Not After Nine

Screen time may negatively affect your child’s brain. According to all the experts, electronic screen syndrome (ESS) is causing sleep deprivation, social isolation, behaviour problems, and a rise in mental health issues like depression and anxiety. Parents and teachers have noticed how excess screen time makes children surly, bored and permanently “wired and tired”. But what is actually happening to the child’s brain? Researchers have shown that the frontal lobe development is actually being retarded by this screen time. This is the part of the brain which is responsible for the child’s attention span, controlling emotions and empathic skills. Staying connected may mean that your child is becoming disconnected from real life. Teddington School recently ran a control group with Year 8 parents with a new campaign called #NotAfterNine which aims to reduce screen time during term time for children. The results have been promising, with parents in the group reporting that their children have started to read again before bed time, are sleeping better and are engaging in family life before bed time. They have also reported a general reduction in anxiety levels relating to friendship issues. Many parents have simply expressed that they feel like they have got their child back during that hour. #NotAfterNine is empowering parents to help reduce screen-time for their children. One of the struggles with monitoring screen time is your child feeling as if they are missing out, because many of their other friends are still online until late. Often friendship issues escalate later into the evening as children become tired and emotional. Many child psychologists agree that after 9pm is not a good time for children to be online precisely for this reason. #NotAfterNine is a simple idea to motivate parents to support each other in implementing an online curfew on a school night by all agreeing to switch off at the same time, then remove all electronic devices from their bedroom. How to do it? Find out who your child’s main group of friends are either on social media, online gaming, or their

friendship group at school;. Form a support network of parents using either email, text messaging or even the ClassList App; Agree a time that allows your children to be off line for at least an hour before bed on a school

night, according to their bedtime. Keeping to the offline by 9.00 pm on a school night. Check in with your support group and keep each other motivated to stay strong and be firm about

taking away electronic devices. By giving your child at least one screen free hour before bed on a school night you are reclaiming at least three full weeks of screen free time every year! Unplug and charge all gadgets overnight elsewhere in the house not in the bedroom, as new research indicates that even having a electronic device in the bedroom overnight can interfere with sleep. Teddington School would like to spread this message so if you would like to become involved, feel free to tweet or post about the initiative on Facebook or Instagram using #NotAfterNine. We will be holding a Parent Forum on Tuesday 11 December from 7.00pm to hear from an expert on the subject, and to allow parents to network and support each other in winning their children back. Details will follow soon. Let’s get our children offline by 9pm on a school night! Mr Golding Head of Year 8

This Week in School

Year 10 GCSE Religious Studies students were invited to attend a remembrance event at Westminster Abbey on Monday 5 November. They had a guided tour around the Abbey, looking at the ways that victims of war are remembered, whether they are fallen soldiers or civilian victims of war. They saw the poignant memorial of the ‘Unknown Warrior’ which represents all the fallen soldiers past and present, especially those that do not have an official grave. The students took part in a short memorial service at the grave to remember the sacrifice of these soldiers. After the tour there was a discussion with the Reverend Anthony Ball, Canon Steward of Westminster Abbey, Lieutenant General Sir Simon Mayall, retired British Army Officer and Middle East Advisor at the Ministry of Defence, Imam Asim Hafiz OBE MA, Islamic Religious Advisor to Chief of Defence Staff and Service Chiefs UK and Rabbi (Major) Reuben Livingstone, Senior Jewish Chaplain to HM Armed Forces about their views on war and how their religious beliefs have affected these views. The students were exemplary and this was commented on by the staff at Westminster Abbey.

Teddington School paid homage to our community’s fallen soldiers of WW1, as part of the school’s on-going remembrance events for the centenary of WW1. Teigan Hawkes, Kayra Aldemir, Alfie Endemaño and Baillie Sharp led the event. There was an announcement over the address system to declare that the war is over. They read an honour roll of fallen soldiers, verses from the poem by Robert Laurence Binyon “For the Fallen and broadcast the Last Post. Lessons stopped at 3.00pm to enable the whole school can observe the memorial. There were also key stage assemblies to mark Remembrance Day.

The hanging installation of hand made poppies made by students in their textiles lesson has now been installed in the main reception.

Just by starting online shopping on the easyfundraising page, and then shopping as normal, retailers make a donation to say “thank you”. There are 3,493 retailers on the site and so far we've raised £2,558.40 This week it’s your last chance to raise twice as much for Teddington School PTA with some of your favourite retailers. Curl up with a good book from Book People to raise a double donation of 5%, or shop with Currys PC World to take advantage of some great tech deals, and raise a double donation of 1.5%.

Please sign up for Classlist— the trusted platform where parents help each other and together build stronger, happier school communities, all over the world. If we can get one parent from each family to join we can have an online space that can be accessed by the whole school community. It lets you easily organise all the things you need to around your children and the school doesn't need to get involved in data protection issues. It’s a great way of getting linking with other parents in your class, year or whole school. From simple information requests about homework or lost kit to organising a birthday part or whole school event.
