ThearchaeologistsandeducatorsoftheLivingArchaeologySteeringCommitteehavedesignedthisdaylongworkshoptohelpfirsttimersandseasonedparticipantsmakethemostoftheir2012LivingArchaeologyWeekend(LAW)experience.
TeacherswhoattendwillreceivepriorityschedulingfortheirclassesatLAW2012.
ArrangementsarebeingmadeforPDcredit.ParticipantswillreceiveaCDwithallLAWeducationalmaterials.MiguelâsPizzawillprovidelunch.
Duringthisworkshop,participantswilllearnaboutthehistoryandprehistoryoftheRedRiverGorgeandengageinhands-onlearningbydoingselectedlessonsdevelopedespeciallyforLAW.AseasonedveteranLAWteacherwillsharehowhehasmadeLAWâsoutdoorlearningexperienceapartofhisclasscurriculum.Previous
attendeeswilloffertheirideasforimprovingthelearningopportunitiesLAWprovides.TimealsowillbesetasideforQ&Aaboutthe2012demonstratorsandsitelogistics.
Afterattendingthisworkshop,participantswill1.understandLAWâseducationalmissionandgoals;2.usetheresourcesintheLAWteacherresourcepacketandthedemonstrationsattheeventtosupportKentuckyCoreContentintheirclassroom;and3.planhowtobestoperationalizetheon-sitelearningexperiencefortheirstudents.
ParticipantsareencouragedtobringanylessonstheyhavedevelopedfortheirLAWvisittosharewiththeotherworkshopparticipants.Ifanyonehasartifacts
theyuseintheclassroomthatareinneedofidentification,weencourageyoutobringthem,too.
Workshopattendanceislimitedto20teachers.Theworkshopcosts$55.00perperson,butthroughthesupportofourgeneroussponsors,theworkshopfeehasbeenwaivedforthefirst10peoplewhosignup.ContactTressaBrownbyJune15,[email protected].

LivingArchaeologyWeekendprogramswillpromoteinthepublicanappreciationforculturaldiversityandculturalaccomplishments,focusingontherichAmericanIndianheritageofKentuckyspanning11,500yearsandcontinuingtothepresent,aswellasthelifewaysofhistoricperiodsettlersinKentucky.
LivingArchaeologyWeekendprogramswillinformthepublicaboutthepastasitisknownthrougharchaeology,includingbutnotlimitedtoarchaeologicalsitetypesinKentucky,theculturehistoryofKentucky,andreconstructionoftraditionalAmericanIndianandpioneerlifeways(technology,subsistence,settlement,healingpractices,artisticexpression,andbeliefsystems)inKentucky
LivingArchaeologyWeekendprogramswillfosterinthepublicrespectforculturalresourcesandpromotepublicstewardshipofthearchaeologicalrecord.
LivingArchaeologyWeekendEducationalGoals
NativepeopleswholivedintheRedRiverGorgehadneedssimilartoours:food,
clothing,andshelter,aswellasfamilies,government,trade,art,andbeliefs.Theyaccomplishedgreatthings!
Historicperiodsettlersusednewbutparalleltechnologiestoaddresssimilarneeds,astheydevelopedfarms,industries,andcommunitiesintheRedRiverGorge.
WeallhavearesponsibilitytopreservetheplacesintheRedRiverGorgewherethesepastpeopleleftbehindthetracesoftheirwaysoflife.
