Sounds like a problem with either the kernel config or /etc/inittab,whats the last message you see before it reboots?

Hi all...

I have a weird problem that is kind of off topic, but here goes anyway...

I have an *old* laptop collecting dust, and i have been wondering what it would take to get it up and running with LFS.

The problem is it doesnt have enough diskspace to install a host distro *and* lfs, and it doesnt have a cd-rom drive so i can build LFS from a boot cd.

I was thinking that i might be abel to boot off a floppy based mini distro with nfs support that would allow me to chroot to a real distro via the network so i could start the installation on the empty disk on my laptop. Is this even possible? Does anybody know of a floppy based distro that could do that?

Are there other ways i could do this that i have overlooked?

I would prefer not to install a donor distro on the laptop because i want to have only one partition to conserve space.

There's a whole topic based on this covered in the LFS Hints:

http://hints.linuxfromscratch.org/hints/crosscompiling-x86.txt

The synopsis says it all:

"SYNOPSIS: How to compile LFS on a fast machine and use it on your old box"

If your laptop has a HD too small to host a temporary distro and create theLFS distro, then odds are pretty good that the processor and memory in thatdust ball would probably take a week to compile bash alone. :)

Save yourself some time and agony, and learn some interesting stuff in theprocess, by following the steps in that cross compiling hint.

Most likely kernel config, Wrong processor architecture selected.Go back and make sure your kernel is built for i586 arch (default isi686).

If the above IS set incorrecty, change the value and recompile the kerneland update the bootloader.

Hi. I am just getting started building building a system using the 4.0RC1book, and I was wondering if anyone had any experience building it withunder a user-mode linux environment. I am not trying to run UML on a LFSsystem (I saw that there is a hint doc for that), I am trying to go theother direction. I would like to start out with a blank UML partition fileand build up the system that way. That way I can experiment and get it rightwithout mucking with my current setup. Is that possible? Has anyone done it?Are there any docs/hints out there for this?

Any help or pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks, Michael

Don't.

rc2, rc3 and the final Mandrake 9 will not LFS as is. Period.

Try not to top-post, it's confusing.

Mandrake 9 uses bash-2.05b, so you're automatically fscked. But evenretrofitting bash-2.05a onto it, which I've done on rc2, rc3 and 9final, Mandrake has stopped including the glibc libraries necessary tobuild even static bash with. Reinstalling glibc, which isnon-trivial, might get you out of it, but I've not tested that.

Ok, I think I figured it out. By default, Mandrake does not install the glibc-static-devel package. After installing that, it seems to work ok.

Assuming you have a second (full-sized) machine around, dig around onlineor at your local geek shops for a mini-ATA adapter. You should be able tofind one for under $10 without much trouble. Then you can stick it onyour mini-ATA hard drive, and then attach it to a normal sized IDE bus anduse it like a regular old hard drive. (In fact, since my notebook died,it's what I have been using here so that I woulnd't lose access to all theshell scripts and whatnot that I'm using to buildw with)

I have an old 2.5g drive in an old pc that I want to create my lfs systemon. trouble is I have nothing to install my base system on except threedrives 200/124/124mb.

I can create a system with 400mb raid and a tiny swap partition but willthis be enough to get developement stuff I need on there. if so what is thebare minimum packages I need (I'm using a Mandrake 7.2 cd I found)

If 400mb is not enough can anyone suggest a better way to do the install?..I could split my 2.5 gig and install it on that but at the end of theinstallation I will only want my lfs install and not my base system..

If not is there someone in Melbourne I can borrow a 1 gig drive off to doinstall my base system to. I am unemployed and my girlfriend wont pay for ahdd. (she hates linux 2).

I've built several LFS systems on the same partition as thehost system. The procedure is as follows:

(1) Build according to the LFS book, except simply create a directory in the host partition file system instead of mounting another partition.

(2) When finished, run the lilo command from within the chroot environment. If it fails, do not shutdown or restart the system until the problem is resolved, lilo is run again from the host system, whatever...

(3) Boot up from floppy, using Tom's root/boot disk

(4) Mount the hard disk partition on /mnt

(5) Create a directory such as /mnt/OLD.LINUX and move all the other directories in /mnt into this new directory

(6) Move the directories from your LFS directory down into /mnt

(7) Reboot from the hard disk

(8) When everything is up and running properly, and you don't need anything from the host distribution, delete the /OLD.LINUX directory

This procedure has worked everytime for me. I have heard somewhere theclaim that running lilo from within a chroot is dangerous, although I'mnot sure exactly what the dangers are. When I have accidentally trashedthe boot sector by using a misconfigured lilo.conf, whatever, I havebeen able to get things going again working only from Tom's root/boot disk.(This usually involves creating a whole new /boot directory, since thereare some version issues between Tom's root/boot and LFS.) But that'sthe worst that has ever happened to me. (Anyone like to elaborate onthe issues, if any, of running lilo from within a chroot?) No guaranteesit will work for anyone else, though...

Hope that helps at least a little...

I think a simple solution would be to split your disk in two. Since youwon't need the base system, make a new filesystem on its partition afteryou are done making LFS. Call it '/scratch' or something. Later, you can use your new system as the base, and build a newer system onthe partition used as your former base system. Repeat indefinitely. This sort of thing also works as a way to install distributions downloadedover the internet, without a CDROM. ("install from local hard disk").

I've been doing this through many re-installs, many distributions, andam only now beginning to do my first LFS install. This method allowsyou to keep your old system running until you are happy with the new one.

The way I would do it is, split the 2.5 GB drive in half, use the first half for your host distro (say, Slack 8.1's A, D, L, and N series), and the second part for LFS. Once your LFS is finished, you can substitute the host distro's partition somewhere into your current structure - /home or /usr would be good choices, IMHO.

You can create a single 2.5 gig partition, install the host system on itand install the LFS system on the same partition using the hint

Hello,

start compiling as i386 that always should work. If not - your problem isnot the kernel itself.

You'll need devpts; make sure you have this line in your /etc/fstab:

devpts /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0

Of course /dev/pts file system & Unix98 PTY support must me enabledin the kernel.

Alternatively you can use devfs, but it's probably not worth the hassle.

ok..using 4.0-RC1following book exactly (I think)can't fine any 'make' logs or anything to copy any more of the error youneed about this segmentation fault.

I'm assuming it's hardware because I haven't found any postings about it andthe compileI did last night caused a segmentation fault while building adifferent file.

That faq is what lead me to believe it was hardware.Since my last post I have replaced my 64mb 72pin with a 32mb SDRAM moduleand the compile went perfectly.

This same system had run without displaying a problem on win95 runningdefrag+virus scan+scandisk sometimes all at once and left going withscheduled tasks for days without a lockup. compiling gcc will be my newramtest from now on.

What do you mean ``nothing happens''? Does your computer hang? Or doyou just go back to the shell prompt? Does configure create aconfig.log file? If yes, you could find the relevant parts of it andpost them here (_don't_ post the whole file, it is usually ratherhuge).

Are you in chapter 5 or 6?

- And maybe you should install the CVS version instead of 3.3. CVSseems to be very stable.

Hello,

I'm installing a LFS 3.3 version on a computer.Everything is going great, and I like LFS a lot.Gives me more understanding on how LINUX works.

But my question is, I've installed all the base packages,en now do a chroot to de LFS directory. Is going ok, but now when I do a

ls -al

I get hughe numbers for the size:

for example .bash_profile:

-rw------- 1 0 0 17592186044416 Oct 3 08:15 .bash_profile

Al the other files and directries have these hughe sizes too.I've installed a Reiserfs filesystem, maybe this has anything to do with it?

Compiling glibc-2.2.5 doesn't work, I get lots of messages about file's too large.

Hi all,

in the lfs book there is to read about a 5mb apache-server-system.but when you try to build an lfs using the book, you will end upwith much more space being used.

I want to build an lfs running the following:apache+php (no perl), mysql, sambaserver, opensshserver, some secure firewall, everythingneeded to route a dsl-connection to a local network, bash with sometools.

how can i figure out what to keep from the book and what to get ridof? is there a sort of techtree which shows dependencies betweenpackages?

That should be Redhat 7.3? Last I heard, the latest Linux stable kernel release was 2.4.19:)

Which chapter are you in - Chapter 5 or 6? I am assuming Ch 5. Have you installed all the required development packages?

Ouch. 17.5TB .bash_profile? must take that sucker a while to start up;-)

I think you need a copy of reiserfsck ASAP.

Hello

Thank you all for your answers.

I read the Boot CD-hint to help me do the following:Create a 2MB ramdiskMount it /mnt/ramdiskMove /tmp and /var to the ramdiskCreate symlinks with "ln -sf"

It seems (?) to be a problem that "/dev" is mounted read-only. Modprobe is still complaining about missing "char-major-7". Telnet fails with "all networks ports in use" because "openpty" fails. Apache will not start (no reason given).

What steps is to be taken ?

The easiest way would be to use devfs, that way, /dev exists only in kernelRAM. Another thing you could do is put /dev onto the ramdisk.

That's very possible.

The only thing I can think of that might be causing errors like this wouldbe if your reiserfs tools were out of step with your kernel. If you canrecompile your kernel with a reasonable expectation that the new one willwork, build kernel 2.4.19 onto your system, and update your reiserfstools.

...or take the easy way out and just use ext3. :)

;) Need to figure out what you ment here.

My experience has been that screen is an admin's best friend. Workingmultiple tasks on the same systems while working a dozen or moresystems at at time would require up to 10x more xterms on your desktopto get the same job done. Having 1 xterm per system, with up to 10windows, makes life a lot easier. Being able to split screens whileediting is another big help. If my workstation died while testingsomething else, just connect back to the systems and reconnect yourscreen process, and your back in business. Screen is your friend. The nice thing is, that you can make it fit your configurationrequirements.

I think you have to manually copy the db185.so etc files to a lib directory.(Make install doesn't do this by default)There is a good gnome hint somewhere in blfs which tells you how to do this.

Enh... no biggie. Remove the versions you've installed before and get3.1.17 (I'm assuming you want to run Evolution and it needs _that_specific version). Pass the configure script the arguments--enable-shared --enable-compat185 --enable-cxx in addition to the--prefix=/usr (I HOPE that's what you're using, otherwise you'll need totell gnome-libs about the other prefix probably). Do the install asusual, and then make a /usr/include/db3 directory, and inside that putsyminks pointing to wherever the _real_ files db.h, db_185.h, anddb_cxx.h are sitting.

The reason you have to have that subdirectory is something you can blameRedHat for.

Well, until you yourself know exactly which files in /dev need to be thereand at what times, /dev needs to be writeable. (And in actuality, it willprobably STILL need to be writeable.) The good news is that /dev/ cantypically be stripped down to under 50 files with little or no trouble.

(I just checked the LFS and it doesn't say anything about that so don'tfeel bad. I'll bother the author about that point if I can come up with afew more reasonable arguments one way or the other)

The only dependencies in the book right now are the installation dependencies. I don't know of any run-time dependency trees in existence right now, but you could do a trial&error (that's how I got an LFS system mentioned in the LFS book down to 5 MB. Just kept removing things until other programs stopped working, but I never documented what I had to keep to get Apache running properly and all that).

Once it's out, it's out, youdon't go modding it.. that's what CVS is for :)
