Dr. Seuss to Phinney Elementary

In celebration of Dr. Seuss's Birthday, the LHS Teen Advisory Group traveled to Phinney Elementary to share their favorite Dr. Seuss book with the students during their library skills time. Several of the TAG members wore Cat in the Hat hats and Ms. Lehman brought Dr. Seuss bookmarks to hand out to each of the elementary students. As the elementary students came to the library, they were broken into small groups and placed with one of the TAG members for their first story. As groups finished with their story, the elementary students rotated to a new TAG member for a different story. The young students rotated 3-4 times before the ned of their library time. Some of the books shared by the teens were The Cat in Hat Comes Back, There's a Wocket in My Pocket, The Sneeches and Other Stories, The Cats Quizzler, And to Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street, I Can Lick 30 Tigers Today and Other Stories, The Butter Battle Book and several others. While fun was had by all the students, the TAG members commented that they had their book memorized after so many readings.

Mission

The Larned High School Library will be an inviting, user-friendly hub providing opportunities for active, engaging and challenging learning for students and staff through various media resources, programming and collaboration. The LHS Library will provide a quality program that will enable students to be lifelong learners and enhance the curriculum and technology standards of Larned High School.

Many people have asked, "What is TAG?" TAG is an extra-curricular program sponsored by the LHS Library Media Center and stands for Teen Advisory Group. The mission of the LHS Teen Advisory Group is to insure the availability of quality resources for both leisure activities and school related assignments for LHS students and staff. Through creative, original programming, the Teen Advisory Group will encourage student and staff involvement in the LHS Library Media Center. The members of Teen Advisory Group will engage in activities designed to promote, encourage and enhance their reading skills and appreciation. Members of TAG are expected to:

• Provide suggestions/recommendations to the Library Media Specialist on materials to purchase for the library collection (including books, audio books, magazines and graphic novels)

• Discuss how the Larned High School Media Center can better serve the needs of LHS students and staff

• Suggest and plan programs for the library to offer• Assist the Library Media Specialist with projects as requested to help improve

library services• Promote and encourage the love of reading in others• Read, discuss and plan promotion of the Teen Top Ten (this is done during the

summer)• Write book reviews and create book trailers for the Larned High School

Media Center website• Attend as many programs as possible and help with setup and cleanup• Be a responsible library user • Set an example of appropriate library behavior for other students• Help promote participation in library programs

In turn, the students become an active supporter of the library and gain an understanding of how libraries function and why they need supporters. Although the TAG program only began three years ago, we have seen a 33% growth in our number of members with potential for continued growth. Over the past three years, TAG members have taken part in planning, decorating, promoting and managing the Scholastic Book Fair; planning, promoting and organizing of various fundraisers for the library; promoting reading through special programs like Banned Book Week and Teen Top Ten; promoting the love reading by visiting the elementary schools and reading their favorite children's books to the students; developing their critiquing skills through the participation of special book discussion meetings; and growing in their personal relation skills through various TAG parties. Sadly, the TAG program may come to an end this year as the district library program will be revamped and shift to a district librarian. The current TAG members are still undecided about their desire to continue with the program. Many have stated that it will not be the same without Ms. Lehman and while they respect the new district librarian, Rosa Blattner, they feel it will not be the same.
