    Before you watch

Play Pictionary : Introduce the word twins and show

the students the first page of the book. Explain that

the story is about a pair of twins moving into a

new house with a new bedroom. Ask the studentsto think of different furniture and toys that children

have got in their bedrooms. Then divide the class

into two teams. Start to slowly draw a toy or item

of furniture on the board and ask the students to

guess what it is. Award a point to the team of the

first student to guess. Repeat with other words.

    While you watch

Stop and check students’ comprehension at different

    points:

Ask: What are the twins’ names?  (Mike and Spike),

Have the twins got a cat or a dog? (a dog), Have the

twins got a sister? (yes), Can the carpet fly? (yes), Canthe carpet talk? (no), What’s under the carpet? (a note),

How many wishes have the twins got? (three).

Ask: What colour is Peter’s carpet?  (black, white

and orange), What does Peter do?  (he pushes other

children), What happens to Peter?  (he falls into the

snow),  Do the twins win the race?  (yes), What’s the

     prize? (gold medals).

    After you watch

Ask the students to think of places to visit on a magic

carpet (a volcano, the moon, a zoo and so on). Give

out white paper and tell each student to draw a

picture of themselves and a friend on a magic carpetwith a picture of a place they’d like to visit. Write this

model caption on the board and ask the students to

copy and complete it next to their picture:

I’m on a magic carpet with my friend   __________.

    We’re going to ____________.

    Using the worksheets

    Worksheet 1

1 Colour the correct letters and write.

Draw a picture of a carpet on the board and copy

    the letter grid:

    c a s r p o e t

Point to the picture, ask What’s this?, elicit a carpet.

Ask How do you spell carpet? and lightly shade

the letters as the students say them. Then write

the word on the lines. Tell the students to colour

the correct letters in each word and then write the

word on the lines. Tell them to leave other letters

    blank.

    Worksheet 2

1 Cut out the children and stick them to their

    carpets. Read and circle.

Tell the class to look at the carpets and the

characters and try to remember whose carpet is

whose. Hold up the worksheet and point to the

first carpet, ask Is this the girls’ carpet? (no), Is this

Peter’s carpet? (yes). Repeat with the other carpets.

Then instruct the students to cut out the four pictures

and stick each character on the correct carpet.

Write sentence 1 on the board: His name is David / Peter. Invite a volunteer to come and circle the

correct name and read out the sentence. Tell the

class to circle the correct option in the remaining

    sentences.

    Worksheet 3

1 Look and write the speech bubbles.

Hold up the worksheet, point to each character

in turn and invite the class to tell you something

about each one. Encourage them to use English

but allow them to use some L1 at this point. Write

the first sentence from the box on the board: We’re

the winners! Read out the sentence and raise your

arms to celebrate. Ask the class to tell you who says

the sentence (the twins) and which picture they say

it in. Instruct the students to complete the characters’

speech bubbles with sentences from the box.

    Extension

Write Three wishes  on the board and ask the

students to remember the twins’ three wishes (to

play a trick on their sister, to go to a magic carpet

race, to go home). Ask the class to suggest wishes

they would like to make. Ask each student to thinkof a wish and draw a picture of it. Write this model

sentence on the board and ask the class to copy

and complete it with your help: This is my wish.

    Before you read

Write Toys on the board and draw or point to different

toys in the classroom to explain the meaning. Invite

children to say different toy words and write them on

the board. Point to each toy word in turn and ask the

children: Have you got a (kite)?  Children raise their handif they have.

    While you read

Stop the story at different points and invite the children

to predict what might happen next. Encourage them

to use English as much as possible. Accept all their

answers, as the idea is for them to think freely about

    what might happen:

Page 6: Ask the children to predict what Lucy is going

    to do with the bear.

Page 11: Ask the children to predict what Lucy’s idea is.

Page 17: Ask the children to predict what’s going tohappen to the house.

    After you read

Act out the events of a page and invite the students

to quickly look through the book to find the page.

For example, say Wash the bear  and mime being Lucy

giving Smellybear a bath (page 12) or say Oh no, it’s

raining. Let’s go to the café!  and mime running in the

rain (page 3). Invite students to have a turn too.

    Using the worksheets

    Worksheet 1

1 Find the differences and write A or B.

Explain to the class that there are two pictures of

Lucy’s bedroom but that there are some differencesbetween the pictures. Write the first sentence on

the board: There are four books. Ask the students to

look at pictures A and B and say which picture has

got four books (A). Then ask the children to look at

the other sentences and write which picture each

    sentence describes.

    Worksheet 2

1 Match Smellybear to the speech bubbles and find

    the page.

Ask the children to look at the fourth picture of

Smellybear. Say He isn’t happy  and shake your head.

Point to the soap, elicit the word and ask Does

Smellybear like soap?  Then, ask the children to find

the correct speech bubble for Smellybear: I don’t

like soap. Draw a line to match the first picture to it.

Next, ask the children to find the page showing

Smellybear having a bath in the book (page 12) and

match the speech bubble to it.

    Worksheet 3

1 Look at the story, draw hands on the clocks and

    write the time.

Review telling the time with a toy clock or draw

a clock on the board (focus on o’clock, half past,

    quarter past and quarter to).

Invite the children to look at the first clock and read

out the sentence. Get the children to look at the

book and find the corresponding page (page 3), ask

What’s the time?  and elicit the answer: It’s half past 3.

Tell the children to draw hands on the clock to show

the time and write the time under each clock.

Note: if your children find the written times difficult,

then write them on the board as a model for the

    children to copy.

    Extension

Make shape pictures of teddy bears: give out plastic

circles, squares, triangles and rectangles of different

sizes. Tell the children to draw round them on colouredpaper, cut them out and put the shapes together to

make a picture of a teddy bear.

Do a survey of favourite toys in the class: hand out

paper and ask each child to draw and label their

favourite toy. Display the pictures on a bar chart to

show the most popular toy in the class.
