INTRODUCTION

Le Programme d’appui en exogamie est une initiative divisionnaire mise en place pour les familles de la Division scolaire franco-manitobaine (DSFM) et du préscolaire dont un parent est francophone et l’autre non francophone. L’exogamie est définie comme étant l’union en-tre deux personnes chez qui la langue maternelle et les antécédents culturels diffèrent.

Le programme propose à ces familles des pistes d’aide, des outils et des ressources leur per-mettant de relever les défis particuliers auxquels ils doivent faire face dans l’accompagne-ment de leur enfant inscrit à l’école française et au préscolaire francophone. Les stratégies d’appui conçues favorisent une participation active des parents non francophones tout en respectant la mission première de la DSFM, celle d’assurer la vitalité linguistique et culturelle de sa communauté scolaire. Le programme appuie aussi divers intervenants scolaires, prés-colaires et divisionnaires qui ont eux aussi à relever les défis de l’exogamie.

Le livret bilingue Lexique et outil de traduction – Petite enfance, conçu pour les couples d’u-nion exogame dont les enfants sont inscrits à un préscolaire francophone, présente entre autres des lexiques de mots reliés au monde préscolaire de leurs enfants organisés par thè-mes, des suggestions de ressources en traduction et des stratégies d’appui en ce qui a trait à la prononciation. Un disque compact comprenant les termes présentés accompagne ce li-vret. Des pages de notes personnelles y sont insérées ainsi que des espaces libres sous cha-que thème. Il est ainsi possible d’ajouter d’autres traductions de mots et de phrases ren-contrés au cours de l’année préscolaire. La fiche de communication incluse permet aux pa-rents et aux intervenants de mieux planifier les modes de communication entre ces derniers.

INTRODUCTION

The support Program in Exogamy is a school division initiative set up for families of the Divi-sion scolaire franco-manitobaine (DSFM) and of preschool age children with a francophone parent. Exogamy is described as being a union between two people with different mother tongues and cultural backgrounds. The program provides families with helpful suggestions, tools, and resources to enable them to meet the unique challenges they face in supporting their children who attend l’école fran-çaise and francophone preschool. The support strategies developed foster non-francophone parents’ active involvement while respecting the DSFM’s primary community. The program also supports various school, preschool, and divisional contributors who must also face the challenges regarding exogamy. The bilingual booklet Glossary and Translation Tool —- Early Childhood developed for ex-ogamous families whose children are enrolled in a francophone preschool includes, among other things, glossaries with words classified by topic that are related to their children’s world of preschool, as well as suggestions for translation resources and support strategies regarding pronunciation. A compact disc which includes the terms presented accompanies this booklet. Pages to write personal notes can also be found as well as available space un-der each topic. It is also possible to add other translations of words and phrases encoun-tered during the preschool year. The attached communication form allows parents and con-tributors to better plan means of communication between one another.

Le Centre de la petite enfance et de la famille (CPEF)

The CPEF brings together all programs and services for families with preschool-aged children. It is connected to the school and is run by a local coordinator. The school admini-stration, the childcare centre and the nursery school staff all work together with the local coordinator for early childhood development in the community. http://cpefmb.org

La Coalition francophone de la petite enfance et de la famille

This provincial Coalition, formed by DSFM, SFM, FPCP and Enfants en santé Manitoba, ensures comprehensive pro-gramming and services for all francophone families in Mani-toba.

La Commission scolaire franco-manitobaine (CSFM)

The Francophone School Board governs all aspects pertain-ing to the Division scolaire franco-manitobaine (DSFM) and is composed of elected trustees. The Board is established under the Manitoba Public School Act.

Le conseil d’administration

A Board of directors is elected by the membership of a childcare centre. This Board governs the operation of the childcare centre.

Coordonnatrice CPEF Each CPEF has a local Early Childhood coordinator who coordinates and organises programs and services for families of the school community.

Coordonnatrice provinciale CPEF

At the provincial level, a coordinator is responsible for over-seeing everything pertaining to the local CPEF's coordina-tors.

Fédération provinciales des comités de parents (FPCP)

This provincial organization supports parents, childcare Boards and school parents councils. The FPCP offers pro-grams and services to families. The Centre de ressources éducatives à l’enfance (CRÉÉ) is a resource centre with a toy lending and library in French. http://www.entreparents.mb.ca

La Foire de la petite enfance

The Early Childhood Screening Fair is offered every spring to children of 3 years of age. The child accompanied by his or her parents is seen by different specialists to evaluate the child's development. Parents receive guidance and infor-mation pertaining to the child's school readiness.

Le Formulaire d’inscription

Every CPEF requires parents to complete a registration form when coming to the centre.

La garderie d’âge scolaire

This school-aged childcare is a service for children 5 to 12 years old, before or after school hours.

La garderie préscolaire It is a preschool childcare service for children 2 to 6 years old.

La pouponnière It is an infant care service for children ages 0 to 2 years of age.

La prématernelle The nursery school is a service for children of ages between 3 and 4 years old.

Le préscolaire Children ages 0 to 5 belong in the period known as the preschool stage of development.

Le programme de francisation

La Francisation is offered by Nursery School and Childcare Programs. This program is designed to teach français through play to children whose parents don’t speak or have not spoken French.

PRONUNCIATIONS FRENCH — ENGLISH

h is always silent in French;

An s at the end of a word to indicate the plural is silent;

qu sounds like k (not like kw as in quick);

th is pronounced t;

ch is pronounced like the English sh;

i is pronounced like the long English e (bee);

y sounds like yes even at the end of a word;

ou in French always sounds like group (not out);

oy and oi sounds like the wa in water;

au and eau have the long o sound (so);

ez has the long a sound (hay);

Accents change the sounds of vowels: è sounds much like the short

English e (heck) while é has the long a sound (hay);

Stress fall on the last sounded syllable (ami sounds like am-ee);

When a word begins with a vowel (or a silent h), it is usually joined

with the last consonant of the preceding word.

Abbreviations In French, a period follows an abbreviation only if the last

letter is not included in the abbreviation

(e.g., Monsieur becomes M. and Madame becomes Mme).

Contractions An apostrophe is used to replace a vowel because two

succeeding vowels would make pronunciation difficult

(e.g., qui il becomes qu’il).

Capitalization Only the first word in a title, any name of a person or place

is capitalized.

Gender In French, all nouns have gender (e.g., le or un is

masculine and la or une is feminine).

Money It is written differently in French

FICHE DE COMMUNICATION COMMUNICATION FORM

La Fiche de communication est un outil pour mettre en place les meilleurs moyens de com-munication possible entre le personnel du centre préscolaire et les parents non francophones. Le rôle de l’éducatrice en petite enfance est d’accompagner votre enfant dans son chemine-ment préscolaire en français. Pour ce faire, il est très important qu’elle interagisse en français avec votre enfant et qu’elle maintienne le lien francophone entre elle, le personnel du centre et votre enfant. Afin d’appuyer le personnel, il est important de compléter la fiche qui les ai-dera à connaître les moyens de communication les plus efficaces entre vous, parent non fran-cophone, et le personnel du centre préscolaire. L’éducatrice vous demandera de compléter une copie de ce court formulaire dès l’entrée au centre préscolaire francophone. Servez-vous de la section Autres informations de la Fiche de communication pour ajouter des détails qui pourraient être utiles afin de bien communiquer avec le personnel du centre.

The Communication Form is a tool used to set up the best possible means of communication

between preschool centre staff and non-francophone parents. The early childhood educator’s

role is to accompany your child on his or her journey through preschool en français. To do so,

it is very important that the educator interact with your child en français and maintain the fran-

cophone connection between herself, the centre’s staff, and your child. In order to provide

support to the staff, it is important to fill out the form which will help them find the best means

of communication possible between you the non-francophone parent and the preschool cen-

tre staff.

The educator will ask you to complete a copy of this short form as soon as the francophone

preschool year begins. Please use the section Other information to specify any relevant de-

tails that may be useful in better communicating with centre’s staff.

Un disque compact se trouve à la fin du Lexique et outil de traduction — Petite enfance. Il contient une compilation du vocabulaire retrouvé dans ce livret. Il suffit de mettre le disque compact dans votre ordinateur et de commencer la présentation pour pouvoir entendre la prononciation en français des mots reliés au monde de la petite enfance qui sont inclus dans ce livret. Ces derniers sont présentés par thèmes en suivant le même format que le lexique. Vous pouvez ainsi pratiquer votre oreille en prévision de votre prochaine visite au centre préscolaire de votre enfant, ou tout simplement apprendre du vocabulaire en français au même rythme que votre enfant.

hood. It contains a compilation of the vocabulary found in this booklet, You simply need to

insert the compact disc in your computer and start the presentation in order to hear the pro-

Ce livret a été créé dans le cadre du Programme d’appui en exogamie de la Division scolaire franco-manitobaine (DSFM). Il s’agit d’un des outils développés pour appuyer les parents d’union exogame à relever les défis auxquels ils doivent faire face dans l’accompagnement de leur enfant inscrit dans un centre préscolaire francophone.

Pour les couples d’union exogame qui se préparent à la rentrée prochaine au monde scolai-re, c’est-à-dire le saut vers la maternelle, vous recevrez lors de l’inscription à l’école une Trousse d’appui — exogamie. Cette trousse contient le livret Lexique et outil de traduction — Niveau élémentaire, dans lequel se trouve la terminologie reliée au monde scolaire de la DSFM qui fait suite au livret Lexique et outil de traduction — Petite enfance. Beaucoup d’au-tres informations et ressources utiles et pertinentes se trouvent dans le sac rouge Trousse d’appui; n’hésitez pas à le consulter.

CONCLUSION

This booklet was created as part of the Support Project for Exogamous Families of the Divi-sion scolaire franco-manitobaine (DSFM). It is one of the tools developed to enable parents of exogamous families to meet the challenges they must face in supporting their child en-rolled in a francophone preschool centre. Couples in an exogamous union who are preparing to enter into the school world, in other words preparing for the jump to kindergarten with their child, will receive a Support Kit for Exogamous Families at enrolment. This kit contains the booklet Glossary and Translation Tool — Elementary Level, a follow-up to the booklet Glossary and Translation Tool — Early Childhood, in which you can find terminology related to the school world of the DSFM.
