A. FICTION - derived from the Latin fictio , “the act of making and fashioning,or molding.”

-created from imagination-not presented as fact ,though it may be based

on a true story or situation.

SUB-TYPES OF FICTION: Short Story Novel

Short Story- a work of fiction that is usually written in prose, often in narrative format.

The Philosophy of Composition- Edgar Allan Poe’s essay

Edgar Allan Poe- father of the short story

ANCIENT FORM OF SHORT STORY:• Fables- a succinct story, in prose or verse, that features

animals, mythical creatures, inanimate objects/ nature that illustrates a moral lesson.

Aesop- earliest known writer of fables

Aesop’s Fables- popular moral stories

• parable - a succinct, didactic story, in prose or verse, which illustrates one or more instructive lessons.

-have human characters. - a type of analogy.

• Anecdote-popular under the Roman Empire

- a brief realistic narrative that embodies a point

Gesta Romanorum- a Latin collection of anecdotes and tales that was probably compiled about the end of the 13th century or the beginning of the 14th.

Sir Roger de Coverley- published his fictional anecdotal letters

Novel- a fictitious prose narrative of considerable length and complexity.

- portray characters and usually presenting a sequential organization of action and scenes.

B. Non- Fiction(nonfiction)- is an account, narrative or representation of a subject which an author presents a facts.

Examples of non-fiction:• essays * biographies * textbooks• journals * travel books * blue prints• histories * technical documentation• scientific papers * user manuals• photographs * diagrams

C. Poetry- uses aesthetic and rhythmic qualities of language.

• Poems- a composition written in verse- rely heavily on imagery, precise word

choice, and metaphor.

D. Drama - derived from “to do”, meaning “action”

-specific mode of fiction represented in performance.

Hamlet- early modern tragedy by Shakespeare

Oedipus the King by Sophocles-the classical Athenian tragedy

- the supreme masterpieces of the art of drama.

Satire - a way of using humor to show that someone or something is foolish, weak, bad, etc.

: humor that shows the weaknesses or bad qualities of a person, government, society, etc.

Black Comedy – dark humorRomantic Comedy - depicts romance in

humorous terms
