Dance at The Lismore ShowOn Friday 20 October 2017, The Rivers Secondary College had 30 dancers perform at the Lismore Show. The students participated in two half hour shows on the day. The groups involved were: The Rivers Combined Sport Ensemble, The Rivers Dance Ensemble, the Lismore High Campus Year 9 elective class and the Year 12 dance students. The students performed under difficult circumstances, such as wet ground and limited stage space, but their hard work throughout the year prepared them to effortlessly overcome these obstacles and put on two spectacular performances. A special mention to Zoe Klein who performed and was also the compete in the second show.

Well done to all involved.

The Rivers 7-8 Public Speaking Competition We were invited to join this competition, held at The North Coast National. We had play-offs in the school and our three candidates were Daisy Thompson, Year 8, Isabel Kemp and Kirra Protheroe, Year 7.

Unfortunately, Kirra had to pull out with a vicious spider bite but Daisy and Isabel continued on, planning great speeches, practicing and happily accepting our feedback throughout.

The topic for the evening was “If I was Prime Minister for a day”. Both girls presented a balance of humour and serious content and over the preparation period showed excellent development of their presentation skills.

We are pleased to announce that Daisy and Isabel performed beautifully on the night and Daisy was placed first. She has won a trip for two to Canberra (including flights and accommodation) where she will meet the Federal member for Page, Kevin Hogan.

The prize was donated by Sean Radburn from Sommerville Laundry Lomax Solicitors.

Congratulations to all involved and thank you to families for their support and encouragement.

Lismore Show success for Visual Arts studentsCongratulations to all the students who entered artworks and photography in the North Coast National Lismore Show. They were Ross Kemp, Zoe Klein, Tahlia Massey, Trisha Kemp, Sophie Halliday, Tigerlilly Corkill, Isabel Kemp, Jack Smith, Eve Butler, Jacinda Dunwoodie-Halverson, Amber Weir, Ella Campbell and Peachy Ihalainen. It is great to see students taking the opportunity to showcase their skills and participate in extracurricular activities such as this.

Special congratulations go to Zoe Klein who won First Prize in the Youth Art 13 years and under 18 years section for one of her paintings as well as the Judges Encouragement Award for her second entry. Both paintings were of the rainforest inspired by “The Rainforest” unit studied in Year 8. Sophie Halliday received a Highly Commended from the judges in the Youth Art 13 years and under 18 years section. Ross Kemp’s digital artwork won 3rd prize in the Youth Art 13 years and under 18 years section and sold for $150 which I hope encourages Ross to continue developing his personal style in this media. Well done to all these students and enjoy your prize money.

Praise for Lismore HighThe following was received from a former student, Sarah Hort who finished Year 12 at Lismore High Campus in 2012.

Sarah was a very dedicated student who has gone on to achieve the goals she set herself and is an excellent example for all Lismore High students to follow.

Her email is as follows:

Hey Jaffa, hope you’re well. On Monday I will hand in my very last assignments for my law degree and then I will be done and dusted with uni (well, unless I do postgrad sometime in the future...). An international corporate law firm has offered me a graduate lawyer position starting in March next year so I will be pursuing that and who knows where I end up. Starting in their Sydney office but their London office has 1000 lawyers so I might head that way in a few years’ time.

Anyway, now that uni is coming to an end I have been thinking a bit about how far I’ve come in these last 5 years. From a country bumpkin with a dream to a graduate lawyer with an incredible career ahead of me. This year I was even able to study in New York City over the winter break. As much I really wanted this as a teenager stuck in Lismore, I never imagined any of it was actually possible for someone like me. I just wanted to say thank you for all your help and support in Year 12. I know I was a high maintenance student but it’s all been worth it. I couldn’t have got into law at UNSW without your support and guidance. I don’t have any contact details for any of the other teachers (Jenny Josey, Frank Swientek, Lindsay Kitching etc) but if they’re still around, please give them my regards. People like you guys are invaluable to country kids with big dreams.

Fishing at Lismore HighThis term at Lismore High we have offered fishing as one of the sport electives for students to choose from.

A group of ten students has taken this option and been going out fishing each week for sport. The students have been fishing at various locations along the Richmond River and are hoping later in the term to fish a couple of spots down in Ballina.

The students are enjoying the experience especially so when we catch some fish. Our record catch so far has been a 55cm carp caught by Troy Hepburn.

Although students are encouraged to bring their own gear we realise that not all will be able to do this. If any of our students’ families have any fishing gear that they could donate to the school for use in this program it would be greatly appreciated.
