COMMUNITY HEALTH 2018 “Since 1934, Liga has been dedicated to improving the health & well-being of the underserved people

of Sinaloa, México by providing free health care & education”

Driven off their lands by the Spanish in the 15th century, the indigenous Mayo, Yaqui and Tarahumara tribes of northern Sinaloa have

adapted and survived, although not without deprivation and discrimination.

Liga Community Health is focused on disease prevention, health education and improvement of well-being of these rural indigenous, or “the forgotten people.” We do that by providing means to clean water through our Biosand filter project, regular medical

team visits, and health education. Our goal is to work cooperatively with these groups, sharing our expertise to further their autonomy.

The Water Project is growing rapidly from a test phase of 22 working filters in 2017 to a network of 925 filters by the end of 2018, and over 1,500 working filters by 2019.

The project requires a strong commitment to education and maintenance by the local people, and the cooperation of organizations such as Rotary International the Lions Club.

Community Health Mission: To improve the health of the Sinaloa people through intervention and prevention with a focus on the

underserved Mayo population in rural villages within 50 km of El Fuerte and San Blas clinics. We do that by assisting with intake screening and health education seminars at clinic, developing services for women, and distributing health education, medical teams and clean water to the villages.

LIGA CLEAN WATER PROJECT

Our 2020 goal is to eliminate water-borne disease in our area by

providing Biosand filters to all communities in our catchment area.

As of January 2018, 22 filters have been successfully installed in

eight communities within 45km of El Fuerte.

THE FIRST CONCRETE FILTERS

Steel mold extraction

Celebrating our first concrete filter

Lonnie’s perfect filter. This can now be painted and taken to the villages.

Steel molds are constructed to CAWST specs ($400

each). Concrete molds are poured and cured for 24

hours. When extracted, the concrete filter will be filled

with sand and gravel and serviceable for up to 30 years.

Molds are re-used and can produce up to 7 filters per

day each. We currently have three steel molds.

Like it?

Without a central organizing space to store and build

filters, train volunteers, and maintain supplies, we

can’t expand.

It’s a bit of a fixer-upper … but donated by long-time

volunteer Olivia Urias and located in the center of

town!

We’ll repair and retain use in perpetuity. Estimates for

plumbing, electrical repairs and overhang are $8,560.

The building will be named:

The Clean Water Project is a cooperative effort to establish safe water for the tens of thousands of people in rural northern Sinaloa, México through the installation of Biosand filters in all villages.

The people of rural Sinaloa are the indigenous Mayo, Yaqui and Tarahumara people whose only source of water is the contaminated Rio Fuerte.

Water-borne disease rate is high, children are ill and cannot attend school. The incidence of Hepatitis A, and disorders resulting from e. coli contamination are high.

There is a current humanitarian crisis involving the Tarahumara of the Sierre Madre who have been driven from their homes by drug violence in the Copper Canyon area. Approximately 150 families have fled to our region of Sinaloa without food, shelter, clothing or access to clean water. They are not registered Mexican citizens and thus have no access to government aid.

The objectives of this project are to treat all communities within a 100km range of El Fuerte, Sinaloa, ranging from the north in Choix, Sinaloa to Los Mochis in the south, the area of highest indigenous concentration. We estimate that the project will provide clean water for over 100,000 people. The project involves teaching the local people to test their own water and water sanitation training. We have developed a train-the-trainer system of modules in health, hygiene and water sanitation which will be spread throughout the region along with the installation of filtration.
