March 4-5, 2014 | Hyatt Regency Orange County3

Welcome FROM CARYN SIEBERT, CHAIRPERSON

Last year over 900 of us celebrated the Silver Anniversary of the Combined Claims Conference. Now it’s time to blast off and welcome you all as you land in Orange County – the new and exciting venue for this conference for the next few years.

While many conferences have experienced decreased attendance and a drop in exhibitors, this year’s conference has once again bucked the trend. I am proud to say that all systems are a go at the CCC – we have a great program, great exhibitors, great venue and great committee. This ignites our engine and results in a great educational conference, networking and fun (especially via the golf tournament and Casino Night).

The multi-year deal we struck with the Hyatt here in Orange County should allow us to keep attendance and exhibitor fees the same for the next few years. Carl Warren & Company is already looking ahead and proud to be the presenting sponsor for the conference for March 10-11, 2015, so save the date. Thanks to the sponsors of the Bill King Memorial Golf Tournament, we expect to be able to offer even more scholarships to the 2015 Combined Claims Conference. American Technologies (ATI) will be the presenting sponsor of the 2015 golf tournament. The Claims Education Panel, Fire Cause Analysis and Impact General will be assuring that continuing education credits are available for attendees.

Please thank our sponsors and exhibitors for making this event possible. Enjoy meeting and networking with the bright people in the industry who are here. Have a blast interacting with experienced speakers and colleagues so you win all the way around and your investment of time and money will pay dividends. And last, but not least, consider volunteering to be a speaker next year or submitting your name for the planning committee.

We hope you’ll plan in advance and clear the calendar to invest in your future and gain a competitive advantage over others when we gather at the spectacular Hyatt from March 10-11, 2015, Master Our Careers!

Caryn Siebert, J.D., is President and CEO of Carl Warren & Company, an award winning employee-owned third party claims administrator providing “gold level” claim service nationwide to hundreds of public entities, Fortune 500 companies, various businesses and insurance companies since 1944. She is Chair of the CCC and has presented at several conferences including CLM, DRI, PRIMA, PARMA, NRRDA and NASP. Carl Warren & Company was named 2013 National ESOP Company of the Year; 2012 California/Western States Company of the Year; one of the “Best Companies to Work For” by Business Insurance in October 2010; and Orange County Metro Magazine and the Orange County Register in July 2009 and 2010.

Complex or large exposure fraudulent claims mean significant expense, both in terms of indemnity dollars and costs as well as the greater impact on the business of insurance. Using examples that run the gamut of claims, including staged accident rings, sophisticated workers’ compensation scams, major property loss cases and padded catastrophe claims, an experienced panel of speakers-an SIU Director, an NICB agent, an engineer and a lawyer-will discuss and analyze the true cost of fraud, from investigation through resolution, and beyond.Speakers: Steve Jirsa, Managing Engineer, Exponent, Inc. Track 1 – PropertyGarden 1 - 3Water Loss Mitigation: What to Expect and Why

Water loss claims, whether from plumbing breaks, overflows or rain are the most common claims handled by property adjusters in California. Even so, there remain misconceptions about what is reasonable and necessary when a qualified water loss mitigation company is called out on a claim. This often leads to questions about billing that can leave the property owner in a difficult situation. This session will address the key requirements as laid out by the IICRC and what the claims adjuster should expect to see when reviewing the work and invoice from a qualified mitigation company. This course is designed for beginning to intermediate level adjusters. Experience adjusters may also benefit from getting a refresher on IICRC requirements.Speakers: Jeff Taxier, SCLA, BA, Education and Training Manager, American Technologies, Inc. Jeff Robitaille, Property Claims Branch Supervisor, Mercury Insurance Services, LLC

Track 2 - LiabilityRoyal E – FThe Use and Admissibility of Black Boxes in Assessing the Severity of Low Speed Accidents

Currently, accident reconstruction investigators can download information from most late model GM, Ford, Chrysler and Toyota vehicles using a publicly available, albeit specialized, electronic tool. NHTSA has introduced new rules (49 CFR 563) to standardize the data recorded by “black boxes” and the access to such data. The new rules are scheduled to apply to every model year 2013 vehicle sold in the US and also require the manufacturers to make the necessary access that can be used to assess the minimal damage case. The goal of this presentation is to educate attendees on the role of information contained in the so-called “black boxes” found in motor vehicles. Attendees will learn about the type and volatility of data collected by vehicle manufacturers and the accuracy as it relates to assessing the severity of a collision. Published research will be cited and case studies will be presented. The legal admissibility of the data will also be discussed along with the foundational requirements. Speakers: David J.
