have fun. In addition, we are now selling drinks and snacks at both the morning services and Youth Group on Sundays. Bring some money; all of the proceeds go to funding our Compassion Child in Ghana, Augustina. There is a billboard devoted to her in The Cabin. Please take the time to see what God is doing in her life and be a part in changing it.

This photo is from our 30-hour famine two years ago. You don‘t want to miss this wonderful opportunity to grow closer as a community and help those in need around the world.

Little Lambs Nursery Ministry infants & toddlers / 0 — 4 years

Available at all worship services, our little ones will grow in faith through an interactive program that includes Bible stories, singing praise, play, and prayer.

The Nursery can always use more volunteers during all services. Help nurture our littlest members and give their parents a chance to be filled with meaningful and undistracted worship, without their kiddos.

Please contact Angela to volunteer. Angela Schenk, Director ([email protected])

Sundays 10:30 am

Join us for our Deep Blue curriculum. Children will get to know Christ and the Bible through fun games, crafts and group learning activities. Classroom ages are:

Pre-school — 3 and 4 year olds Age 5 and Kindergarteners

1st and 2nd graders 3rd, 4th and 5th graders

Sundays 9:00 am Instead of a more traditional Sunday school class, W.O.W. teaches Bible messages in a new and action-driven way in a group setting. This is a great option to keep your kids engaged if you attend worship and/or an adult class during both hours. Instead of children doing the same Sunday school class twice at 9 and 10:30, they will get two completely different lessons and settings! This gives you, the parents, an opportunity to worship at 9 and participate in M.O.R.E at 10:30! WIN!!

If you have questions or wish to volunteer, please visit our Children‘s Information Desk or email us at [email protected].

Wednesday Night Programs 6:30 - 8:15 pm

(Dinner available starting at 6:00 - see article on page 3 for details)

Boys (Cadets) and girls (GEMS) 1st through 5th grade will have the chance to earn badges, participate in community outreach, partake in Wednesday Night Programs off-site and grow in their faith through music, games, crafts and projects. Children's Communion

Class This annual class begins February 5 and continue all four Sundays in February during the 10:30 service. During these 4 weeks, children will have hands-on experiences in understanding the b i b l i c a l b a c k g r oun d f o r communion and why it ' s important still. Children will make their own grape juice, have a Seder meal and participate in many more related activities. Children in grades 2 to 6 are welcome to attend. Potluck and Game Night Friday, March 3,

beginning at 6:00 pm

One way to ―get closer‖ in 2017 is to spend fellowship time together. Game Nights are a great opportunity to do just that. After a potluck dinner, it's a time to play your favorite board or card games (bring them) or learn some new ones. Our resident gaming expert, Dave Jones, and fellow gamers teach them and/or play them with us. There are games for all ages, including grade school kids. Childcare for the younger kids can be provided, if requested by February 28. Please email Angela at [email protected].

We start with a potluck at 6 pm; the games start around 7 pm. It's the perfect fellowship event to invite that spouse, neighbor, or coworker to visit our church in a less threatening environment first. This can be both your IN and your OUT moment! Please join us for this always fun time and get to know others at Family in Christ.

Parents of Teens (from our Student Ministries Leaders) Parents, thank you for all you do in your child‘s life. You play a vital role in developing them into the beautiful child of God He has created them to be. Throughout this month, we have many prayer requests we could use your support in. As we move forward in 2017, pray that the Gospel of Christ reaches anybody and everybody that comes to our group or is known by a member of our group. Pray for our mission team as we begin to put all of the details together for our trip and auction. Finally, pray lives here and around the world are transformed through our 30-hour fast we are doing at the end of the month.

If you are interested in connecting with other youth parents, please contact Brett or Morgan Kellum. More information can be found on the youth counter at the East wing of the church.

Book Club News The Book Club will meet Monday, February 20 at 7:00 pm at the home of Sheila Shea (303-465-3634) to discuss the book " H is for Hawk" by Helen Macdonald. All are welcome.

February 16: Favorite Things Each mama will bring something that she just cannot live without. She will be sharing this item and its importance to her with the group, then passing it along to another mama to enjoy and use!

Page 8: Living Your Calling: What On Earth Am I Here For? · Brian and Susan Frey, our Wycliffe Bible Translators, will be coming back to the states from the Ukarumpa region for their furlough!

Our MISSION as a Family in Christ: With Prayer and God‘s Spirit as our source of power, we will work toward turning the unchurched into attenders, attenders into members, members into disciples, disciples into ministers, and ministers into reproducers. All to the glory of God.

Our VISION as a Family in Christ is to build a Christian community

where others can come to SEE Christ . . . KNOW Christ . . .

GROW in Christ . . . SERVE Christ . . . SHARE Christ . . .

so that we might fully become a Family in Christ.

DEACONS

The Council of Family in Christ consists of lay people elected to serve as Elders or Deacons for a 3-year term. Along with Pastor Paul, the Council works together for the w e l f a r e o f t h e congregation and to foster community outreach.

The role of Elder is one of shepherding the flock and encouraging them to understand their calling to care for and support one another.

The role of Deacon is servant-oriented, to offer mercy, and oversee the benevolence ministry.

Photos to help put a face with a name of each Council member are available by the coat racks at the west end of the church.
