TURNING EARTH E10 is a new centre for ceramics based in the Wilder Creative building on Argall Avenue. The social enterprise is run by brother and sister Lewis and Tallie Maughan and is located in a beautiful, airy, naturally-lit space on the top floor of the building. The centre includes a large open plan open-access membership studio, which enables part-time makers and serious hobbyists to make work together in a community environment, with the benefit of shared facilities. The space also includes a classroom for ceramics courses for those new to the craft, where up to 13 courses a week will be taught by professional artists.

In an adjoining studio, a cohort of 30 career makers are part of the first full-time ceramics incubator in London. Previously, Tallie had experience of working in CSR in a corporate context but got bored. She went to USA in 2009 and through personal circumstances became a theatre manager, where she started to realise the potential of open access studios. She returned to London

in 2012 and opened the first Turning Earth operation in Hoxton in December 2013, which now has a 9-month waiting list, hence the need for more space. Lewis came on board in 2014, having had a senior position in the healthcare profession, and according to Tallie he transformed the Hoxton operation before turning his attention to ensuring the E10 operation launched successfully. As with the Hoxton business, funds were raised through crowdfunding and since they launched on 1st March they now have over 120 new members, 20 incubator professionals, and 13 classes running every week at both beginner and intermediate levels. Turning Earth will be taking part in the Open Studios mentioned in the ‘News’ section, where 100 members will be exhibiting and selling work, accompanied by food, drink and live music.

MORGAN THOMAS CONSTRUCTION LTD started 20 years ago, formed by brothers Matthew and Russell Conn. Matthew was an apprentice carpenter from school whereas Russell ‘taught himself’. Matthew spent many years working at London Borough of Tower Hamlets, eventually managing large scale building contracts. After Tower Hamlets, Matthew spent 6 years as a private contractor before starting Morgan Thomas with Russell in 1999. The company was named after the founders’ 2 sons, Morgan and Thomas, and offers a high quality bespoke carpentry and joinery service, specialising in jobs that ‘others won’t do.’ They have undertaken many high profile contracts; clients include the Saudi Royal Family, Greedy Cow in Bethnal

Green, Dalston Rooftop Garden, Arcola Theatre, Trim Editing and October Films. Morgan Thomas also have a partnership company Fire Door London Ltd, which deals with the supply, fit, upgrade and repair of fire rated doors across London. Matthew loves the Argall location, surrounded by friendly neighbours who all help each other out. The station opening and fibre optic broadband have made business even better. On a happy and positive note Morgan, Matthew’s son, has just joined the company on a carpentry and joinery apprentice.
