AFFIRMING TASK
FORCE/COMMITTEE
A lot of people wonder what the difference is between being a
"Welcoming" church and an "Affirming" Church. Affirm
United is a volunteer run program that is working for the full
inclusion of people of all sexual orientations and gender
identities in The United Church of Canada and in society and
has put together a great analysis of the difference between
these two words in a church context.
What’s the difference between being “Welcoming” and
“Affirming”?
(Found on the Afffirm United website at
http://affirmunited.ause.ca/frequently-asked-questions-about-
affirm-united-saffirmer-ensemble/)
Most congregations do their best to be welcoming, but being
affirming goes deeper and is public, intentional, and explicit,
in their commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Think “PIE”: Public, Intentional, and Explicit.
Public: An Affirming Ministry uses symbols and signs which
are echoed outside and inside the church building, in worship,
and in all other facets of church life. The broader community
should also know what it stands for; a witness to the wider
community that God’s love extends to everyone equally and
without reserve. This is still a radical message!
Intentional: An Affirming Ministry is deliberate in their
process of study, education and dialogue with members of
their faith community (both during the Affirming process and
as a piece of their ongoing work), to ensure that the history of
oppression and discrimination by the Church is both
understood and acknowledged, and that continued growth,
education, and celebration are part of its ministry.
Explicit: Affirming Ministries should explicitly indicate in
their Mission and Vision statement – and everywhere else! –
that the LGBTQ+ community is a part of and embraced in all
facets of church life. And as part of the Affirming process,
their faith community will explore and explain how to live out
that commitment.
For more great information on what being Affirming truly
means, check out some more of the Frequently Asked
Questions at Affirmunited.ause.ca/
CHILDREN’S MINISTRY
Outdoor Sunday School
Our summer children’s program began on June 12th in the
Botsford side yard.
Outdoor Sunday School Emmanuel is
offering an Outdoor Sunday School
Program. The Sunday School group will
assemble inside and then head out to the
"Botsford Yard" on the east side of the
building. We will start each session with
a story.
The remainder of the lesson will be spent celebrating the
bounty of God's earth as we tend Emmanuel's
vegetable garden plots. In these plots we aim to grow
organic produce for Emmanuel community events.
While we feed, water, tend and harvest our vegetables,
we will be studying organic growing principles such as
companion planting, composting, rainwater irrigation
and seed saving.
Emmanuel will host Camp Awesome
from July 4 - 8, 2016.
Friends, neighbours, grandchildren -
everyone is welcome. The camp runs from 10 am until 3 pm for
a one week period in July. We will have pre and post camp care
from 8:15 am until 5:30pm each day.
Forms are available for all children age 4 - 12. Youth entering
grade 7 and 8 are invited to continue attending Camp
Awesome and learn leadership skills. Applications for the
Emmanuel Junior Leader in training program are available on
line or on the youth board.
We will need adult support! If you are interested please speak
with Nancy Gardiner or Val Lines … send an email to
Dirt to Delicious

July 11 -14, 2016
One of Emmanuel’s cooking camps for kids is going to be in
the great outdoors again this year at Lac Le Peche! On
Monday come to Emmanuel for games and cooking the food
that we will take camping. From July 12-14 we will go canoe
camping on Lac Le Peche in Gatineau Park. Have a blast
swimming and hiking by day and singing camp songs by the
fire at night!
This camp is for our youth going into our grade 5, 6, 7 and 8
Sunday School. The camp will run Monday July 11 from
8:30am-4:30pm and from Tuesday at 8:30am to Thursday at
4:30pm. Cost: $150 (includes lunch on Monday as well as
meals and costs for camping). Head to the beauty of the
Gatineau Hills under the capable leadership of Emmanuel
leaders! For more information, please see Val Lines.
Youth at Emmanuel are an integral part of our faith
community. There are times to serve, times to learn and times
just for fun. You can come to one thing or everything. If there
is a fee and it is a challenge for you we can help support that
opportunity. All are welcome!

Welcome Back BBQ - Sunday, September 11
Join us for a BBQ after the service on September
11 as we start the new church year.
Teleos Retreat - September 11th and 12th at Galilee Center
in Arnprior
Our guest will be Barbara Hill, a First Nation Algonquin.
She will speak about her journey to better understand her
Native spirituality, her peoples’ history, and her lifelong
challenge being an Anishinabe woman. These struggles have
served to give her the strength to talk about her culture, speak
out against racism and discrimination, and educate people in
Indigenous history in Canada.
We will travel to Galilee after church on Sunday, arriving in
time for lunch. We will return home after lunch on Monday.
Throughout the retreat quiet times will be scheduled to allow
you to reflect or rest or take a walk outdoors (the setting is
lovely). Carpooling is encouraged.
For further information talk to Margaret Armstrong, Colleen
Calvert or Joan Foster-Jones. For registration forms see Joan
Foster-Jones.
Co-op Student – Emily Sams
June has been a busy month! I have had the pleasure of
volunteering with some of the incredibly dedicated employees
of Centre 507, went camping on the always fun Camp Bitobi
weekend and beefed up the Churchwatch database that
Emmanuel has recently purchased.
All of these activities have shown me just how active of a
community Emmanuel United Church really is. There always
seem to be activities for someone available. The best way to
keep people involved with church is to show them that their
presence really matters. This month Emmanuel will host Camp
Awesome and a Dirt to Delicious Camp which means a lot of
work but a lot of fun!
I have also recently started working with Norma McCord, a
retired nurse who is incredibly active in the Ottawa Presbytery
when it comes to refugee sponsorship. Having been involved
with private refugee sponsorship for decades, Norma is a very
busy woman who devotes a lot of her time to volunteer
activities in her community.
Did you know that the conflict in Syria has created more than
4.8 million refugees, making it the largest refugee crisis in
history? Emmanuel United Church has done a lot of fantastic
work when it comes to refugee sponsorship, including
organizing the Emmanuel Refugee Support Group.
For more information on how to support privately sponsored
refugees (any refugees who are not sponsored by the
government), you can visit emmanuelunited.ca or rstp.ca

learn how to save seeds from your favourite veggies to grow
again the following year!
Saturday, July 23rd, time TBD: A small, guided tour of the
Just Food farm
Wednesday, August 10th, 6:30pm: Canning workshop (we

Update on Retirement of Long-Term Revitalization Debt
We have made excellent progress in reducing the long-term
debt associated with the revitalization of the Christian
Education Building during the first five months of 2016.
At the beginning of 2016, the total was $445K. This has been
reduced by $69K as a result of monthly donations, generous
additional donations, contributions to Simplify Your
Celebrations, and Quilting to Build. As of May 31, the
remaining debt has been reduced to $376K. This is made up of
ten-year bonds ($197K), a personal loan ($100K), and amount
borrowed from Emmanuel's financial reserves ($79K).
The $3.2m cost of the 2009-2011 project was covered by a
combination of the generous bequests received in advance, by
donations and fundraising activities during the construction
phase, and by $ 1,461,000 of borrowed funds in a portfolio of
long-term debt. The original debt portfolio was made up of six
instruments: two mortgages ($500,000 and $200,000); bonds
purchased by members ofthe congregation ($414,000 in five-
year bonds, and $197,000 in ten-year bonds); a loan from
Rideau Park United Church ($50,000); and, a personal loan
from a congregant. The two mortgages, the five-year bonds,
and the Rideau Loan have been completely eliminated.
The remaining debt has been reduced to approximately 26% of
the initial total debt amount. This amount corresponds to just
12% of the total cost of the project.
Many thanks to all those who continue to steadily provide
financial support to the project. Your contributions to date and
in the future are greatly appreciated.
Graham Campbell, Debt Retirement Coordinator
Finance Committee
Calling all knitters/sewers in our
congregation -- please keep in mind
our need for donations to the knitting/sewing table for our
annual Holiday Bazaar in early November. What a great way
to spend those warm summer days! With many thanks.
HEALTH COMMITTEE
Take Time to be Wholely
The Exercise groups are over for the summer but that doesn’t
mean you shouldn’t be exercising, think of all the sweat and
whatever you put into exercising all winter. You don’t want to
lose any of that muscle tone and fitness. So KEEP
EXERCISING; walking, biking chasing grandchildren or
gardening are all good fitness maintainers. Keep at it, think of
how much better you feel and remember how much more
effort you will have to put in in the fall, if you quit now. We
will resume classes on Monday September 12th. See you in
the fall. Have a great summer!
KEEPING IN TOUCH
Welcome to New Members
On June 12 we welcomed Kevin Bazil, Astride Bengehya,
Olga Graham, Judy Lincoln, Emily Sams and Zawadi Zahinda
into membership at Emmanuel.
SummerHospitality
Summer may be a time when visitors attend Emmanuel and a
warm welcome is always appreciated. It is also a lovely time to
take a walk and visit someone that you haven’t seen recently.
If you know of any keeping intouch needs we would
appreciate hearing from you. Members of the committee are:
Janet Campbell, Lynn Gullins, Wayne Pointen, Hilde
Reynolds, Peter Rice, Ron Squires, Hazel Watts, Joyce White
(Chair).
Pictorial Directory Update, 2016
An update with newcomers’ photos will be available in
September.
Next Meeting:
The Keeping in Touch Committee will meet on June 27, at
7:00 P.M. in the library. We welcome new members and new
suggestions as to how we can keep in better touch with the
congregation and community.
Enjoy a peaceful, rejuvenating summer!
MINISTRY AND PERSONNEL
Happy Retirement!
We have been blessed by the ministries of Peter and Christine
for the past 9 and 18 years respectively. Their last worship
service with us will be June 26.
In their time with us, they have helped us to grow. They have
nudged us to reach a little further, and have been there to help
us find our way. They have helped us to learn about ourselves,
and have nurtured our spirits. They have comforted us in dark
times, and celebrated with us in joyous times. We are going to
miss them deeply, but we have many memories to treasure and
those memories will keep us connected to them.
We wish them all the best as they start on the next phase of
their life journey.
Update on Search for Supply Ministers
The Supply Search Committee is pleased to announce that on
June 21, 2016 the Council of Emmanuel approved the hiring of
Christine Johnson for the position of Supply Ordained Minister
and the hiring of Catherine Gutjahr for the position of Supply
Christian Development Minister; both for the period of
September 2016 through June 30, 2017. Both will start work at
Emmanuel on Tuesday, September 6, after the Labour Day
weekend.
Christine Johnson has a Masters of
Divinity from Emmanuel College,
University of Toronto and a Doctor of
Ministry in preaching from the Chicago
Theological Seminary. She was ordained
in 1996. She worked at churches in
London Conference and Quebec before
moving to Glebe St James in Ottawa and serving there for 5
1/2 years. Most recently she has been serving as a part time
pastoral care minister at Cityview United Church.
Her hobbies include fibre and mixed media arts.
Catherine Gutjahr is a diaconal minister
and was commissioned in 2010. She
completed her diaconal studies at the
Centre for Christian studies in Winnipeg.
A diaconal minister is one who is trained
to focus on education and enabling the
congregation to work together toward a vision of justice and
wholeness in the world. She served for two years at a rural
church in Newfoundland, and has served for the past four years
as a solo minister at Forest Home United Church in Orillia,
Ontario. Her husband was transferred to Ottawa this spring and
they have just moved here.
She has an interest in social justice issues.
We are looking forward to having Christine and Catherine join
us in the fall!
Stewart Hewlett will be on call for funerals and critical
pastoral care during July and August. In addition, Georgina
Fitzgerald and Steve Clifton from Rideau Park United Church
have also offered to be available if needed.

Valerie Lines, Wendy McCracken)
Update from the Joint Needs Assessment Committee
The JNAC held a workshop on Saturday, June 4 when we
shared summaries of the questionnaire responses and asked for
additional feedback.
We are currently working on the Joint Needs Assessment
report, using the questionnaire responses and workshop
observations to help us answer the required questions. We will
finish the report over the summer and plan to present it at the
September Council Meeting. If it is approved at Council, it
will then be presented to the congregation for their approval.
The Joint Needs Assessment Committee welcomes questions
and input. Please don’t hesitate to speak to any one of us.

MINUTE FOR MISSION
Fighting to Get Back to the Sea
On December 26, 2004, one of the deadliest natural
disasters in human history occurred when an
underwater earthquake near Indonesia triggered a massive
tsunami. In India, mostly in Tamil Nadu state, over 18,000
people were killed and more than 600,000 displaced.
Ten years later, people in Tamil Nadu are experiencing what
they call “a continuation of a permanent tsunami” due to large
corporate projects. In Kari Kattu Kuppum fishing village, for
example, villagers were relocated after the tsunami’s
destruction. Today, their path to the sea is barred by a large
wall built by a private company that wants to build on the
prime land on the other side, close to the sea.
This means villagers have to carry their nets, boats, and other
equipment over 2 km to reach the sea, a journey along which
they are often harassed by police. Community leaders have
even been arrested at the instigation of the private company,
they say, because they are fighting against the wall in court.
One community leader who had five cases filed against him
and has been arrested once says the problems they now face
are worse than the tsunami. The community originally had 350
families; less than 50 remain today.
Human Rights Advocacy and Research Foundation helps local
villagers bring their cases to court across Tamil Nadu.
Your donations to Mission & Service through Emmanuel’s
General Fund results in over $54,500 in annual contributions.
Thank you.

PASTORAL CARE
Please keep us informed of any pastoral concerns. We are
available to visit if anyone is in hospital, or has had a
bereavement, or is shut-in, or would like a visit from the
Minister, or a home communion or for any reason would like
to talk to someone from the Church. If you know of someone
who is in need of a visit/support, or home communion, or if
you would like a visit, please call the church office (613) 733
0437. We prefer to hear more than once rather than not at all,
because if we don’t know we can’t help.

Presbyterian Church (971 Woodroffe Avenue) 1:00-3:30pm or

SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEE
Ottawa Mennonite Refugee Association: Emmanuel sells
Loblaws and Farm Boy grocery cards during Coffee and
Conversation on the first Sunday of each month. Cards are
redeemable for their full value, and the grocery chain donates
5% of the card’s value to the Ottawa Mennonite Refugee
Association. The schedule will return to the normal first
Sunday of every month in July.
Food Bank Sundays: Emmanuel collects food bank items on
the third Sunday of each month, to distribute to the Russell
Heights Community House and the Rideau-Rockcliffe
Community Resource Centre. Non-perishable food items,
bathroom supplies, and school supplies are all welcome.
Next Meeting: The Social Action Committee meets at 11:30
AM on the third Sunday of every month, with the exception of
July and December. Next meetings will be held on August 21.
WORSHIP COMMITTEE
“Summertime, and the livin’ is easy …”
But it’s not always easy to be out of routine. Do we sometimes
extend ourselves just a little too much, expect too much of
those two glorious months, or spend too much on the essential
summer vacations, camps, childcare options, or travel plans?
Help with the Presbytery Campaign for the Haven
Affordable Housing Project:
SAC is currently looking for a representative from Emmanuel
to help with the Presbytery campaign for the Haven Affordable
Housing Project, which is an affordable housing project aiming
at reducing the level of poverty and homelessness among
Ottawa families who are in need of decent, secure and
affordable housing.
Emmanuel is one of the strongest supporters of MHI and the
most informed about the campaign. A Motion to support the
Multifaith Housing Initiative (MHI) capital campaign for the
Haven was tabled on April 19 and passed at the June 21st
meeting of Council.
This person will be part of a small team (4-5 people) who will
work together to lead the Presbytery initiative. The work will
involve planning and strategy about how to reach out to
congregations and encourage them to participate. It will also
involve planning how Presbytery itself can contribute to the
campaign.
One way to regain balance can be as easy as finding some
quiet time in Nature, or in a worship service during our time
away, or attending an Emmanuel service when in town!
Come and find the Quiet Centre … it will be here waiting for
you and any of your out-of-town guests all summer long!!
God’s Blessing: As Paul said to the community in Philippi,
“Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received
and heard and seen in me.” (Philippians 4:9). Perhaps these
words have even greater resonance for us as we bid farewell
and God-speed to Peter and Christine. They are leaving us
with a well-tilled garden, planted with abundant blessings!
You are invited to join us for the following Worship
services:
We welcome a variety of people to Emmanuel as summer
pulpit supply ministers and leaders. Under their worship
leadership, we will have ample opportunity to stretch
ourselves spiritually as we seek renewal and are prompted to
be engaged in the world: seeking justice, mercy, and walking
in companionship with our neighbour, each other, and God.

"Holding On. Letting Go."
As we adjust to our summer transition time between
June retirement celebrations and September's welcome of
a new ministry team, there will be a sharing gathering in the
Sanctuary from 7:00-7:30 p.m. Wed., July 6, to provide a
reflective space with music, coffee, tea & cookies. All are
welcome. For more information, please see Nyla Garrett or
Carol Scott.
Summer Music Ministry: The Senior Choir, Emmanubells,
JAM, the Junior Choir and Redwing Blackbird, are taking a
well-deserved break during July and August. We will not have
them to lead us for hymn singing, but know that singing comes
easily for most of the congregation. Sing out your Joy!
During worship, we would appreciate the offer of special
music as a substitute for anthems, so you are welcome to sign
up to sing as a small group, or solo, or play a musical
instrument - flute, trumpet, cello, viola, piano, etc. (even
bagpipes!!).
The Prayer Box will be checked on a semi-regular basis
during the summer.
The Prayer Table is available during office hours throughout
the week for anyone seeking some quiet reflective time.
Bulletin Covers: We have ordered some lovely bulletin covers
from the UCC offices to be used in 2017. We have decided to
create some of Emmanuel significance as well. If you have any
photos that you think might be suitable as a bulletin cover,
please send electronic attachments to the office and Pat will
forward them on for selection at our September 12 Worship
Committee meeting. No more than 5 per person and please
identify BULLETIN COVERS in the subject line.
“A Reflection Space for You” - at the back of each bulletin is
a space that can be used for mini- journaling or art doodling. Is
there something within the worship service that you found
encouraging, sparked further thought, memories, feelings,
actions, or was particularly inspiring or provoking? Where
does that take you in your faith journey this summer?
The worship experience can be extended beyond Sunday
morning by listening to the service and/or sermon on the
website. Perhaps there is a nugget worth reflecting on. Thanks
to the Communications Committee for making this available.
