Forum Environmental Series April 27 was Creation Care Sunday. We had a very good attendance (16) at The Forum that morning to kick off our series on environ-mental issues. Judging by this, and by the lively discussion that ensued, there is much interest in this topic. We hope you will plan to join us for the four continuing Sunday sessions through May 25, as they involve consideration of what have become the most im-portant issues of our time. At the conclusion (May 25) we will re-visit Eco-theology (with part 2) to conclude the series so we can complete our re-examination of the scriptural witness on creation, and our re-thinking of theology, with creation care in mind. May 4 – Caring for God's Creation – Practical Efforts and Education – Jaydee Hanson Jaydee Hanson is the chair of the Caretakers of God's Creation Min-istry at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church in Arlington (and secre-tary of the same denomination-wide ministry). He has worked with all committees of his church on "greening" the church’s activities and mission. He has served on the World Council of Churches Cli-mate Action Team and represented the World Council of Churches at United Nations meetings from 1989 to 2001. He will discuss Mt. Olivet's many and varied environmental and conservation pro-grams, as well as its educational program to help us understand how our activities, individually and corporately, affect the health of the planet. May 11 – Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and Food Production – Luther Markwart What are the key issues, challenges, the players, and consumers in the GMO debate? How do we feed the poor along with an expand-ing global population with fewer farmers and fewer resources? How do we care for our fragile planet, facing climate changes that threaten food production? The debate over GMOs vs. hybrid (conventional) crops vs. organic food production grows louder each day. Luther Markwart, Executive Vice President of the American Sugarbeet Growers Association, has led the biotechnology effort for his industry for almost 20 years. He will help guide us through the key issues and strategies and answer your questions.
