Welcome to Our New Administrative Assistant/Bookkeepr!

We’re so very pleased to add Nicole Knowles to our Senior Center sta! Nicole was previously employed by Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI AHQ), where she worked in various nance and administrative positions for een years. Nicole comes to us with a wealth of knowledge and a genuine desire to help the Center operate as smoothly as possible.

Nicole moved to Seattle 21 years ago from Wyoming, where her favorite aunt still resides. Her passion and commitment to seniors was inspired by this aunt, aectionately known as Auntie Fancy, who Nicole talks to on the phone every day. Nicole is frequently inspired by Auntie Fancy’s wisdom and kindness. When not at work, Nicole enjoys traveling the world, studying business, and attending the theater with her husband and daughter as oen as she can!

treasures she procures in her hunts. If you’d like to see these treasures, you can visit her online shop on Etsy called e-FeatheredCurator or her eBay store called MoxieMugs.

When asked her how volunteering at the Center has impacted her life, she replied “It makes me feel better; it’s enriching. It has made me less self-cen-tered. I tout the Senior Center everywhere I go and I tell people how wonderful it is here!” She says she loves to see the joy in people’s eyes when they see the decora-tions she creates – it makes it all worthwhile!

Well, we all tout Bianca’s willingness to share so much of her time and her many creative talents, as well as her boundless energy and enthusiasm with our Center! We are so grateful for her ongoing dedication to our Center, to our community, and to creating such beautiful and festive atmospheres for events here. e fruits of her hard work are enjoyed by so many, over and over again.

Volunteer Extraordinare - Bianca Thomka Back in 2016, Bianca omka saw an ad for volunteers in the West Seattle Blog and felt that it was a good time to give back to her community, so she responded. Ever since then, she’s been volunteering in a variety of important roles at the Senior Center. She’s assisted our Social Workers with all of the data entry they are required to do, but don’t always have the time for. She’s been an integral member of our kitchen crew, helping to provide a home-cooked meal to those who join us for lunch during the week. She’s even stepped up to take the lead with this crew when the chef has been out sick or on vacation. Bianca’s been so incredibly valued in these roles, it’s hard to believe she found a way to be an even more extraordinary volunteer with her contributions to our monthly Rainbow Bingo fundraiser.

If you’ve ever rounded the corner into Hatten Hall before one of these monthly Rainbow Bingo events and found your jaw drop in awe when catching sight of the amazing decorations, Bianca is oen the person behind them. Bianca will nd out the theme of that month’s event and then research decorating options and possibilities online. Once the decorations are decided upon, Bianca will either make them herself or buy them and donate them to the Center.

Making them has included blowing up hundreds of balloons to create columns and to hang from the ceiling, gluing hundreds of colored strips of paper together (in correct rainbow order!) to create looped chains to form a radiating ceiling decoration, cutting out numerous Super Heroes logos on construction paper to hang from the ceiling or to ax to the walls, fashioning an adorable likeness of Cousin Itt to greet at-tendees at the entrance to the Hall, and so many more. She’s even built a frame to hold a backdrop customized to each of these events!

A little bit about Bianca…She was living in Los Angeles when she decided to relocate to Seattle in order to follow her best friend who had moved to the area earli-er. Soon aer coming to Seattle, she met her future hus-band at the old Ozzie’s bar on Queen Anne He actually proposed to her on the rooop of the infamous karaoke bar! e two of them, along with their dog Dolly, now live in West Seattle where Bianca works part-time for the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce.

Bianca’s passion is in buying items and reselling them on her Etsy shop and her eBay store. Her online stores specialize in vintage items, coee mugs, and unique

important dierence between a monitored system and an unmonitored system is cost. e monitored system adds a monthly fee in addition to the purchase price.

e third question you should ask is, should you add a fall-detection feature? Some companies oer this for an additional monthly fee. ese devices sense when a fall occurs and automatically contact the dispatch center. However, this feature may not work perfectly. It may sometimes detect a fall when there isn’t one, or less likely, it may not detect an actual fall.

When you’ve decided what kind of system you want and actually begin to look at the systems that are available, there are a number of additional questions to ask. What is the monthly cost for the type of system you’ve chosen? Is there a contract, and if so, for how long? Is there a cancellation fee? What is the return policy? Is there an activation fee? What are the non-emergency customer service hours? How long does the battery for the in-home call button last? How long does the mobile unit battery last?

Once you’ve made your decision and had your system installed, you can feel assured that in case of a medical emergency you’ve done everything possible to ensure that professional assistance will arrive quickly to assist you.

If you live alone, you have probably worried what would happen to you if you fall or have a medical emergency and you’re either not near your phone or you are unable to use it. A medical alert device that you wear on your wrist or around your neck can literally be a lifesaver in a medical emergency. ese buttons don’t prevent emergencies, of course, but you may feel reassured that if you have an emergency, you simply press a call button and you are put in touch with a dispatcher who can summon emergency help or call a friend or family member of your choice.

ere are so many options for choosing a medic alert system that it’s a good idea to take plenty of time to choose the system that’s right for you and your particular needs. ere are a few important questions to ask yourself when you begin to shop for a medical alert system.

First, do you want a home-based or mobile system? Originally, medical alert systems were designed to work inside the home with a landline. Your system can still be set up to work with your landline. However, many companies now oer a home-based system that works with a cellular network, since many people no longer have a landline. If you don’t leave your home very oen, a home-based system could be a good op-tion for you. However, a mobile system allows you to use your system at home or when you are away from home and have a fall or other medical emergency.

e second question you should ask is, should your system be monitored or not? A monitored system connects to a 24/7 line staed by trained dispatchers. An unmonitored system allows you to contact friends or family on a programmed emergency call list. An
