Year 4 – Spring Block 4 – Suffixes – Using Suffixes

About This Resource:

This PowerPoint has been designed to support your teaching of this small step. It includes a starter activity and an

example of each question from the Varied Fluency and Application and Reasoning resources also provided in this

pack. You can choose to work through all examples provided or a selection of them depending on the needs of

your class.

National Curriculum Objectives:

English Year 4: Spell words with endings sounding like /ʒə/ or /tʃə/, /ʒən/ and /ʃən/ spelt –tion,–sion, –ssion, –cian

English Year 4: Spell using the suffixes –ation, –ous and –ly

English Year 4: Add suffixes beginning with vowel letters to words of more than one syllable

English Year 4: Use further prefixes and suffixes and understand how to add them - see English appendix

Year 4 – Spring Block 4 – Suffixes – Using Suffixes

Notes and Guidance:

• Children have covered word families, root words and suffixes in the previous steps.

• In this optional step, they will use all suffixes for Year 4. These include the suffixes from the previous steps, in

addition to words ending in ‘-ly’ or ‘-ous’, and suffixes beginning with vowel letters added to words of more

than one syllable.

Focused Questions

• Change the words by adding the correct suffix (some incorrect suffixes added to words, or words without

suffixes).
