Tentative List of Robotic Systems and Technologies to be considered for further research and presentations by students in Medical Robotics Course Spring 09.10

1. Aesop 1000 , Zeus or Hermes (Computer Motion, USA); The first surgical robot was

called with multiple improvements and variants, such as. Zeus Surgical System ZEUS is

a minimally invasive robotic surgery system. ZEUS can be known as an RSS

alternatively. ZEUS is known widely since it was used in a tele-surgery operation where

the surgeon was in New York and the patient was in France on September 7th, 2001.The

current average cost of a ZEUS robotic surgery system is approximately $975,000 [1] It is

only $25,000 less than the Intuitive Surgical Da Vinci system. In 2003 Computer Motion

Inc. was acquired by Intuitive Surgical. The ZEUS system is now completely owned and

maintained by Intuitive Surgical and is no longer sold.

2. The daVinci Surgical System was developed by Intuitive Surgical, derived from the

gMPS™ Ready CathLab

A CathLab in which the gMPS™ technology is integrated. This

integration enables immediate tracking of any gMPS™-Enabled

Device within the working area of the imaging system. It also

enables Smart Trace™ (3-D measurements on live fluoroscopy),

Virtual Landmark™ (placement of 3-D markers on live

fluoroscopy) and pseudo Bi-plan mode. gMPS™ Ready CathLabs

are developed in cooperation with MediGuide's business partners,

Philips Medical Systems and Siemens Medical Solutions.

The CorPathTM Vascular Robotics System

Contact info:http://www.corindus.com/ContactUs.aspx

The CorPath system is a vascular robotic system that precisely drives coronary guidewires and

stent/balloon catheters during PCI procedures.

The ergonomically designed interventional cockpit is designed to protect the physician from

radiation exposure while he or she is maneuvering interventional devices using intuitive controls.

14. Surgical Segment Navigator

The Surgical Segment Navigator (SSN) is a computer-based system for use in surgical

navigation. It is integrated into a common platform, together with the Surgical Tool Navigator

(STN), the Surgical Microscope Navigator (SMN) and the 6DOF Manipulator (MKM),

developed by Carl Zeiss.

Surgical navigation for the orbit and zygoma on the SSN system (Color coding for the

preoperative, predicted and goal position of the fragments, respectively)

Page 9: List of Projects - Drexel University - Comprehensive, integrated

The SSN has been developed as a computer system for bone segment navigation in oral and

maxillofacial surgery. It allows a very precise repositioning of bone fragments, with the advent

of preoperative simulation and surgical planning. The system has been developed since 1997 at

the University of Regensburg, Germany, with the support of the Carl Zeiss Company.

15. http://www.makosurgical.com/hospitals/ MAKOplasty® offers hospitals and surgeons an innovative surgical solution that brings the advantages of unicompartmental and multicompartmental knee procedures to a broader patient population suffering from early to mid-stage osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee while striving to align improved outcomes with economic value for net health economic benefits.

The key is the RIO® Robotic Arm Interactive Orthopedic System that allows for precise preoperative planning and modeling and facilitates consistently reproducible precision.

PillCam ESO

The PillCam ESO video capsule measures 11 mm x 26 mm and weighs less than 4 grams. It contains an imaging device and light source at both ends of the video capsule and takes up to 14 images per second as it passes down the esophagus during the procedure.

PillCam ESO was initially cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in November 2004. It was developed for patients suffering from esophageal disorders, such as esophageal varices, which can result in fatal bleeding, and Barrett's esophagus, which is an early indication for esophageal cancer.

Page 10: List of Projects - Drexel University - Comprehensive, integrated

The Company's next generation esophageal video capsule, PillCam ESO 2, was cleared for marketing by U.S. Food and Drug Administration in May 2007. It is the same size as the PillCam ESO video capsule but has a wider angle of view, automatic light control now captures images at a rate of 18 frames per second or 30% more images over PillCam ESO.

How the Procedure Works

A patient fasts for two hours prior to arriving at the physician's office. Upon arriving at the physician’s office, patients follow a Simplified Ingestion Procedure (SIP). While standing, the patient drinks 100 mL of water. The patient then lies on his/her right side, swallows the PillCam ESO video capsule and takes one sip of water every thirty seconds for seven minutes. After seven minutes, the patient sits upright, drinks another sip of water and waits for thirty seconds. The total procedure takes approximately thirty minutes and can be performed in the doctor’s office, hospital, or clinic.

Images are downloaded by the physician to the Given workstation for review and diagnosis. The proprietary RAPID software installed on the workstation contains an image atlas to help facilitate the analysis.

CARTO 3 System

The visualization you want, with the accuracy you need. The CARTO 3 System continues to deliver the

unparalleled accuracy that has made CARTO System technology the leader in 3D mapping. The system also

introduces three important new capabilities that can elevate your procedures to a whole new level.

Accurate visualization allows you to see all catheters in the anatomy with precision and clarity. Increased

mapping speed with FAM enables you to map as fast as you can move the catheter. Streamlined

workflow allows both you and your lab staff to work more efficiently.

CARTO XP EP Navigation System

The CARTO XP EP Navigation System was the world’s first 3-D electroanatomical navigation system. It

provides unprecedented views into the electrical activity of the heart through real-time data on 3-D, color-

coded cardiac maps. It also ensures precise real-time tracking of catheter location, allowing for safe and

accurate diagnosis.
