President’s Message: Lion President Don Fleming

As we near the end of February I am thankful that we have gotten through the shortest month, that at times, also seems like the longest month. The cold weather and rain make it seem like it will never end.

March has always struck me as the month of rebirth. New growth is seen, buds begin to sprout, weather begins to warm up and a feeling of enthusiasm becomes more obvious. I would hope this feeling is enjoyed by all the Lions of our club. Let’s use this period of rebirth to increase our participation in all our activities.

We just finished the Student Speaker Contest with two students competing. My thanks to Chairman Aaron Strauss and our judges and timers. Everyone seemed to have a good time.

Peninsula Council of Lions Police and Fire Awards is being held on the 15th of March. Congratulations to all the awardees. We also get to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by “wearing of the green”. Enjoy.

We are anticipating a transfer member from the Pacifica Lions Club. His name is Irving Boxerbaum. He is a Daly City resident and is very enthusiastic about Lion activities.

Keep up the good work and remember we serve.

STUDENT SPEAKER CONTEST On Monday February 6, 2019 your fellow Lions, parents,

teachers, and judges were treated to an amazing presen-

tation at this years Student Speaker Contest.

Once again, Saint Ignatius junior Samantha Magdamo did not

disappoint, Samantha delivered a well thought out speech that

made many points which were supported by evidence on what she

thought “Freedom of the Press—What does it mean.”

When asked what Samantha’s interests and hobbies were she

responded in true teen fashion—”I enjoy playing video games and

guitar.” Also Samantha is interested in graphical design, music

composition and dance. Her immediate goal is to complete high

school and improve her speaking skills.

Congratulations to Our

Peninsula Council of Lions Service Award Nominees

Daly City Police Department

On Saturday, April 28, 2018 at approximately 2120 hours Officer Matt Ciucci along with other Daly City Police Officers responded to Classic Bowl, located at 900 King Drive, Daly City on the report of an in-progress shooting. When Officer Ciucci arrived, he entered the bowling alley alone and observed a chaotic and active scene with numerous people screaming, including a male subject suffering from a gun-shot wound to his upper groin area. Officer Ciucci was unaware whether the shooter was still on scene, yet he recognized the need to assist the gunshot victim. The victim had lost a large amount of blood and appeared to be unresponsive as a result, suggesting this was an arterial injury. Officer Ciucci acted quickly and “balled up” a towel he located nearby. He applied the towel to the injury, applying pressure and packing the wound. This action reduced or stopped the loss of blood until medics arrived. The vic-tim was transported to a trauma center where he underwent numerous surgeries and remained in critical condition for weeks. Officer Ciucci’s response likely prevented the victim from expiring at the scene and it played a critical role in saving this individuals life in a tense and potentially hostile environment.

Colma Police Department

Sergeant Dawn Marchetti is Colma Police Department’s community events coordinator and

has been actively involved in a wide range of community events in the Town of Colma. In June of 2018,

Sergeant Marchetti adopted a new Youth Outreach program to develop better relationships with the

teens that live in our community. Sergeant Marchetti rolled out the program starting with introductions

to many of the police officers who were in attendance. For the first introduction, Cops & Cones (an ice

cream social) was held at the Town’s Recreation Center. The following month, Sergeant Marchetti coor-

dinated a trip to Dave and Buster’s with Colma police officers. These first two interactions with the teens

were instrumental in developing trust and open communication with the local teens. This ultimately led

to seven regularly scheduled monthly program events that included:

1. Community Service events or volunteer work at National Night Out, Coastal Cleanup and food service at the North Peninsula Food Pantry.

2. Educational Awareness events such as Impact Teen Driving, Tobacco Prevention and Drug Preven-tion.

3. Holiday Events included Halloween Teen Fright Night at Great America and during the Winter Holi-days the local teens were brought to Union Square to partake in ice skating.

Sergeant Marchetti is to be recognized for her hard work and dedication for the successful implementa-

tion of the Youth Outreach program. Her dedication has bridged the gap with the local teens in the Town

of Colma and she has been selected to receive the 2018 Lions Club Service Award for her efforts.

San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office

San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office is proud to nominate Inspector Matthew Broad for the Peninsula Council of Lions Service Award. Inspector Broad has been a police officer for over 23 years. He began his career in 1996 with the San Car-los Police Department where he primarily worked as a patrol officer. In 1999, Matt left San Carlos PD and joined the Unites States Secret Service as a Special Agent. In 2001, Matt left the federal arena and accepted a position with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office as a Deputy Sheriff. In 2005, Matt was assigned to the Rapid Enforcement Allied Computer Team (REACT) task force. It was in this assignment that he began to cut his teeth on technology based evidence and computer crimes. Ultimately, Matt be-came a Digital Forensic Examiner. He now holds over 1000 hours of combined training in preservation and analysis of digital evidence in both computer and cellular devices. In 2011, Matt established the first digital forensic lab at the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office and in that capacity he conducted hundreds of digital forensic examinations on actual cases ranging from identity theft, to sexual assault, to homi-cide. In 2015, Matt joined the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office. He was recruited for his overall in-vestigative experience and his specialized training in digital forensics. Matt made a nearly seamless tran-sition from being a Sheriff’s Sergeant to being a DA Inspector. One of his first tasks was to help with the development of the first Digital Forensic Examination Lab at the District Attorney’s Office. Over the last three years, Matt continued to improve the Digital Forensic Examination Lab while maintaining a case-load of general criminal investigations. His investigations during these years included everything from elder abuse, to stalking, OIS cases, jury tampering and homicide. In 2018, Matt’s work continued as he took on the additional responsibility of writing grant requests to better obtain much needed funding to support the forensic lab. For 2018, Inspector Boyd conducted over 100 cellular phone downloads and fo-rensic analyses and testified as an expert in cell tower mapping and social media a number of times. In late 2018, Matt was recognized for his work on a case that received recognition from the federal gov-ernment. The case was originally brought to Matt’s attention when he was tasked with the execution of a search warrant and analysis of digital evidence (computers) belonging to a suspect accused of torturing animals. In his forensic analysis of the computers, he identified what he believed might be threatening Islamic Extremist rhetoric. He forwarded this intelligence information to the Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) who opened an investigation and subsequently initiated surveillance on the subject. Ultimately, the subject of the investigation committed suicide but the JTTF investigation revealed that he was likely planning some sort of mass casualty attack in San Mateo County. Matt was formally recognized for his proactive work in a Washington DC ceremony. In 2018, Matt got a new partner to train. Not to train in digital forensics, but rather to train as a facility dog. “Clover”, as many here in the county already know, is a four year old Labrador who is trained as “companion dog” for service in the courts and with victims of crimes. Matt’s work with Clover has been a resounding success. In the last part of 2018, Matt and Clover were called upon in nearly two dozen in-stances to provide emotional support to these victims and witnesses. In several of these instances, Clover appeared in court (witness stand) providing emotional support for these victims as they provided testi-mony.

The San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office is honored to nominate Inspector Matt Broad for the Peninsula Council of Lions Service Award for his distinguished and exemplary service to our community.

Daly City Host Lions Recycling Opportunities

Don Riker Recycling Fund—Bring your cans and bottles to the second meeting each month or contact Lion Ed Dollard to arrange pick up. Turn in at your local recycling center and donate the money to the fund.

Bread Tags for Wheelchairs— Don’t throw the little plastic tag from your bread bags away – bring them to Lion Secretary Denise Kelly. The Leos in District 4-C4 are collecting them for Danielle Cares for Chairs (an organization recycling bread tags for the purchase of wheelchairs).

Cancelled Stamps for Easter Seals—Cut the stamps off the envelope(s) and please make sure to include the postmark. Bring the stamps to any club meet-ing and we will send them to Easter Seals. Easter Seals makes lots of money selling them to philatelists worldwide.

Pull Tabs—Before you recycle your beverage can, remove the pull tab. Bring the pull tabs to any club meeting or event. Tabs will be forwarded to Fresno Host Lions Club for Ronald MacDonald House.

Empty Ink Jet Cartridges—Bring them to any club meeting or event. Let Lion Secretary Denise Kelly know which Lions organization you are donating to (Student Speaker Foundation, Lions Veterans Charities, etc.) and they will be forwarded.

Vehicle Donations—Contact Lion Ed Dollard to donate your unwanted vehicle. This is joint project with St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Keys for Sight—Bring your old keys to any club meeting and they will be recycled for our White Cane Fund.

Johnny’s Speech

When Little Johnny was about to graduate from high school, he was asked to give a speech to his fellow graduating classmates. To avoid getting off track or saying something inappropriate, as he was known for, he had index cards with his speech on them in his hand.

He got on the stage, took a look at the first index card, then at his classmates and began his speech. “Fellow graduates, I want to talk about my mother and the wonderful influence she has had on my life,” he told the audience. “She is a shining example of parenthood, and I love her more than words could ever do justice.”

At this point he seemed to struggle for words. After a pause, he looked up with a sly grin and said, “Sorry, but it’s really hard to read my mother’s handwriting.”

Scared of the Dark

A little boy was afraid of the dark. One night his mother told him to go out to the back porch and bring her the broom.

The little boy turned to his mother and said, “Mama, I don’t want to go out there. It’s dark.”

The mother smiled reassuringly at her son. “You don’t have to be afraid of the dark,” she explained. “Jesus is out there. He’ll look after you and protect you.”

The little boy looked at his mother real hard and asked, “Are you sure he’s out there?”

“Yes, I’m sure. He is everywhere, and he is always ready to help you when you need him,” she said.

The little boy thought about that for a minute and then went to the back door and cracked it a little. Peering out into the darkness, he called, “Jesus? If you’re out there, would you please hand me the broom?”

Football Fan

While watching a football game, two friends are

talking during a commercial.

One guy says, “My wife said I am obsessed with

football and put it before our marriage.”

The other guy says, “Oh, she’s exaggerating.”

First guy replies, “I thought so, too. If I was

putting football before our marriage, would I

take her out to a really nice celebration of our

third season together last week?”
