What is Linked Data
A method of publishing structured data so that it can be interlinked and become more useful.
Extends HTTP, RDF, AND URIs to share information in a way that can be read automatically by computers
Enables data from different sources to be connected and queried.
Four Principles of Linked Data
1. Use URIs to name things2. Use HTTP URIs so that people can look up
those names3. When someone looks up a URI, provide
useful information, using the standards (RDF, SPARQL)
4. Include links to other URIs, so that they can discover more things.
Datasets
CKAN – registry of open data and content packages by the Open Knowledge Foundation
DBpedia – dataset containing extracted data from Wikipedia
GeoNames – provides RDF descriptions of more than 7,500,00 geographical features.
FOAF – a dataset describing persons, their properties and relationships
Example
5 Star Linked Data
Data is accessible on the webYou can look, print, and share it
Everything that 1 star data can doAble to process it with proprietary softwareExport into another format
Same as 2Now we can manipulate the data without
being confined to any particular software
Same as 3It’s now in the web.All data items have a URIYou can link it from any other place.
Same as 4.Data is now discoverableDiscover more related dataIncrease the value of the data
In Conclusion
Linked Data is a method of linking data on the web to make it more accessible for everyone, and to make discovering new things easier.
