MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents, Caregivers, Students and Staff,
Congratulations and thankyou to everyone for a
highly successful Term 1. There have been a
number of new initiatives and programs that
the school has initiated this year and
indicators are that the student learning
programs will be enhanced as a result.
As I indicated to you last year the school has
received an additional $680,000.00 through
the Federal Government’s National Partnership
(NP). This significant amount of money is to be
used to develop programs that will improve
student learning outcomes. After a very
rigorous evaluation of school based data two of
the areas that were most in need are literacy
and community engagement.
This term we have implemented a very detailed
and intensive three year professional learning
program to improve student literacy skills. All
students from Year 1 – 6 have had their
reading fluency and comprehension assessed
individually using a standard process and we
look forward to reporting their progress over
the year.
The school has also tried to engage more
effectively with parents and caregivers. The
NP funding has allowed us to employ a
Community Liaison Officer (CLO), two days per
week. Mrs Naffa (Maysoun) is at school
Monday and Friday and works with ALL
parents. She has organised parent programs
that run almost every Monday with sessions
being held in English and Arabic.
Last week we held our first parent teacher
conferences for 2012 and it was great to see
so many of you throughout the year. The
teachers have said that they really enjoyed
meeting with parents/caregivers and that
spreading the conferences over the week
meant more time could be spent with you.
Please let us know if you found this more
valuable. Thank you for taking the time to work
with us in educating your children.

SRC Mufti Day
MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL I trust everyone had a great day spoiling that someone special on Sunday! Liverpool
Public School celebrated Father’s Day last Friday and it was great to see so many dads,
uncles and grandfathers joining us for our Father’s Day Breakfast. The sausage sizzle and
zaata were a hit and the games on the playground were a lot of fun. I hope everyone
managed to get a great photo on the day and it is proudly displayed somewhere at
home! Thank you to our events committee who organised such an enjoyable morning.
Last week was a very busy week, and I would like to thank the staff and students for
their work organising all the activities held. Stage 3 staff and students for our annual Fun
Day on Monday; the SRC for the talent quest on Wednesday; the Liverpool Arts and Film
Festival teachers for the disco on Thursday; and all of our PSSA coaches for their time
over the last year which helped our Junior Touch Football, Senior Netball and Junior
Soccer Teams make the semi-finals. Congratulations to our Junior Netball Team who
made it to, and won their grand final! We are still waiting to find out the result for our
Senior Soccer Team after their grand final match was interrupted by a sprinkler system.
A special mention must also be made to congratulate Leona Paye from 5L who was the
11 Years Age Champion at the Liverpool Zone Athletics Carnival. She has qualified in four
different events and is off to the Sydney South West Regional Athletics Carnival.
On the theme of recognition, last week was also SASS Recognition Week which gave us
an opportunity to thank our wonderful administrative and support staff for their
valuable contribution to our school. A morning tea was organised for our SASS team to
thank them for their commitment to our school.
I have noticed that more students are arriving to school early. Please remember that
student supervision begins at 8:30am and students should not be arriving before then. I
also remind parents and carers that school finishes at 3pm. Many students are waiting
outside the school gates to be collected beyond this time. If students are not collected
by 3:15pm, they will be taken back into the school and parents or carers contacted.
Information about before and after school care is available at the office.
Please also remember that our students see us all as role models. Asking your child to
cross a busy road, ignore the crossing supervisor, or to climb into your vehicle whilst
double-parked is not only unsafe, but goes against road safety teaching and sends the
wrong message to all students who see these actions.
Yours sincerely,
Mr Ian Tapuska Principal

NAPLAN ONLINE: SCHOOL READINESS TEST-YR 3 & YR 5 As you may be aware planning has begun for the National Assessment Program-Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) to move from a pen and paper assessment to an online assessment. In order to facilitate this process NSW schools will be participating in a School Readiness Test between Monday 14 August, 2017 and the end of term. At Liverpool Public School we have selected the week from Monday 4 September to Friday 8 September, 2017 to do this ‘practice run’. Please note that this is not an assessment of student ability. The readiness test will allow us to become familiar with the online format and processes for administration of it. Also, we will be able to check that we have the technical capacity, rooms and devices to administer NAPLAN Online effectively. If you are interested in becoming more familiar with this, there is a NAPLAN Online demonstration site that includes sample tests for each NAPLAN year at the following link: http://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/naplanonline/naplan-online-public-demonstration-site Mr D’Cruz and Mrs Vajdevski have both received whole day training on this initiative and are our school based NAPLAN Administrators. If you would like further information, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Jenny Vajdevski on 9602 7882.

WOOLWORTHS EARN & LEARN 2017
Dear Parents and Carers, This year we will be participating in the Woolworths Earn & Learn program. Through this program we will be able to get new educational resources for our school. So, if you do your grocery shopping at Woolworths, we would love you to collect the stickers for us. From Wednesday 26 July to Tuesday 19 September, or while stock lasts, we are collecting Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers. You will get one Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker for every $10 spent (excluding liquor, tobacco and gift cards). Place the Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker onto a Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker Sheet and when it’s complete, the sticker sheet can be dropped into the collection box here at the school in the front office or at your local Woolworths. At the end of the promotion, we’ll be able to get some great new equipment. The range is extensive and offers lots of items ideal for our students – including resources for English, maths, science, some fantastic fun supplies for creative arts, sport and for our library. If you’d like to know more visit www.woolworths.com.au/earnandlearn
LIVERPOOL PUBLIC SCHOOL – BOOK FAIR
This year’s Scholastic Book Fair was a HUGE success, exceeding the goal with a total of $4600 in sales. Thank you to all the families who bought wonderful books for their children. Mr D’Cruz was able to pick over $1500 worth of books from Scholastic to keep in our school library for students to read. A big thank you to all the Book Fair helpers for their amazing support and hard work.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL UPDATE
The SRC have had a busy and successful term. A Mufti day was held and the total of $755.00 was raised. This money
was donated to the ‘House of Welcome’ who supports the refugee community.
The SRC also organised the annual LPS Talent Quest. There was a huge response with various acts including singing,
dancing and comedy. On Wednesday 30th August the Grand Final for the six successful acts was held.
Congratulations to the finalists, who were,
The Crystals (Dance & Sing)
Jethany – (Sing)
Xyrus – (Sing)
Girl Squad – (Dance)
The Sapphires – (Dance)
Sister Duet – (Sing)
The winner for the 2017 Talent Quest was Jethany C (4K). Congratulations.
The Teacher v Student Round 2 Dodgeball Game was held on Wednesday 2nd August during lunch. The competition
between the year 3-6 students and teachers was fierce. However, even with the support of our Principal Mr Tapuska,
the students took the win for this round. The score now stands at one all.
Ambassador Update
Our school Ambassador Toluene began Term 3 by attending her first Ambassador meeting at James Busby High
School on 20th July 2017. She was able to meet and network with other school ambassadors from across the
Liverpool region. Each ambassador was placed into an Ambassador team and informed of their upcoming projects.
Each team will undertake their projects over a 15-week-period. At the end of this period, each Ambassador Team
will present the ‘journey’ of their project, with the local school impact, at a special project presentation event. This
presentation will take place at the Liverpool Council Chambers in Term 4.
Toulene’s team consisted of three other students from Warwick Farm Public School, Ashcroft Public School and
Prestons Public School. The four School Ambassadors in this team then discussed concerns common in each of their
schools. They determined that littering was an issue and began working on ideas to combat this. A mission
statement was created; a time-line and ideas were brainstormed of how to overcome the issue of littering within
their schools.
Ashcroft Public School hosted the second meeting and Ms Comer and Toulene hosted the third meeting at Liverpool
Public School. In these meetings, the ambassadors discussed their projects and how they were progressing.
Toulene’s project began by her surveying teachers and students about the littering issue with our school. From this,
she has decided to educate students at Liverpool Public School about the effects of littering, as well as running a
Poster Drawing Competition. More information is to come . . .
By Ms Comer, Mrs Kirkness & SRC Committee.

"On Tuesday, Year 6 girls went to our school hall, where we were involved in some exciting activities. We met some students from Liverpool Girls High School who participated in the activities with us. We were split up into different groups and we participated in some activities based on some well-known books. There were a range of activities based on each book and some of them were reading, acting, drawing, writing, comic strips and a few others. One group in particular had a slightly different task to do, impromptu drama. We had no time to think and had to immediately act out a scenario that we were given. Later the girls were given a different scenario that they performed in front of all the girls. At the end we all came together, and a few girls from each group shared and discussed what their group did and if we enjoyed it. We all left with smiles on our faces and a much bigger appreciation for books. We had an awesome time with the students from Liverpool Girls High School."

"Last week the girls from Year 6 all went into the hall and joined in with some activities with the girls from Liverpool Girls High School. We all had to get into a group and the high school librarian, Mrs Knott, told us what the groups were focusing on - Drama, harry Potter, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Cinderella and a few others. I went into a group with 3 high school students. They were in Year 7 and 8. They girls were super nice when we were participating in the activities. I played a game and created a comic strip about Diary of a Wimpy Kid. At the end everyone spoke about what they did, one group, which was the drama group performed an act from the X factor, but in a comedy version. It was so much fun. I had a lovely experience with girls from my grade and from the high school."

On Monday 21 August 2017, Christine, a member from The Cancer Council presented a workshop about healthy eating to parents at Friends of Liverpool. This workshop offered parents and carers practical and relevant information on top of their existing skills in catering to their family with healthy family meals and an increase in fruits and vegetable intake. They were provided with a recipe book that contained healthy snack ideas for children and strategies to combat fussy eaters. This is a campaign in pushing parents and carers to set an example to their children to adopt a healthy eating habit and making important life decisions regarding their health. Stay tuned for more updates with our next workshop in teaching parents and carers how to make healthy convenient lunches for their children!

KINDERGARTEN ENROLMENTS 2018
Kindergarten enrolments are now open for 2018. Any child, who is turning 5 by 31st July, 2018 is eligible to start school next year. Please call in at the office for further information, between the hours of 9.30am – 2.00pm Monday to Friday. Your child needs to be registered to take part in the Transition to School Program. Also if you are a temporary visa holder you need to apply now for Kindergarten enrolment to make sure that the paper work is completed in time. If you have any neighbours with children who are eligible to start school please pass this information on to them. The school needs to know the number of students who are intending to start school so that we can organise classes, timetables and ensure a smooth start to the school year. If you have any questions please ask. We are more than happy to assist.

permission notes for excursions and events. To do this, click on Permission Notes. You will receive a notification
the day the note is sent home so you can make sure you receive the note. If not, simply download and print the
attachment. There is also a direct link to the school website for you to pay online!
adding school Events to your personal calendar by clicking on events. Look in the month the planned event is on

personalising Skoolbag to ensure you receive messages based on your child’s grade or interests. Currently you
can select to have messages sent for a specific grade. We have been adding categories for other groups such as
sporting or performance groups.
The way we will use this is, for example, instead of sending a message to the whole school about an upcoming Year 3 excursion, we will simply send it to the Year 3 category. All parents who have selected Year 3 as one of their categories will receive the message.
How to customise Skoolbag to suit your needs. To customise Skoolbag, simply open the setup option and turn on or off the categories that you wish to receive
messages from. Remember, you will still receive messages that are sent to the whole school. You won’t miss out on
important whole school information!
