In the Spirit of Martin de Porres and Rose of Lima

Organized around the four pillars of Dominican life, the weekend will feature

time for prayer and community along with a program that will delve deeply

into both the ministerial and intellectual traditions of the Order. The theme

of the conference centers on the collaborative partnership of the patron of our Province,

St. Martin de Porres and the first saint canonized in the Americas, St. Rose of Lima.

As spiritual companions and ministerial partners dedicated to providing health care to

Lima’s poorest outcasts, their love of God leading to love for the poor provides a model

for living the preferential option for the poor worthy of emulating.

Date and Location The conference will be held on October 21- 23, 2016 in Dallas, Texas at the DFW Airport Marriott Hotel. We have secured an excellent room rate of $119.00 per night and the hotel provides transportation to and fromthe airport.

Opening Session and Keynote PresentationOn Friday evening, our opening keynote presentation is being co-sponsored by the University of Dallas Ann and Joe O. Neuhoff School of Ministry and will feature three extraordinary individuals; Fr. Bruno Cadoré,OP, Master of the Order of Preachers, Fr. Gustavo Gutiérrez, OP, noted theologian who is widely known as the“father of liberation theology,” and Dr. Paul Farmer, the internationally recognized humanitarian physician andco-founder of Partners In Health. The program will be moderated by Sr. Barbara Reid, OP, Dean at theCatholic Theological Union. The conversation will be based on the best-selling book In the Company of the Poor,which was co-authored by Dr. Farmer and Fr. Gustavo with a preface by Fr. Bruno and all conference attendeeswill be given a copy of the book. This keynote presentation will be open to the wider Dallas community.

Saturday PresentationsDuring the day on Saturday, Dominican friars, sisters and laity will offer presentations that will explore the livesof St. Martin de Porres and St. Rose of Lima from a variety of theological and spiritual perspectives includingScripture, preaching, spiritual companionship and social justice. These presentations are intended to engage the participants both intellectually and affectively and deepen their understanding of the ways in which the Dominican charism shaped the lives and actions of St. Martin and St. Rose, and how this relates to our ownlives as Dominicans.

Prayer and CommunityMorning prayer, evening prayer and Mass will be celebrated during the conference in a dedicated worship spaceand we are looking forward to some wonderful Dominican preaching and fantastic music. Meal times will bearranged to provide space and time for conversation and sharing. On Saturday evening, there will be a specialdinner and program to celebrate our 800th Anniversary. The conference will close with a Sending Forth blessingby the Master of the Order.

Bruno Cadoré, OPMaster of the Order of PreachersFr. Bruno Cadoré was born in France and trained as amedical doctor prior to entering the Dominicans in1979. After his first profession in 1980, he spent twoyears in Haiti before beginning his Dominican studies.He was ordained a priest in 1986 and served as Master of Students for seven years. In 1992, he received his doctorate in moral theology with a specialization in the field of bio-ethics. He was a professor of biomedical ethics at the Catholic University ofLille while directing the Centre for Medical Ethics. He also served on the NationalAids Council of France from 2008 to 2010. Prior to being elected as the Master of the Order, he served as Prior Provincial

of the Province of France from 2002 to 2010. Fr. Bruno travels the world meetingwith all branches of the Order – friars, nuns, sisters and laity – building the unity of the Order, learning about the work and ministries of the Order, and remindingthe world-wide Dominican community that the holy preaching must give priority to the poor.

Gustavo Gutiérrez, OP Fr. Gustavo is a Peruvian theologian and member of theOrder of Preachers. He has dedicated his life to eliminating poverty and injustice through service andscholarship. He is most well-known for his foundationalwork in Latin American liberation theology. He is the author of numerous books including A Theology of Liberation: History, Politics, Salvation, We Drink FromOur Own Wells: The Spiritual Journey of A People, On Job: God-Talk and the Suffering of the Innocent, and Las Casas: In Search of the Poor of Jesus Christ.Fr. Gustavo holds a B.S. in Medicine from the National University in Lima, Peru,and the S.T.L. and Ph.D. from Universite Catholique de Lyon. He has been a principal professor at the Pontifical University of Peru, and has been a visiting professor at many major universities in North America and Europe. He is currentlythe John Cardinal O’Hara Professor of Theology at the University of Notre Dameand divides his time between his scholarly work and teaching at Notre Dame andhis service to the poor at his parish in Lima, Peru.

Paul Farmer, MD, Ph.D. Medical anthropologist and physician Paul Farmer has dedicated his life to improving health care for the world'spoorest people. He is the co-founder of internationally recognized non-profit organization, Partners In Health (PIH),whose mission is to provide a preferential option for thepoor in health care in resource-poor settings around the world. Dr. Farmer holds an M.D. and Ph.D. from Harvard

University, where he is the Kolokotrones University Professor and the Chair of theDepartment of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School; he is also Chief of the Division of Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston. Dr. Farmer serves as the United Nations Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Community Based Medicine and Lessons from Haiti.Dr. Farmer has written extensively on health, human rights, and the consquences

of social inequality. His numerous books include Reimagining Global Health: An Introduction, Haiti After the Earthquake, Pathologies of Power: Health, HumanRights, and the New War on the Poor and The Uses of Haiti, Infections and Inequalities: The Modern Plagues, and AIDS and Accusation.

speakersCharles Latour, OP is a Dominican friar of theProvince of Saint Martin de Porres. Originally fromMiami, Florida, Fr. Charle’s educational backgroundincludes a BA in Child Development from PurdueUniversity, a Juris Doctor from Boston College, aMaster of Theology and Master of Divinity fromAquinas Institute of Theology, and he is currentlycompleting a Master of Education from the University of Dayton. He entered the Order of Preachers in 1996 and was ordained in 2001.Fr. Charles has been in secondary and higher education for over twenty-five years

in a variety of roles including teacher, coach, dean of students and administrator atcolleges and preparatory schools throughout the East coast. He is currently servingas Principal at Archbishop Hannan High School in Covington, Louisiana.

Brian J. Pierce, OP is a Dominican friar of theProvince of St. Martin de Porres, and an itinerantpreacher based in Texas. During the 1990’s, Fr. Brian was a member of a team of Dominican friars sent to found a new community of preachersin Honduras. He has lived in the “Forest of Peace”contemplative ashram in Oklahoma, where he beganto delve more deeply into Christian mysticism andinterreligious dialogue. Fr. Brian lived in Peru for three years ministering to theDominican Family throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, followed by sixyears based in Rome accompanying the Dominican Contemplative Nuns worldwide.He is the author of Martin de Porres: A Saint of the Americas, We Walk the PathTogether: Learning from Thich Nhat Hanh and Meister Eckhart, and Jesus and theProdigal Son.

Jude Siciliano, OP is friar of the Province of St. Martin de Porres and Prior of the Dominican community and Novitiate in Irving, Texas. Widely recognized as a Master Preacher, Fr. Jude is the past president of the Catholic Association ofTeachers of Homiletics and taught homiletics at theGraduate Theological Union in Berkeley. In 1981, hefounded the Preachers’ Exchange to offer a resource for those interested inpreaching and preparing for the Sunday liturgy. Deeply committed to social justice,Fr. Jude was a volunteer chaplain at California's San Quentin Prison. Fr. Jude is apopular itinerant preacher traveling throughout the United States giving preachingworkshops to ordained and lay preachers, and offering parish retreats for priests,religious, deacons, and laity.

Walter Wagner, OP is a Dominican friar in theProvince of St. Joseph. He entered the Order ofPreachers in August 1987 having been captivated bythe Order’s charism of “holy preaching” when hewas an undergraduate at Yale University. After being ordained to the priesthood in 1993, Fr. Walter servedthe Saint Joseph Province of the Order as Professorof Theology at Providence College, and Master of Novices for ten years. He is theauthor of Dominican Life: A Commentary on the Rule of St. Augustine, and frequentlylectures on Dominican spirituality and community life. He currently resides in NewYork City where he serves as the pastor of the churches of Saint Vincent Ferrerand St. Catherine of Siena, and as Prior of the St. Catherine of Siena community.

Barbara E. Reid, OP is a Dominican Sister of GrandRapids, Michigan. She holds a Ph.D. in Biblical Studiesfrom The Catholic University of America in Washington,D.C., M.A. in Religious Studies and B.A. from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, MI. She is Vice President andAcademic Dean and Professor of New Testament Studiesat Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. Her most recentbooks are Abiding Word: Sunday Reflections, Taking Upthe Cross: New Testament Interpretations Through Latina and Feminist Eyes,(2009), The Gospel According to Matthew. Parables for Preachers, Choosing theBetter Part? Women in the Gospel of Luke. Forthcoming in 2016 is Wisdom’sFeast: An Introduction to Feminist Interpretation of the Scriptures. She is General Editor for a new 58-volume feminist commentary on the Bible, WisdomCommentary Series, of which the first three volumes appeared in November 2015.She is immediate past President of the Catholic Biblical Association of America.

Leobardo (Leo) Almazán, OP is a Dominican friar of the Province of St. Martin de Porres. He earned the STL in Moral theology (2011) and the STD in Social Ethics (2015) at the AlphonsianAcademy in Rome and is currently profess of moraltheology and the Montesinos Fellow at the AquinasInstitute of Theology in St. Louis. He is a member ofDominicans for Justice and Peace, the permanentdelegation to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, and he currently resides at the Dominican House of Studies in St. Louis where he serves as Prior.

Jennie Weiss Block, OP is a practical theologian, a Dominican laywoman and member of the Provinceof St. Martin de Porres. She currently serves as chief advisor to Dr. Paul Farmer, and was his chief of staff in his role as United Nations Deputy SpecialEnvoy under President Bill Clinton. Dr. Block has aMBA, an M.A. in Theology, and a Doctorate of Ministry from Barry University. She is the author of Copious Hosting: A Theology of Access for People with Disabilities widely considered a seminal text in the development of a theology of disability. She is theco-editor of In the Company of the Poor: Conversations with Dr. Paul Farmer andFr. Gustavo Gutierrez.

Catherine Hilkert, OP, a member of the Dominican Sisters of Peace, is Professor of Theology at the Universityof Notre Dame where she has been on the faculty since1995. She is the author numerous books including Naming Grace: Preaching and the Sacramental Imagination, Speaking with Authority: Catherine of Sienaand the Voices of Women Today, The Praxis of the Reignof God. Sr. Catherine has preached and lectured inCanada, the Netherlands, Ireland, Australia, and South Africa as well as the United States and she served on the International Preaching Commission of theDominican Order from 2006-2009. Currently, she is working on a book titledWords of Spirit and Life: Theology, Preaching and Spirituality.
