LevitatingTrainDescription:
Thisisagreatdemonstrationoflikepolesrepellingeachother.Wehaveaplatformwhichfloatsaboveapairofmagnetictracks,andcanbegentlypushedtooneendortheother.ThisissimilarinconcepttotheMAGLEVtrainswhicharebeingworkedoninGermany,JapanandFrance.
Construction:
Thetracksaresimplytwomagnetstrips,eachmeasuringabout24"long,1/2"wide,1/8"thick,withtheirNorthsidefacingup.Theyareplacedabout1/8"infromtheedgesofapieceof3/4"thickwoodshelving(withawhitemelaminesurface)base,24"longand4"wide.Endsandabackwallareattachedtothebase,about3"tall.ThefrontofthebasehasaPlexiglaswallattachedtoit,sothatyoucanseethetrainplatformfloatabovethetracks.
Thetrainplatformismadeoffoamcoreboard,3and7/8"wideby6"longand1/4"thick.

Onthebottomisapairofmagnetstrips,about6"long,1/2"wide,1/4"thick,withtheirNorthsidefacingdown.Theyareplacedabout1/8"infromthesideedges.
Attachedtotheendsofthebaseandtotheendsofthetrainplatformaresmallerdiskceramicmagnets,placedsothattheNorthendsfaceeachothersothattheyactasspringswhenthetrainreachestheendofthetrack.Anextrastripoffoamcoreboardwasaddedtothetopandbottomtoprovidealargerareatoattachtheendmagnets.
AlongthesideedgesoftheplatformwasplacedastripofTeflontape.Thisprovidedaverysmooth,slipperysurfaceforthetraintorubagainstasittravelsdownthetrack.ThebackwallandthePlexiglasfrontwallareneededtokeeptheplatformcenteredabovethetracks.Whatwouldhappeniftheyweren'tthere?
TheLEGOpeoplewereaddedaspassengersforinterest.

Demonstration:Givethetrainplatformagentlepushfromonesidetotheother.Youwillseeitfloatoverthetracks.Themagnetsontheendskeeptheplatformfromhittingtheends(don'tsmashitintotheends!).
Conclusions:Thisisjustafunexperimentwhichdemonstratesthelikepolesrepellingprincipleofmagnetics.Therearefourpairsofpolesrepellingeachotheronthistrain.Thisisasimplifieddiagramshowingtheareasofattractionandrepulsionbetweenthemagnetsforthisexperiment.

Theyprovidedthetwolongmagnetstripsforthe"tracks"aswellasthetwoshorterpiecesforthebottomoftheplatform.Wemountedthetracksontoapieceofshelving,andusedapieceoffoamcoreboardfortheplatform.Thisworkedoutbetterthanthewoodenpieceswhichcamewiththekit.Don'tforgetthesidestokeeptheplatformcenteredabovethetracks!Thiskitcostsabout$25,butit'spossibletopurchaseonlysomeofthestripmagnetsforalotlessfromDowlingMagnets.
Sincethefoamcoreplatformweusedwassolight,themagnetsdonothavetoberealstrong.Withtheonesthatcameinthekit,thebottomoftheplatformmagnetsfloatabout1/4"abovethetracks.
