As we move into 2011, with copper prices at$8000 per tonne and predictions of over$9000 for the coming year, it has to be askedif the copper industry is having it too good.

l Is investor activity now driving prices and pricedriving supply and demand, instead of the otherway round?

lWill substitution come back with a vengeance inthe next year or two if prices stay high – and moreimportantly – volatile?

lWhat do end-users of the metal have to say aboutreal consumption prospects?

l Can we assume that copper usage is going tocontinue growing in all regions and applications?

l And are the miners simply riding the crest of thewave with little thought to the longer-term health ofthe industry?

lWhere does this leave the smelting, refining andfabricating segment – historically a less profitablebusiness? Is it benefiting to the same degree? Canrecycling fill the gap and also help margins?

All these are issues that will come under themicroscope at Metal Bulletin Events’ 24thInternational Copper Conference – the key forumfor debate involving all segments of the industry chainfrom all parts of the globe. In 2011 the event movesto March – to give an early insight into marketstrength as we embark on the year – and to Istanbul,a beautiful, bustling and historic city at the heart of agrowing copper processing and consuming region.

Session highlights helping youformulate strategies to remaincompetitive will include:l The rise of derivatives and the advent of ETFs – good or bad for copper?

lWhere are the mines of tomorrow, who will developthem and how will they be financed?

l Can greater consolidation make for better strategic planning?

l Economic recovery and copper: how much copperdemand is actually for physical consumption?

l Substitution rears its head: is demand destructionon the horizon?

lWhat can smelters and refineries do to maintainand improve margins?

lWhere does scrap fit in the flow charts and balance sheets?

lWhat must the downstream segment do to meetcustomers’ needs and remain profitable?

l Is the prospect of protectionism looming?

l The emerging market effect: what prospects forChina, India, Latin America, the Middle East and Asia.

“You managed to attract some veryprestigious speakers whose opinions arerelevant and informed.”Connor Sexton, Alfred H Knight International

“The conference was good, solid, sharp.”Carlos Rodriguez, Institute of Chilean Mining Engineers
