Liberal Arts is a concentration within the Humanities Major at San Jose State University leading to the Bachelor of Arts Degree. It is an interdisciplinary major integrating approaches from the humanities, the arts, and the social sciences. The wide variety of subjects explored in this major provides excellent preparation for a variety of professional goals. Whatever careers students may eventually choose, they will find that Liberal Arts has enhanced their appreciation of literature and the arts and deepened their understanding of the human condition. As a liberal arts student your education will cultivate your ability to reason clearly, to communicate well, and to solve complex problems. Because these skills are transferable to many work situations, you will be valuable to prospective employers. Humanities Major Concentration in Liberal Arts Why do students choose Liberal Arts? Students choose this major because of its rich and varied program of courses. The career goals of Liberal Arts students include social work, counseling, library science, law, business, and work in government and non-profit agencies. Liberal Arts is also an excellent preparation program for advanced graduate studies. How can I become a Liberal Arts major? Select the Humanities major, Liberal Arts Concentration when applying to San Jose State University. Or if you decide after admission to major in Liberal Arts, download a change of major form online at www.sjsu.edu/registrar/forms. Then, make an appointment to see the Liberal Studies Advisor. If you have attended other colleges, you must send or fax copies of your unofficial transcripts to the Humanities Department before the appointment.
