Dear Council Partners and Friends,

A sixteenth century reformer was reflecting on the nature of the Christian life when he wrote:

“We are not now what we shall be, but we are on the way. The process is not yet finished, but it is actively going on. This is not the goal but it is the right road.” –Martin Luther

These are fitting words for the Council of Churches of the Ozarks as we turn a page of history and welcome a new year, a new decade, and a new beginning. It is a strategic time for people of faith to be on our way, pursuing the priorities of Jesus Christ together.

Thank you for the many messages of encouragement and support! I’m genuinely humbled and excited about serving the Council of Churches as your fourth executive director in 40 years. Few nonprofit organizations anywhere have served their community with such distinction, stability and effectiveness. I

count it a personal honor and sacred trust to serve our organization, and I invite you to share with me your best thoughts, ideas and suggestions.

For me, our mission is an inspiring one, guiding us on a journey in pursuit of the priorities of Jesus Christ. Through nine specialized service agencies, we are working each day “to improve the quality of life in our region.” Whenever the weak are strengthened, whenever the poor are restored, whenever the sick experience a caring touch, the quality of life is improved for all, and our world looks more like the Kingdom Jesus came to establish. Moreover, I believe people who join their faith with others in compassionate action experience joy in “doing together what can best be done together.” I envision the Council of Churches as that creative, safe place in our community where the common ground of service leads to the higher ground of unity, unity that Jesus asks his Father to give to us in John 17:21-23.

Thank you for joining your faith with compassionate action through the Council of Churches of the Ozarks. I’m looking forward to the journey before us, because we’re on the right road as we pursue the priorities of Jesus together!

2009 – A Record Breaking YearAmbassadors for Children broke several program service records in 2009 and expects a continued increase in 2010.

r The Kid’s Clothes Closet: 427 foster children served (a 63% increase)

r The Kid’s Clothes Closet: 593 appointments (a 60% increase)

r Project Self-Esteem: 52 foster children served (a 160% increase)

r Project Self-Esteem: 77 requests (a 141% increase) and

r Adopt-a-Caseworker: 345 children served in the first program year.

Adopt-a-Caseworker Success Story

When one of our Partner Groups learned from their “adopted” Caseworker about a teenage girl who didn’t have any appropriate clothing to wear to a special after school program, they acted quickly. They purchased several new shirts and pants for her so she could attend the program and feel good about doing so. Because of these small items (in addition to the new clothing provided by the Kid’s Closet), this girl now has the opportunity to improve her social and life skills alongside her peers. This is an opportunity that would have easily been missed without the generosity of one of our Adopt-a-Caseworker Partner groups. This same Partner Group also makes personalized birthday cakes for all the foster children on their “adopted” Caseworker’s caseload!

Director Sondra Uzzell tells this story, “While straightening the Kid’s Closet I met a husband and wife who have been foster parents for 8 years and consistently visit the Kid’s Closet 2x/year. They are a therapeutic foster home, so they foster parent children with special behavioral and developmental needs that traditional foster homes usually are not equipped to handle. The foster parents currently have 3 young boys in their home, 2 of which are siblings. While choosing clothing for one of the boys, the foster mom said, “I wish you could see the boys when they get their new clothes. You’d think it was Christmas morning – they are so excited and it really means so much to them.”

2009 Christmas Distributions

Bless Thousands Over 2,622 Children

Received Gifts

Here is a sample of the “thank you” letters written by Crosslines clients who were served at the Christmas Toystore. A special thanks to the National Guard Armory for the use of their facility (for the 3rd year!). Thanks to the generosity of our community, Crosslines was able to provide very special holiday memories for many families this past holiday season. Thank you for being our partner in this important ministry!

Thank you to Fazoli’s for providing a hot lunch for the many volunteers working the Thanksgiving and Christmas

distributions (for the 11th year!)

Because there could come a time…when any one of us could use a little help.

Providing Bikes to Children for Over 25 Years!by Pam Copling Thank You!

The Feinstein $1 Million Challenge for 2010 “I was hungry and you gave me something to eat. . .”For the 13th year, the Feinstein Foundation will divide $1 million among agencies like Crosslines that are fighting hunger! The Feinstein $1 Million Challenge will add funds to your gift to Crosslines at a time when a record number of families are seeking assistance. I encourage you to give generously during March and April to qualify for this challenge. Thank you! - Pam Copling

Carlisle Power Transmission Products (formerly Dayco Products) has been an integral part of the Crosslines Toystore for over 25 years. What started as some employees fixing up used bikes for the Toystore has become a major endeavor for the Carlisle employees and company. Now the majority of bicycles given out at the Toystore are newly purchased. In addition, the Carlisle program provides

tricycles, wagons, boom boxes, stereos and other special gifts.

To make distribution fair, each family gets the chance to draw a ticket to win one of these large items.

The first volunteer coordinator, Junior Henry,

received a Gift of Time award for the countless hours he put into the program. After his retirement, Ron Ussery filled the coordinator position and the program continued to thrive. Now, volunteer coordinator Joe Jackson is carrying on the tradition of making Christmas extra special for hundreds of children each year by presenting their parents with bicycles, stereos, wagons and other special gifts. Joe’s enthusiasm and devotion is contagious and employee support has flourished under his leadership.

We are grateful to have Carlisle continue to support their employees participation in the Crosslines Toystore. Without the Carlisle program, very few children would receive a bicycle, tricycle or any other special gift. It is only through Carlisle’s employee’s support and dedication that we are able to make these dreams come true.

Crosslines Toystore

Crosslines in ReviewIn 2009, the Crosslines food pantry continued to serve an average of 44 families each day! With help from a $20,000 grant from the Musgrave Foundation for food and generous donations from the community, Crosslines was able to supplement our Pantry Sponsors and never close the pantry early in 2009. The 2009 Community Clearinghouse added new participants, making sure donor dollars area wide are spent as wisely as possible and duplication of holiday services is avoided.

“I am a seventy-five year old handicapped lady, living on a limited social security, with no other person in my home to help make repairs.

“For the last two years I have struggled with a kitchen faucet… a tree came down on the back of my house and caused shelves

in my closet to tear out of the wall… with a fused ankle and damaged knees and a very large hernia that makes it impossible for me to get out of the bathtub… although I have a

shower in the basement of my home, the handles were stuck and I did not have the strength to turn on the water to take a shower… Also, late last fall, I locked myself out of my house and had to break the side door window…

“Mr. Gaddy (a CHS Contractor), a very pleasant and understanding man made all these repairs for me. I had felt rather depressed that I could no longer make the necessary repairs myself and could not afford to hire a person to come and make repairs for

me. I was reminded every day of how helpless I had become and how much my life and abilities had deteriorated.

Never a Dull Moment at Daybreak

Daybreak ended 2009 with many exciting activities. We attended the Brett Family Christmas show and ate lunch at the Rib Crib in Branson. The Daybreak band has also been busy. They sang Christmas carols to the clients of Adult Tendercare Center. They also entertained family and staff members who attended our Annual Client-Family Christmas dinner held on December 11th. It was a wonderful evening of entertainment, food and fellowship. Our celebrations continued with a gift exchange for the clients.

We are starting the New Year off with many fun and entertaining activities. The clients are looking forward to upcoming outings to the Art Museum, bowling, the Springfield Nature Center, and the Shrine Circus over the next few months.

Entertainment from our many volunteers, craft projects, games, and celebrations are just around the corner. We are all looking forward to a fun filled year!

You can help us with this rather massive task by visiting our new website at CCOzarks.org, clicking on the “register” button at the bottom of the homepage, and completing the registration form.

By giving just 5 minutes to the Council of Churches, you will help us to accomplish two important goals:

1.When you register at our new, secure website, you are providing your current contact information and confirming the accuracy of our records, an extremely important.hallmark of a healthy organization;

2.By allowing us to provide you with online communications via E-mail, you’ll be helping us to be better stewards, saving on postage, paper and printing, and taking positive steps toward caring for creation.

In addition to secure, personalized features that will allow you to track your online giving, our new website will feature a place for member churches to communicate about community-wide special events, ongoing ministries and news items that affect the wider community. Our new site will also feature a place to access blogs by area pastors and community leaders writing about faith, the church, and other important issues related or our life together.

Your donation toward this campaign makes YOU partners in the most successful grassroots campaign to

fight hunger of all times!

For the 13th year, Alan Shawn Feinstein will divide $1 million among agencies

like Crosslines that are fighting hunger! Why does he do this?

He says, “Because I believe each of us was put here on earth to do

what we can to help those in need”

To qualify, gifts must be made to Crosslines in March and April, 2009
