2018 ANNUAL REPORT
LIFE-CHANGINGRELATIONSHIPS
OUR DIRECTORS
LETTERS FROM:
Dear Friends,Every day, we are surrounded by the legacy of love your support makes possible. Connections are made in our Adoption Center, the road to recovery starts in our Veterinary Clinic, trust and kindness blossom in our Training & Behavior Center, second chances begin as our Transfer program’s newest arrivals are greeted with compassion, and relief is found as our Safety Net extends to support pets and guardians in need. You make so much possible for pets and the people who love them.
In 2018, HSBV’s programs and services continued to provide life-changing care for the animals at our shelter and those in our community. Our teams worked tirelessly to improve the shelter experience for the pets in our care, doing even more for each pet who arrives at our door. We continued to collaborate with our transfer partners and their evolving needs — responding to increases in requests to help animals in medical crisis and pets facing behavioral challenges. Your commitment ensures our innovative Shelter Medicine and Behavior Modification programs continue to improve lives and creatively support animals at HSBV — helping them successfully transition to new homes – or animals of our community — keeping loving bonds intact and helping families thrive again. All of these innovative programs are a part of the foundation of our community Safety Net, which is always ready to lend a helping hand to support loving relationships.
This Annual Report is a celebration of everything you made possible in 2018. Together, we are changing and saving lives. Your compassion and kindness ensures our community flourishes. Thank you for your generous support and commitment to pets and the people who love them!
In gratitude,
Kat Burns Director of Operations & Veterinary Services
Bridgette Chesne Director of Animal Sheltering & Behavior
Maggie McSchaefer Director of Strategic Initiatives
Steve Metzger VP of Finance & Administration
Jennifer Schwartz Director of Human Resources
Lindsay Scott Director of Philanthropy & Community Relations
HONORING LISA PEDERSEN'S SERVICEAfter more than 21 years at the Humane Society of Boulder Valley, including 12 years as CEO, Lisa Pedersen announced in 2018 that she would resign her position to start her own business. Lisa’s leadership drove HSBV’s innovative programs, developed our community’s next generation of animal advocates, and nationally influenced the animal welfare industry. Throughout her years of service, Lisa’s incredible dedication made second chances at love possible for so many pets and people. Her lasting legacy ensures HSBV will continue to be a beacon of kindness for those in need, when they need it most.

Dear Supporters,We are so honored to share with you the work of the Humane Society of Boulder Valley as Co-Chairs of the Board of Directors. Throughout the year, we’ve seen the incredible commitment of our staff, volunteers, donors, and community members make a lifesaving difference for animals in need and life-changing impact on their families. From early mornings at the shelter providing daily care and enrichment to the animals, to the late nights supporting events to raise the funds the animals rely on to thrive in their loving homes, HSBV and its network are always ready to build, grow, and sustain the relationships that make our community one of the best places to be a pet. It is your support that encourages new relationships to blossom and remain life-changing between pets and people.
Each year, close to 7,000 animals enter the shelter seeking comfort, food, medical care, behavioral support, or a second chance at a happy life. HSBV’s innovative foundational programs continue to advance our mission and drive the evolution of the animal welfare across the country. Through the support of our Behavior Modification program, hundreds of dogs and cats have successfully joined new families and are thriving thanks to the reward-based and force-free training techniques. Our Shelter Medicine program continues to provide intensive resources, saving lives and giving many a second chance. HSBV also provided a compassionate safety net to hundreds of pets in 2018 — ensuring animal care resources are available during personal emergencies, financial hardship or natural disasters. Our Safety Net stands at the ready to support the Boulder community, and our neighbors, during natural disasters and other animal welfare emergencies. Each interaction with staff, gentle encouragement from volunteers, and donation to their care makes this work possible. Together, our community is ensuring a bright future for the pets in Boulder, and beyond.
Your commitment to our mission inspires all of us at HSBV. Inside this report, you will find incredible reminders of what your support makes possible. I hope this report reflects for you — like it does for us — what we can achieve for so many who call Boulder Valley home. Thank you, and we look forward to all we will continue to accomplish together.
Sincerely,

LIVES SAVEDBECAUSE OF YOUR SUPPORT
Sweet Nemo is as lucky as they come, thanks to your support for the Humane Society of Boulder Valley’s Shelter Medicine
program. After becoming trapped in a crawl space, Nemo was found by City of Boulder Animal Protection. He had been
stuck there for weeks and was in critical condition when he was rescued. They rushed him to HSBV for immediate,
lifesaving care. Despite having a rough prognosis, showing signs of starvation, Nemo’s spirit hadn’t given up. It was
not an easy journey, and our expert veterinary team worked tirelessly to provide intensive supportive care, critical
vaccinations, and medications. Through their committed efforts to get him back on his feet, the team was able to
diagnose Nemo with idiopathic vestibular disease — an inner-ear condition that can cause balance and coordination
issues, circling, stumbling, and is possibly why Nemo fell into the crawl space! Our skilled veterinary team comforted
and nourished him until he regained his strength and began socializing again. Nemo's recovery continued with the
care of a dedicated foster home where he loved long snuggles, playing with toys, and sitting in the sunshine. After
a full month of receiving intensive care, Nemo has found a new, loving home in Boulder Valley where he is now
taking it easy and enjoying life, happy and healthy again! Your dedication to pets like Nemo is life-changing for
pets in need and the people who love them.
NEMO
STRENGTHENING OUR
SAFETY NET In 2018, your support allowed our Safety Net program to grow!
As the needs of our community continue to evolve, so too do our programs and services. In an effort to keep people and pets together — supporting
loving relationships and preventing animal relinquishment — our Safety Net now extends a helping hand to the seniors in our area through our Senior
Support initiative. HSBV worked collaboratively with senior living facilities, care takers, and community advocates to expand our offerings to those who are
at risk of a temporary inability to care for their pets, but rely on the love their companion animal brings to their life. Because of your dedication to happy and
healthy relationships, seniors in and around Boulder now have access to interim boarding care for their animals, subsidized veterinary and behavior support,
and discounted adoption fees for pets. Investing in these relationships ensures our community continues to thrive – sustaining our neighborhoods with love and
companionship. Thank you for making this life-changing work possible!

Sammie was looking for a lot of support and a lot of patience — and she found both at HSBV, thanks
to your generous dedication to pets in need. When she arrived, Sammie had a history of discomfort
around children and other dogs and grew anxious when alone. She would need a special family who
could provide loving care and empathize with her separation anxiety. Our Training and Behavior
team developed a customized plan to support her needs — understanding that a lot of her
reaction stemmed from her insecurity. Working with Sammie, on her terms, the team developed a
relationship built on a foundation of trust and kindness. Through their support of her choices —
removing herself when she was uncomfortable, walking away when another dog approached her,
and gently exposing her to a small bit of time left alone — our Training and Behavior team saw
drastic improvements. Sammie slowly learned to be more comfortable with sudden movements
or noises, she made some fun-loving canine friends, and through collaboration with our Shelter
Medicine program’s pharmaceutical support was able to relax when left by herself. Now,
Sammie happily lives with a hound-dog companion and her home is filled with love and joy.
Your dedication to extending compassion to the animals at HSBV ensured Sammie was met
with kindness, patience, and the resources she needed to thrive.
SAMMIE
Every day, our staff and volunteers work to build, enrich, and strengthen relationships between pets and people. From adoptions and lost and found services, to dedicating resources supporting pets and their guardians in times of hardship, healthy relationships are the inspiration for everything we do. Last year, close to 5,000 animals found loving families of their own through our adoption program. Almost 800 lost and stray animals were safely reunited with their families through our lost and found services. Fostering richer and stronger bonds with their pets, over 3,000 guardians utilized the reward-based, force-free training services of our Training and Behavior Center. Our Veterinary Clinic continued to ensure the health of over 6,000 pets, providing families with resources so their pets can live long, happy lives. Companion animals bring joy and love into the lives we share with them. Through these life-changing relationships our lives are enriched and our community thrives.
