CONSTRUCTIONUPDATE

Welcome to Peel Ports Liverpool2 News. The purpose of this newsletter is to keep you updated on the exciting development of Liverpool2, the UK’s new deep-water container terminal. We will regularly share with you the construction progress, key milestones, business activity and other news.

INTRODUCTIONLiverpool2 is Peel Ports’ new deep water container terminal. When it opens for business at the end of 2015 it will be the UK’s most centrally located deep water container terminal. It will offer shipping lines a unique opportunity to bring larger vessels closer to the UK’s industrial, manufacturing and consumer heartland than any other UK port.

Capable of handling the largest container vessels afloat today, with a berth length of more than 850m and a berth pocket of 16.5m, Liverpool2 creates the capacity to handle the next generation of container ships and empowers the Port of Liverpool to be the UK’s national gateway and transhipment hub for Ireland. The development will reaffirm Liverpool as the UK’s leading transatlantic port, whilst enabling direct market connections to the Americas, India, Far East, Caribbean, Mediterranean and the Baltics.

Peel Ports Liverpool’s container terminals have undergone their latest phase of new infrastructure development, with the installation of a £9.7 million information system investment platform.

The Navis N4 Terminal Operating System and AutoGate are now live and fully operational and will deliver faster turnaround times through a streamlined process from landside or quayside entry to exit.

The fully automated AutoGate system uses state-of-the-art identification technologies to manage gate operations, ensuring that all containers and trucks are automatically identified before entering or exiting the terminal.

Advanced optical character recognition and line-scan camera technology (automatically detecting seal presence) link with gate operating software that seamlessly integrates to Peel Port’s existing terminal operating software, Navis N4, and Customer Access Portal. The security process is further completed using biometric fingerprint identification to further validate driver/load identification and enhance security.

Caroline Clark, Business and Automation Process Manager was the Project Manager for the delivery of AutoGates from inital concept through to completion. “The introduction of AutoGate and the new Navis N4 TOS is a very important step for us in making a difference to our customers, enhancing their experience using the port. We took the bold move to combine both initiatives into a single project to minimise any disruption to normal operations for our customers and to provide the overall benefits

PORT OF LIVERPOOL IMPLEMENTS

AHEAD OF LIVERPOOL2 OPENING sooner. Although this decision came with added risks, we have managed to deliver this significant upgrade to our capabilities, thanks to the planning and hard work of the whole team over many months.

Haulier transactions are now fully integrated into the N4 system, which means more secure and efficient visits and minimal turnaround times at our terminals. This process will also mean that paperwork and leaving the vehicle is minimised unnecessary, thus increasing security, improving safety, reducing risks and saving time spent completing manual checks.”

“Our automated solutions drive greater efficiencies, resulting in lower overall operational costs, improved safety and better equipment availability. Process automation solutions are designed to optimise the information flows within the terminal’s business processes to ensure the most efficient equipment utilisation.”

Tommi Pettersson, VP Automation | Kalmar

“Landside collaboration is the single biggest remaining opportunity to reduce inefficiency and Peel Ports is tackling this head-on with the implementation of new technologies and processes that will help to move the hauliers through the terminal more rapidly.”

CRANE OPERATIONS AT PORT OF LIVERPOOL

In anticipation of the arrival of Liverpool2’s ship-to-shore cranes, Peel Ports has invested £500K to introduce a state-of-the-art ‘virtual’ training simulator; designed to ensure all operators are ready to manoeuvre the giant structures from day one of their installation.

Peel Ports has been working closely with ABB, a global leader in automation, to produce a customised, high-tech training simulator tailored to interactively test the abilities and skills of drivers by presenting them with realistic, operating scenarios.

The crane simulator reproduces the equipment layouts and behavioural movements of the actual ship-to-shore (STS) and semi-automated cantilever rail mounted gantry cranes (CRMG) which have been manufactured by Zhenhua Port Machinery Company (ZPMC) and are the tallest cranes built by the Chinese manufacturer to date.

The custom-designed software package on the simulator incorporates highly visual, real-life landscape graphics depicting the Liverpool skyline, including the iconic Liver Building and the River Mersey.

CARGO200

CARGO200

Peel Ports Group launched a major carbon initiative at this years Multimodal; Cargo 200. Calling on the UK freight and logistics industry to rethink supply chain and service routes in order to reduce freight journeys by 200 million miles over the next five years.

The company aims to recruit up to 200 cargo owners, importers and exporters to support the campaign, cutting the cost of inland transportation by switching current delivery of ocean freight from south-east ports to the centrally located Port of Liverpool, if their goods start or end their journey in the north of the UK, this would provide savings of up to £400 per container.

Peel Ports’ Group Commercial Director, Patrick Walters said: “This initiative is about efficiency and sustainability. We have looked at the geographical demand for goods in the UK, comparing the point of entry of those goods into the country with the end destination and calculating the carbon emissions and potential savings.

“The reality is that over 50% of demand for all UK cargo comes from the northern half of the UK, including Scotland and Ireland - not really surprising as 35 million people, including many in Ireland, live within 240km (150 miles) of Liverpool.

“From our modelling, based on the journeys currently undertaken by these cargoes, it has been possible to project that at least 200 million road miles could be saved over the next five years. We are calling on cargo owners and operators to ‘act green’ and support this very important initiative.”

The initiative has already attracted support from over 25 organisations including B&M, Matalan, Meyer Timber and Typhoo.

THE GLOBAL

Page 13: Liverpool2 Issue 4

THE GLOBAL TEAM

1. What is your background?

I have spent my entire working career in the logistics sector, starting in freight forwarding before moving to the liner industry 20 years ago.

From a shipping line perspective I have worked for some of the world’s largest organisations; ACL, Yang Ming and most recently CSAV where I was the Commercial Director for 12 years. In that role I was responsible for the management (with the UK sales team) of key accounts, customer retention and acquisition for major trade routes, specifically South America, India, Middle East, Transatlantic and the Far East.

2. What is your new role at Peel Ports?

Group Sales Manager for Containers, responsible for customer relationships management, retention and sales growth across the Group’s Irish Sea network, including Liverpool RSCT, Liverpool2, Manchester Ship Canal, Dublin and Greenock.

Obviously a key part of my role will be to promote Liverpool2 and attract new services to Liverpool, a challenge which I am relishing.

3. What are the key challenges in your new role?

Working with a shipping line rather than for one is a step change, however the experience I have gained gives me a deep understanding of the challenges they face and the solutions that work for both parties - I would like to hope so anyway.

Changing the perception of the Port of Liverpool to an international gateway in the UK capable of handling the majority of the global fleet is a challenge for me and the team here. Having said that with the weight of activity and profiling we are certainly putting Liverpool back on the map.

4. What do you think about the Liverpool2 development?

Liverpool2 is a fantastic opportunity for the UK and will have a huge impact on rebalancing the economy - it is the natural gateway to the Northern Powerhouse.

Current trade patterns are distorted as the majority of containers enter the UK via southern ports but more than half are destined for or originate from the North and that can’t be right for many reasons. From an international viewpoint shippers only see one option – entering the UK via the south east and distributing their goods north by road or rail. My role is to challenge the norm and demonstrate that we are a tangible and sustainable alternative.

Liverpool2 will restore historic trading patterns, providing a robust and more cost effective supply chain for importers and exporters. It will reduce congestion on the UK road network and help with haulier productivity by reducing journeys.

Essentially Liverpool2 will enable customers to make an informed choice balancing cargo shipping routes with market proximity.

5. What are you most excited about in your new role?

I am from Liverpool so Liverpool2 represents one of the most exciting industrial developments for the city in many years; it’s a renaissance of the port, so being part of that is fantastic.

Liverpool is a city renowned for its maritime history, no more so than this year when we will celebrate the 300th anniversary of the world’s first commercial wet dock, which opened in Liverpool in 1715.

The port has and is still playing a vital role in moving more cargo to and from the Port of Liverpool – a position that will only strengthen with the opening of Liverpool2.

It will be a very proud day for the business and me personally when Liverpool2 opens and some of the world’s largest container vessels are in the River Mersey.THE GLOBAL

Page 14: Liverpool2 Issue 4

TO CREATE TRADE AND LOGISTICS CAPACITYPeel Ports is taking an active role in an ongoing initiative to create a counter-balance to the dominance of London and the South-east of England in the UK economy.

The drive to build a ‘Northern Powerhouse’ aims to bring Liverpool and other cities in the region closer together to help them reach their full potential, creating jobs, income and investment for the area, and also benefiting the country’s economy as a whole.

A key early focus for the initiative is investment in transport, with the government recently announcing a £15billion package of improvements. This will provide improved connectivity, especially to meet future demands, and facilitate other crucial developments. Liverpool will be one of the key gateways to this stronger economic region, especially with the opening of Liverpool2, supported by the existing Manchester Ship Canal.

Together, these will help global shippers take their goods closer to the heart of the UK marketplace, with reduced costs, congestion and carbon emissions.

This is especially important given the limited capacity for growth in the congested South-east, which also suffers from scarce commercial land and property, high labour costs, and shortages of heavy goods drivers. However, the area close to Liverpool, which is already UK’s most important concentration of large warehousing and distribution centres, has the potential to be a new logistics ‘centre of gravity’ for the economy, helping importers and exporters to meet the needs created by growing trade.

Peel Ports is investing more than £220 million in logistics facilities, including Port Salford, and expects that more developments will be possible with continuing improvements under the Northern Powerhouse initiative.
