Fairy Tale #8 • Lily and the Lion
Lily and the Lion !Hi and welcome to the Mixed-Media assignment of Fairy Tale #8, “Lily and the Lion,” by
the Brothers Grimm.
Your assignment this time is broken into two parts (and two videos).
It’s best to do the first part before moving on to watch the second video assignment, just
so you can retain a certain freeness in the first assignment.
Let’s Begin!

!Assignment #1
Color the First Half of Your Dummy
This part of your assignment is simple and straightforward: Roughly divide your dummy
book in half and color the first half in, using any media you like.
How to Approach ItIf your book is like mine, there are many pages that turned out not so great. This is
wonderful, because now you can continue working in the book with a less precious
mindset. This time we will speed up and be adventurous and bold in the colors we
choose, where we choose to place them, etc.
MediaPlease use any media that feels fun and comfortable for you: watercolors, acrylics, color
pencils, pastels, markers, crayons, collage… or, try all of them! In my book I started with
markers, colored pencils and crayons, then tried some pastels and watercolor. This is the
time to experiment with different media and different combinations of media.

!Make a “Key”While coloring, make little lines with the media you used that particular page. We will
refer to these in the second half of the assignment.
Things to TryTry using several different colors to fill in faces. Try coloring everything BUT your
drawings. Try adding patterns and designs to backgrounds. Try anything that comes to
mind as you turn each page. Have fun with it!
And don’t worry that you get some really ugly pages… honestly, not all pages will be
successful… just see the following pages!

!Assignment #2
Color the Second Half of Your Dummy
This part of your assignment is also simple and straightforward: Color the second half of
your dummy.
But this time, you will choose a color palette of 8 or so colors and limit your media and
colors. Here’s how to do it:

CHOOSING A COLOR PALETTE
________________Step 1Go through your colored book and pick out colors you like. If you are like me, there
were many disasters while you were experimenting, but you are bound to find colors
that you do like.
Using your little “key” from Assignment #1 to guide you, recreate about 20-25 colors
that you like that you created in the first half of the book.

Fairy Tale #8 • Lily and the Lion !________________Step 2Make “Color Chips”
Cut out your swatches to make little “paint chips.” On the back, make color notes (a
“key”).

Fairy Tale #8 • Lily and the Lion !________________Step 3Document Color Combinations
Start rearranging your Color Chips in different combinations and take photos of each
combination. Once you have 10-12 combinations to choose from, scroll through and
pick the one that speaks to you the most.

Fairy Tale #8 • Lily and the Lion !________________Step 4Gather Media
Use the keys on the back of the Color Chips to help you separate out the media you used
to create those colors.
!12
Fairy Tale #8 • Lily and the Lion !________________Step 5Color with Limited Media/Colors
Now, color the second half of your dummy book, using only the media that you used to
create the colors from the color palette that you picked.
Be adventurous in your coloring… it’s still a rough draft after all… but stick to your
limited palette. See how many different ways you can combine your limited colors, color
in trees pink if that’s all you have, etc.
Have fun, and in 10 days I’ll give you one last assignment for this fairy tale.
Have a great 10 days!
