CfE Literacy - Writing
Os&Es Success Criteria
Level 3 ‘Secure’
Writing - Enjoyment and Choice:
- within a motivating and challenging environment, developing an awareness of the relevance of texts in my life.
LIT 3-20a
I enjoy creating texts of my choice and I am developing my own style. I can regularly select subject, purpose, format and resources to suit the needs of my audience.
Success Criteria:
1. Using the opportunities provided in class I can create texts that I enjoy writing.
2. I choose the content and style of my writing pieces.
3. Using resources available to me such as the internet, photographs and other texts, I can select information
that suits my reader.
Writing - Tools for writing:
– using knowledge of technical aspects to help my writing communicate effectively within and beyond my place of learning
LIT 3-21a
I can use a range of strategies and resources and spell most of the words I need to use, including specialist vocabulary, and ensure that my spelling is accurate.
Success Criteria:
1. I can use a dictionary.
2. I can use a thesaurus.
3. I make a note of spelling errors and use ‘look, cover, spell, check’ to learn corrections.
LIT 3-22a
As appropriate to my purpose and type of text, I can punctuate and structure different types of sentences with sufficient accuracy, and arrange these to make meaning clear, showing straightforward relationships between paragraphs.
Success Criteria:
1. I can use basic punctuation correctly (full stops, commas, inverted commas, exclamation marks, question marks, and apostrophe.)
2. I can use punctuation (including brackets, dashes, etc) to create more complex sentences.
3. Through the use of topic sentences and connectives, I can link paragraphs clearly.
4. By varying sentence structure in longer pieces I can create different effects such as climax and anti-climax.
LIT 3-23a
Throughout the writing process, I can review and edit my writing to ensure that it meets its purpose and communicates meaning at first reading.
Success Criteria:
1. I can produce writing that is organised logically in terms of sentence structure and paragraphing.
2. My writing makes sense at first reading.
3. When given a specific task I can produce a response that is relevant.
4. As I am writing I regularly read through my work and make improvements.
5. After reading a first draft I make changes to improve my writing.
6. Using feedback from others I redraft and improve my writing.
LIT 3-24a
I can consider the impact that layout and presentation will have on my reader, selecting and using a variety of features appropriate to purpose and audience.
Success Criteria:
1. I am aware of many different types of writing including: formal and informal letter, email, blog, persuasive
essay, discursive essay, brochure, poster, personal essay to explore thoughts and feelings, short story,
poetry, drama.
2. I can choose a format for my writing i.e. letter, essay, poster, etc that will appeal to my specific audience.
3. I can use visual diagrams to enhance the impact of my writing when appropriate i.e. on posters or in
newspaper articles.
4. I can organise ideas logically.
5. I can use a variety of sentence structures.
6. I can paragraph accurately using linking words and phrases.
7. My writing can be understood on first reading.

LIT 3-25a
I can use notes and other types of writing to generate and develop ideas, retain and recall information, explore problems, make decisions, generate and develop ideas or create original text.
I recognise when it is appropriate to quote from sources and when I should put points into my own words. I can acknowledge my sources appropriately.
Success Criteria:
1. I can take concise notes from the texts being studied in class and from reference books, websites, articles
in preparation for non-fiction writing.
2. I can read the ideas of others and summarise these in my own words.
3. I can quote from reliable sources.
4. I know how to reference quotes.
5. I can create an accurate bibliography.
LIT 3-26a
By considering the type of text I am creating, I can independently select ideas and relevant information for different purposes, and organise essential information or ideas and any supporting detail in a logical order. I can use suitable vocabulary to communicate effectively with my audience.
Success Criteria:
1. I can plan and structure work independently as appropriate to the purpose of the task.
2. I can choose relevant information to include in my writing.
3. I organise my work in a way that makes sense on first reading.
4. I structure my writing to create impact on my reader.
5. I can use a suitable register.
6. I can use a range of vocabulary suitable for the topic and purpose.

LIT 3-11a
I regularly select and read, listen to or watch texts for enjoyment and interest, and I can express how well they meet my needs and expectations and give reasons, with evidence, for my personal response.
I can identify sources to develop the range of my reading.
Success Criteria:
1. I am comfortable selecting texts to read both in class and in my spare time.
2. I can review and critique a text and highlight why it is enjoyable and interesting.
3. I can identify and use the correct terminology required to complete a critical evaluation of a text.
4. I can use quotes from the text to back up the points that I am making.
5. I can share my opinion on a text and explain if it met my needs as a reader.
6. I can highlight other texts that would broaden my reading range.
LIT 3-13a
I can select and use the strategies and resources I find most useful before I read, and as I read, to monitor and check my understanding.
Success Criteria:
1. I can write a chapter summary after I finish each chapter.
2. I can complete a character timeline as I progress through the text.
3. I can answer questions on the text to check my understanding.

Using what I know about the features of different types of texts, I can find, select, sort, summarise, link and use information from different sources.

Lit 3-01a
I regularly select and listen to or watch texts for enjoyment and interest, and I can express how well they meet my needs and expectations, and I can give reasons, with evidence, for my personal response. I can regularly select subject, purpose, format and resources to create texts of my choice, and am developing my own style.
Success Criteria:
1. I enjoy listening to or watching a variety of texts including film, TV programmes and Radio programmes
2. I am comfortable talking about or analysing these texts
3. I can analyse these texts and can discuss why I enjoy them
4. I understand the techniques these texts use in order to further my enjoyment of them
5. I can transfer the techniques used in these texts to help inform my own development
6. I can create texts using these techniques
