Why use Formative Assessments?The goal of formative assessment is to gather feedback that can be used by the instructor and the students to guide improvements in the ongoing teaching and learning context ~ Carnegie Mellon Center for Teaching Excellence

At NWTC, we refer to this as Assessment FOR learning...* Can students identify the main point of a lecture/lesson* Are students ready for practice problems, lab exercises, writing 

prompts, projects, and will they complete those tasks successfully?

As an Instructor, formative assessments provide you with a quick snap shot of your learners, evaluating their understanding of the material, as well as the success of your 'lecture'

Kahoot!* A game‐based classroom response system 

(think Trivia at Buffalo Wild Wings)* Web‐based: any device/computer/laptop that can access the InternetHere's How It Works1) Users will go to kahoot.it and enter a unique game pin and their name2) Once all participants are entered into the 'game', instructor will 

activate game play3) Questions will appear up front on screen. First the question, followed 

by possible answers. Each question has a time limit!4) Players/Students will ONLY see the corresponding colors/shapes on 

their device5) Correct answers and speed will be awarded point value

* those using smart devices must keep device active to avoid getting 'kicked' out of game play

Socrative * Lets teachers engage and assess their students with educational 

activities on tablets, laptops, and smartphones (web‐based or App)* Through the use of real time questioning, instant result aggregation 

and visualization, teachers can gauge the whole class' current level of understanding

* Can also be game‐based through use of 'Space Race'Here's How it Works* Teacher creates an 'activity', which is then assigned a room #* Students go to socrative.com and click on Student Login Button

 * Enter a Room Name and Join the 'Room' * 'Activity' will start when instructor prompts room is ready ‐ 

(depending on type of activity)

Why use Kahoot! or Socrative?* Assess students for learning of instructional material

* Beginning of class activity to assess student knowledge from pre‐class 

assignment (reading, video lecture, case‐study, etc.)

* Identify areas of strength and weakness

* Text and Picture based options for questions

* Summative Assessment Review questions

* Item Analysis options

* Valuable instructor feedback gained in regards to how to proceed with 

class

* Gives all students a voice

* Instructors can pose questions to students OR students can pose

* Share photos/videos relative to a given topic

* Great place for a class exit ticket
