concerned about making Americans aware of the importance ofmusic. He won the Pulitzer Prize for music in 1945.

Lessons at the OasisBy: Bob Schaffer, Headmaster

Last Monday’s Liberty Lecture presenter Helen Raleigh described Liberty as anacademic oasis. “This is the reason you all love your school so much,” she said to thelarge audience.

In the context of her remarks about the uprising in Hong Kong, Raleigh adjured studentsto heed lessons they learn about government structures, economic systems, rights, andentitlements, and to know the difference. Civic knowledge, she advised, makes thedifference between freedom, and totalitarianism.

Indeed, the latest National Assessment of Education Progress, released lastmonth, shows reading proficiency among American schoolchildren has dropped further;and math proficiency remains basically flat. In both cases, lowest-performing studentsare doing worse, year over year. Overall, the results show public schools are failing tomeet the academic needs of American students.

Page 3: Liberty Common Sensehs.libertycommon.org/UserFiles/Servers/Server...Great-Books Symposium Was Great. Last week’s “Great-Books Symposium” turned out to be a beautiful explanation

Speaking Wednesday at the high-school’s patriotism Lyceum, Liberty parent ArmyLt. Col. (ret) Rick Wrona expressed similar concern for the republic as newpolling shows 75% of Americans can’t name all three branches of government. Thesame poll shows more than a third cannot name any of the five rights protected underthe First Amendment.

Liberty’s students thrive on solid lessons about civics, economics, virtue, and theprinciples of freedom. After all, they’re learning at an intellectual oasis, refreshing theirmaturing minds with essential knowledge – the indispensable support for life, liberty, andthe pursuit of happiness.

Great-Books Symposium Was Great. Lastweek’s “Great-Books Symposium” turned outto be a beautiful explanation of LibertyCommon School’s philosophy about itsreading list, and the literary qualities we lookfor when adding books to the list of thosemeeting the standards of a truly greatbook. Kudos to Liberty’s librarian Mrs. PaigeGowing for organizing and leading thesymposium. Gowing is a former Libertystudent herself, a fact explaining her personalenthusiasm for acquainting Liberty studentswith books they ought to be reading. The

gathering occurred in the Constance Behr Memorial Library at the elementaryschool. Mrs. Gowing invited all Liberty parents and students to contact her for helpselecting age-appropriate books aligned with the school’s Core Knowledge Sequence, and school-wide curricular objectives.

History of LibertyHow Did We Get Here? Part Three of a Five-Part Series.

The History of Liberty Common School It was June of 1996. Advocates for the Core KnowledgeCharter School had come up short after being legally out-maneuvered by the school district. The parents faced a$5,000 debt for legal filings and newsletters to its growinglist of supporters. The unsinkable charter group wasted no time mobilizing

its next charter effort. It “passed the hat” yet again, this time requesting additionaldonations to hire a lawyer of its own. The parents contacted local attorney Mr. Mike Maxwell to assist in rewriting andnegotiating their charter. Maxwell was immediately captivated by the critical nature of theschool choice movement. He and his partners donated their time and expertise to thecause. The name of the new school would be Liberty Common. Why? At a common school, students of all ages and socio-economic backgrounds could obtain a commoneducation. But, why Liberty? Liberty stood for parents who would now have educationalchoice. Liberty stood for teachers who would no longer have to work in a brokensystem. And most importantly, Liberty would symbolize the true freedom that can only beachieved when a student possesses an educated mind. On October 1, 1996 the charter application for Liberty Common School was submitted toPSD, along with a file drawer of supporting documents, reports, and studies. The newcharter provided in-depth rationale for each aspect of the school the parents deemednon-negotiable. Still, negotiations dragged on for months. Finally PSD approved the charter, and a five-year contract was signed on February 24,1997. Now, the real work would begin! The charter group scrambled to simultaneously find a building and hire staff. Teams ofparents conducted interviews at the offices of Dr. Everett’s urology practice. (Applicantswere quite relieved to learn physical exams were not part of the drill!). Although there was still no school building, one courageous administrator, Dr. KathrynKnox, took a gamble and signed on as Liberty’s first headmaster. She quickly meldedwith the team and donated dozens of hours interviewing potential teachers. A powerhouse staff with a pioneering spirit was assembled, including Dave Lunn,Cherie Pedersen, and Jeff Siener, who are all still cornerstones of Liberty today. Thelate Connie Behr our former elementary school librarian was also actively involved.Teachers joined forces with parents to identify curriculum resources and skills programsto augment the Core Knowledge Sequence. Meanwhile, parent Peter Kast, worked fervently to pull together a suitable building andfinancing for the new school. Pursuing multiple deals simultaneously, Peter never gaveup as each financing option ultimately collapsed. Would anyone lend money to thisunknown entity called a charter school? It was now summer and fall was fast approaching. A building was needed immediately ifthere was to be sufficient time for renovations. Peter assembled a small group ofinvestors to purchase the Colgate factory near the detention center and lease the

Page 10: Liberty Common Sensehs.libertycommon.org/UserFiles/Servers/Server...Great-Books Symposium Was Great. Last week’s “Great-Books Symposium” turned out to be a beautiful explanation

building to the charter school. The deal closed in late June. The facility question was answered, but substantial reconstruction was necessary toconvert the former toothpaste and mouthwash factory into a school. Thirteen Libertyfamilies put up personal assets as collateral for the million dollar construction loan. It wasnow July. Amazingly, due to the support of former PSD Board President David Neenan, hisconstruction firm, the Neenan Company, completed the massive remodel in less than 60days! The concrete floors were bare, and the upstairs remained unfinished. A support columnstood in the middle of the small gym. The performance hall, wood gym, art rooms, andtrack were non-existent. But none of that mattered.

In September 1997, a dream became a reality as Liberty Common School opened itsdoors to more than four hundred eager young students in kindergarten through 7thgrade. And the rest is history!

Classical Manners For The Modern Youth

From the 1934 high-school textbook"Good Manners" used in "HouseholdScience" class of that day:

“Rule No. 88. Make-Up. High-school girlsshould not need rouge if they eat and sleepas they should, and take plenty of exercise. The ideal in using any make-up is to makethe user appear youthful without givingaway the secret that artificial means havebeen used. A clear, clean, youthful skin is amost prized possession.”

Page 16: Liberty Common Sensehs.libertycommon.org/UserFiles/Servers/Server...Great-Books Symposium Was Great. Last week’s “Great-Books Symposium” turned out to be a beautiful explanation

When the finance and real-estate department of Colorado State University’s College ofBusiness assembled its best students to compete in a prestigious competition, it madesure senior Will Denton was on the team. The 2016 Liberty grad and School Captainled the four-man team in winning first place, pulling down a big trophy, and hauling in$1,500 in prize money in Colorado’s seminal case competition. Denton is now a senior finance and real-estate major. The competition focused onassessing retail investment opportunities in the New Orleans region utilizing riskassessment, market analysis, property acquisition, and many more skills. According to the CSU story, “as they developed their strategy, members started to seethat classroom educational exercises are developed to teach a single concept. In thecase competition, much like the real world, issues aren’t as clear cut. The complexityadded a dimension that expanded on the team members’ coursework.” The victory was chronicled in a recent feature article posted at the College of Business’website.
