� A lighting control system consists of a device thatcontrols electric lighting and devices, alone or aspart of a daylight harvesting system, for a public,commercial, or residential building or property, orthe theater.

� Lighting control systems are used for working,aesthetic, and security illumination for interior,exterior, and landscape lighting, and theaterstage lighting productions.

They are often part of sustainable architectureand lighting design for integrated green buildingenergy conservation programs.

Lighting

� Lighting can be turned on, off, or dimmed with a

building automation or lighting control system basedon time of day, or on occupancy sensors, photosensorsand timers

� One typical example is to turn the lights in a space onfor a half hour since the last motion was sensed. A 

photocell placed outside a building can sense darkness,and the time of day, and modulate lights in outeroffices and the parking lot.

� Lighting is also a good candidate for Demand response,

with many control systems providing the ability to dim(or turn off) lights to take advantage of DR incentivesand savings. if occupancy sensors are present they canalso be used as burglar alarms

How it differs from the conventional

lighting control system

Conventional lighting control systems often controlequipment in a single room or over a limitedarea, because they are centralized controlsystems

-all controlled circuits must be wired to asingle control panel

where as modern building automation systems usedistributed control systems

their computing hardware and software aredistributed as a network that comprises microprocessor- based control modules and standardpersonal computers(pcs)

� The control modules use direct digital control

to communicate with each other and acttogether as an intelligent whole.

� DDC modules are miniature computers .Each

one informs the net work about the status of 

the device to which it is connected, and each

one can be programmed to respond to direct

commands from other modules or to a change

in status of any other device on the network.

Schedules

- Accounts to much of the energy savings by Bms

- The lighting in a building can be programmed so

only occupied spaces are lighted during the

evening or at night

- Different schedules can be programmed for

individual circuits or groups of circuits (called

zones)

- Some systems automatically adjust a lightingzones schedule to account for seasonal variations

in the availability of day light.

Manual controls

� The availability of manual controls often is a key

factor in occupant acceptance of a new lightingsystem.

� Manual controls often increase productivity byproviding a means by which occupants can

optimise their work environment to theirchanging needs.

� Control pads with multiple programmablebuttons, multi function lcd panels, hand heldremote controls

� PC s with access to the control network canperform advanced functioms, such as adjustingthe lighting when a particular application islaunched and, if equipped with voice recognition

capability, voice activated control.

� Occupancy sensors

An important benefit of controlling lighting with a

building automation system is that lightingsystem can share information with other buildingsystems

A building automation can be programmed to

respond to a signal from an occupancy sensor bydimming lights rather than switching them off only or by dimming them at first and thenswitching them off only if the space remains

unoccupied for an extended period of time, tominimise the likelihood that occupants wil be leftin total darkness.

Lighting System Concepts� A scene is a predetermined light level for a

zone or group of lights. The lights in a scene

may be all the lights in a room, or all the

controlled lights in the house depending on

how the scene is set up.� A scene typically represents a combination of 

light levels associated with an activity.

�"dinner" may be defined for all the lights inthe living room and dining room such that the

dining room lights are at 100% brightness and

the living room ceiling lights are at 20% and

the livin room lam s are at 40%.

� Scenes may also be associated with the state

of another subsystem in the house such as the

security system. Outputs from any device

(thermostat, security alarm, driveway sensor,

etc.) can be used to trigger a lighting scene.

system.

� An automated lighting system provides the followingbenefits:

Timed control of all lights. The lighting systemcalculates sunrise and sunset for each day based onyour city, and even takes into account Daylight SavingsTime.

� Outside lights turn on at dusk

� Outside lights turn off at preset times or dawn

� When you leave during the day and arm your securitysystem to AWAY mode, all inside lights turn off 

If you leave during the evening then most lights turnoff, but key lights are left on in order to simulate alived-in look
