Recently the Grade 6 students at Dromana Primary School and one art class at Dromana Secondary College participated in the Lions Peace Poster Competition. This is the Club's second year of participation and the response has been wonderful. Thirteen secondary college students and fifty primary school students took part. Three kits were purchased, so there were three competitions and hence three winners. The children produced many fine posters and all enjoyed the experience. The photo shows the two winners at Dromana P.S., Dimitri and Mia, being congratulated by Club President Colin Stevens (extreme left) and the two judges, Jan and Peter Noss (both retired art teachers). A wonderful project and one that our local teachers have endorsed and supported from day one.

From the Cabinet Secretary I hope you have all registered for the District Convention at McCrae and are looking forward to hearing the interesting guest speakers DG Neil has arranged they are all very entertaining. The convention is a time to renew old friendships, start new ones and most of all enjoy ourselves and have FUN.

Please ensure you have sent to me Return No 2 – Delegates for the Convention this form is very important to ensure your members can vote on the notice of motions and Lions standing for the executive positions of our District.

It is important that all clubs have paid their dues – District, Multiple District and/or International – not only does this cause embarrassment to myself when I have to knock back voting rights at convention but it also causes your delegates embarrassment at the registration desk. All of these accounts must be paid by the 10th October to Cabinet Treasurer Lion David.

I hope that those clubs who have deceased members have returned to me a photo and short Bio of the members to enable them to be included in the remembrance ceremony at the convention please ensure this happens as soon as possible.

Nominations for the following positions have been received for the Convention –

Thank-you At a very difficult time in my life my second family “Lions” came to my rescue along with family and friends.

I can’t express adequately how grateful I have been to you for the cards, flowers, phone calls, attendance at George’s farewell and for helping with food after the ceremony at the Pearcedale Hall.

I feel sure that George would have been humbled at the recognition given to him. Lions was such an important part of his life outside of his family.

Thank you seems inadequate but it is the best words that I can say at the moment.

Please accept this as my personal thanks.

You can make up a team of Ladies, Lions, Mixed, or a personal cake, but it has to be a Lions Xmas cake; a 1.5 KG or

a 1kg. So get your brains into gear and get going and good luck. At

the time of printing have had one request for Cake Decorating Competition at the Convention. Get to it lions or

Global Action Team—The GAT Corner

Global service Team (GST) As part of “Campaign Plus One”, each club will need to add a new purely service activity before January 1st 2020.

There are many great service projects available to each club and they don’t have to be large service activities. Visiting a local nursing home for a little while would be acceptable

Lions Lap the Map on 17th November- get involved and have your kilometres walk added to the rest of Australia’s.

If you need any ideas, I am only a phone call away!!

Maurice Blackburn GST Coordinator 201V3

Global Membership Team (GMT) As I write this report our membership is sitting at 1221 which is an amazing growth from where we stood 12 months ago, so please pat yourselves on the back, because we know what a great job the clubs are doing in gaining new members and retaining their existing members

We also have been told there are at least 10 new members out there, that have not been entered into LCI yet and there are probably. Please remember to register your new members on LCI ASAP after induction, otherwise their anniversary dates will not match and they will not get the credit for years of service when it is due.

Your Global Membership team have been very busy. We have run successful membership drives at Bruthen and are rebuilding Orbost. Although our trailer is not finished yet , we still have everything we need to run a successful membership drive in your area. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you would like a membership drive in your area

I only have 3 Zones left to visit, but remember we are here to help. Just give us a call or drop us an email if you believe your club needs help!

Monthly GAT meetings- Our online monthly GAT forum for every member of our district family, is off to a good start. We had a very productive forum run on the 12th of September. We had a fun forum covering aspects of membership, leadership and service. These were presented in a fun, easy to understand format, through our district online Zoom platform. Now for all those computer illiterate, techno fobes amongst our lions members who just cringed at the thought of an online meeting and I include myself in this category, rest assure that this is an easy platform to navigate. Our next online GAT forum is on the will be on October 10th, 2019.

DG Neal and the team have launched “Campaign Plus One, an exciting challenge for your club to participate in. Please see the flyer in this newsletter

I look forward to working with you all to make our district great and transition free.

Kerrie McMahon 201V3 GMT coordinator -0405 956 800

Global Leadership Team (GLT) as part of “Campaign Plus One, you have been challenged to add a new leadership initiative this year.

This could include 1 member doing an online course and reporting back to the whole club, or you could send a member to a regional emerging lions leadership course (RELLI). Which are coming up soon.

Please call me if you need any help

Bill Lack 201V3 GLT coordinator

What is campaign plus one? Campaign plus one, is a set of challenges to every lions clubs across district 201 V3, to have achieved by the 1st of January 2020.

From the District Governor Keep the momentum going it’s contagious and leads to more fun and success. We’ve now moved into the second quarter of our Lions year and every Club that I’ve visited has been buzzing with activity and energy. Here’s trusting that we maintain this energy and momentum as we move into warmer weather and busier times.

October will be a busy month with more Club visitations, a Cabinet meeting, Junior Public Speaking District Final and our own Convention on the last weekend of October at Rosebud. I’m also aiming to visit other Victorian District Conventions at Healesville, Preston and Nhill, along with Bairnsdale Lions 50th anniversary celebrations. I’m looking forward to meeting many members and learning about their projects and activities.

More about our Convention – as I’ve said before, this is the greatest opportunity for members to interact with and meet others from across our District as well as visitors from other Districts. We’ll be on show with static displays, showing Lions projects and activities. There will be experienced Lions available to provide guidance and information and to answer any questions that are put to them.

Our guest speakers include: - Former AFL player Nathan Burke - Past International Director Lion Tony Benbow

- Raconteur and popular storyteller Des Tobin - Peter Moran from Angel Flight Australia

They promise to be highly informative and entertaining and will be available for attendees to meet afterwards. We will also have a number of other onstage presentations where we showcase our achievements and inform everyone.

District Elections will be held on Saturday morning and the District Memorial Service will be at 9.30am on Sunday. Please; if you have anyone from your Club that has passed away in the last year, arrange for a Club representative and/or any of their family members to attend; this is where Lions show their respect for fellow members of our District.

The Saturday Night Dinner Dance looks like being loads of fun; even if you don’t dance, come along and mix socially over a nice meal. The venue is right on the waters’ edge, with views of the Bay all around; bus transport is available where required. Dress up, or dress down, it’s up to you! But a fun night is guaranteed when we get a good turnout, so do yourself a favour and be there.

Next month I’ll bring you news of changes across Lions Australia. Know more, Grow more; Succeed and Enjoy more

The ‘2019-2020 New Voices Initiative’ promotes gender parity and diversity and seeks to increase the number of women, young

adults and underrepresented populations within our association. It features a diverse group of Lions who strive for excellence in one of four areas: Service, Membership, Leadership, and Marketing.

Some years ago Women in Lions was formed as a result of the disparity between the proportion of women in the population and women in Lions. 2016 Census – Victorian Population 50.9% women.

In addition, fewer female members held senior positions throughout Lions Clubs International. Many members misunderstood the name and thought it was discrimination against male members, so the program was renamed More Women in Lions. After a while, there was an increase in female membership and at the same time a significantly larger increase in women in senior positions.

When Gudrun Yngvadottir from Iceland was elected our first female International President, she introduced the concept of New Voices, which immediately received a positive reception world-wide. Now that the number of women in Lions has risen so much in most countries, including ours, our newly elected International President Choi from Korea has slightly modified the program.

Lions will now work towards diversity, engaging groups that we may not have approached before, men and women, young or old and from all cultures. So that Lions reflects the society we live in.

We have not succeeded so well in the past, in this endeavour, so we need our New Voices.

New Voices should: Have a good knowledge of Lions Be able to speak to groups of people Be able to communicate in many ways, especially

through Social Media

Let us help find these New Voices, who can spread the information about our fantastic activities and projects, in such a way that the groups we are looking for will want to become a part of our clubs.

New Voices within who can help our clubs be more welcoming of these diverse groups. Some figures from the 2016 Census to get you thinking.

Of Victoria's total population: 28.4% were born overseas in over 200 countries 49.1% were born overseas or born in Australia with at

least one parent born overseas 26% spoke a language other than English at home 59% followed one of more than 130 different faiths

Living with Diabetes Type 2 diabetes has been described as a modern-day epidemic, with an estimated one million or more Australians having the disease. Alarmingly, half of these people don't realise they have it because the symptoms are not obvious. Diabetes can have serious consequences if not controlled, and a healthy lifestyle is a cornerstone of treatment.

What is diabetes? Diabetes is caused by a malfunction of the hormone insuli that usually keeps blood sugar levels in check. There are two main types: Type 1, and the more common Type 2.

Type 1 diabetes Type 1 diabetes usually occurs in children and teens, causing rapid weight loss, fatigue, frequent urination and thirst. The insulin-producing cells in the pancreas are destroyed and can no longer produce insulin, causing blood sugar levels to become dangerously high. Urgent medical attention is essential to control blood sugar levels, and injected insulin is needed throughout life. The causes are not well understood but there may be a genetic component to Type 1.

Type 2 diabetes Type 2 diabetes can be described as a lifestyle disease because the risk increases with poor diet and being overweight and physically inactive, especially if there is a family history. It typically affects people after middle age. Nowadays, however, younger adults and even teenagers are being diagnosed as a result of being overweight and unfit.

Pregnancy and diabetes Gestational diabetes can occur during pregnancy. All pregnant woman are routinely tested. This diabetes goes away when the baby is born, although women who have had gestational diabetes have a higher risk of developing Type 2 later.

Consequences of diabetes Diabetes can have serious consequences if not managed well, with chronic high sugar levels damaging the large blood vessels in the heart, the smaller blood vessels in the kidneys and eyes, and the nerves and blood supply to the hands and feet. The biggest killer of people with diabetes is heart disease, with the risk of a heart attack being four times higher than usual.

Are you at risk? If you answer yes to any of the following, talk with your doctor about a test for Type 2 diabetes. Over 55 years of age Over 45 with high blood pressure Over 45 and overweight Over 45 with family members who have/had diabetes Over 45 and have had a heart attack Over 35 and of Aboriginal, Pacific Islander, Indian or

Chinese background How is diabetes treated? The good news is that although diabetes cannot be cured, making lifestyle changes goes a long way to ensuring diabetes is well controlled. Following a healthy diet and staying physically active are the first steps, no matter what else is prescribed. Unfortunately, Type 2 diabetes tends to get worse with time, and tablets to lower blood sugar are often required. ln some cases, oral medication can stop being effective and insulin injections are needed.

Can diabetes be prevented? Because diabetes takes time to develop, there is a stage at which blood sugar levels can be high, but not yet high enough to be called diabetes. These levels are called 'pre-diabetes', and an estimated 1 million Australians have pre-diabetic blood glucose levels. Pre-diabetes is a wake-up call to make a healthier lifestyle a priority. Studies show that switching to a healthy diet and an active lifestyle can prevent pre-diabetes from progressing to full blown diabetes.

Why is GI important? The GI (Glycaemic Index) is a rating of foods according to their effect on blood sugar levels. Low-GI foods have less of an impact and are a good choice for everyone, but especially people with diabetes or pre-diabetes.
