Livestream group session

New parents have faced isolation without parenting groups and returned to workplaces that now consist of their kitchen table. Primary school parents have abruptly had to deal with homeschooling, classroom bubbles and tough conversations with kids. Parents of teens have had the exam fiasco, and now, to top it all off, a last minute storm about mask wearing at school and rota systems. The bad news is the year ahead doesn’t look any more certain, with the possibility of regional lockdowns and outbreaks.

BUT here’s the good news - Parent Scheme is running a series of FREE livestreams to support working parents as they kickstart the new academic year. We will put common questions and concerns to our team of experts to help parents get the answers they need. Expect honesty, humour and relatable advice combined with practical takeaways to help working parents make the right decisions for their families and their careers.

Livestreams:

What it means to be a dual career couple has changed dramatically in 2020. None of us expected to juggle two jobs, kids and a pandemic - all from home. It’s no surprise that shouting and friction (*fights) are more common than we would like. Couples are overwhelmed with guilt and exhaustion. On top of that, everyone is freaking out that they’re not doing enough at work - or being present enough for their kids.

Our career coach and HR expert Helen Lamb will get the unvarnished reality from Lindsay Chadwick, founder of Parent Scheme, on how she survived (or not) as a dual career couple with three kids under 10 and a husband working in intensive care. They’ll be talking about what happened in Lindsay’s house, as well as themes and observations gathered through Parent Scheme’s work during the pandemic, what ‘normal’ looks like and practical strategies for handling the year of uncertainty ahead. Anxiety, burnout, feeling low and being overwhelmed have been common working parent experiences in 2020. Many parents are struggling with the constant change of the pandemic, the responsibility of raising young and precious humans alongside work and financial uncertainty. Kids and teens need support too, as their whole worlds have been upended.

This session is led by the very brilliant Dr John Mcgrath, a GP in Islington with a decade of experience in a number of different settings, including GP surgeries, A&E and urgent care teams. Originally from Belfast, he trained in Oxford, before moving to London in 2010. He’ll bring stark honesty about the challenges he faced living through the pandemic with a toddler and a newborn, while also holding leadership positions in responding to the coronavirus pandemic. He’ll share common struggles he observes in his practice and his insights on how we can help ourselves - and when getting more help might be the right way forward. Teens have faced huge disruption on every front in 2020, cancelled exams and leavers’ balls, social separation, learning from home, disrupted holidays and now the introduction of masks. Some have thrived away from school and are now worried about going back, while others are desperate to return but have tons of questions. Parents are anxious about their teens’ wellbeing, how they adjust to the academic year ahead and what further disruption might mean going forward.

Dr Penny Utton is a chartered psychologist (BSc (Hons), CPsychol., DPsych., AFBPsS) with over a decade of experience in supporting teenagers. She runs an independent practice and also teaches courses on child and adolescent wellbeing, including depression and anxiety disorders. She has served as NHS clinical lead for young people’s services and has worked within CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service) and IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies). Children and teens have faced unprecedented amounts of change in the last eight months. As a parent it can be hard to know how to have conversations and give support when there is so much uncertainty ahead. What do great conversations even look like? What should you do if you get it wrong? What should you say if they ask about the future or if they are hating being back at school?

Lucinda Powell is a chartered psychologist, a qualified teacher and she also holds an additional Masters degree in special educational needs together with qualifications in young people’s mental health. She has developed programmes for ThinkWell which are designed to help children and teenagers engage positively with change and also sits on several steering committees for the Departments of Experimental Psychology and Psychiatry at Oxford University. Her private practice work includes helping families manage exam anxiety and performance and support for parenting children with autism, attention deficit hyperactivity and dyslexia. Managing your career alongside being a loving and involved parent will always throw up big questions - and now a pandemic has been hurled into the mix. Should you take the promotion and continue with rapid career progression, or is it better to play it safe in a role that is less at risk of the macroeconomic uncertainty? Or perhaps you know you need to regain confidence after time away from work before taking the next step. Lindsay Chadwick is grilling Helen Lamb about how we make the right choices when there is no obvious answer. Helen loves providing honest and commercially realistic support to busy working parents, whilst also helping them manage this career stage in accordance with their own preferences and priorities. Her career in HR has been in blue-chip financial service companies, fast-paced technology companies and SMEs. During the pandemic she’s helping working parents manage change, keep their careers on track and stay sane. She studied Economics and Management at Cambridge University and is a Chartered member of the CIPD. Book here - Parent Scheme bookings portal

Few people hope for parental leave to start during a pandemic. Not being able to share postnatal appointments with your partner or a friend, or go to baby groups, and knowing you’ll be returning to work at home, is not how anyone expects it to be. Nursery places have been harder to come by and nannies are still technically meant to social distance from parents. Dr Charlotte Frise is a Consultant Physician in General (Internal) Medicine and Obstetric Medicine based at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. She has three young children and runs a returnship programme for parental leave takers at several NHS trusts. She’ll be answering questions on being pregnant during a pandemic, common worries and concerns she sees and what she wishes every parental leave taker knew about returning to work.

More info on Charlie: She also works as a Consultant Obstetric Physician at Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospital in London. She undertook her pre-clinical training at Emmanuel College, University of Cambridge, where she achieved First class honours and then moved to the University of Oxford for her clinical training. She remained in Oxford as a junior doctor and completed her training in General (Internal) Medicine. She developed a specialist interest in Obstetric Medicine, completing additional training at Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospital. She has three children under the age of 9 and is passionate about helping parents combine work and parenting in the way that works for their family. Book here - Parent Scheme bookings portal
