Levels of Organization

Objective: Relate an organ to its parts and the

larger system it is a part.

Essential Question: How does the body

work together?

Cells are the basic unit of life!

Groups of cells working together form a TISSUE

There are 4 types of tissues with different jobs:

• Epithelial Tissue• Nervous Tissue• Muscle Tissue• Connective Tissue

EPITHELIAL TISSUE

Covers and protects underlying tissue. When you look at the surface of your

skin, you see epithelial tissue

NERVOUS TISSUE

Sends electrical signals through the body. It is found in the brain,

nerves and sense organs.

MUSCLE TISSUE

Made up of cells that can contract and relax to produce movement

CONNECTIVE TISSUE

Joins, supports, protects, insulates, nourishes, and cushions organs. It also keeps organs from falling apart.

Two or more tissues working together, form an organ.

Organs include the heart, skin, lungs, liver, kidneys, etc.

ORGAN + ORGAN = ORGAN SYSTEM

Organs working together

make up an organ system.

The failure of any part can affect

the entire system

Organism

• Any living thing.

• Organ Systems work together to make up organism!

• Integumentary system

• Muscular system

• Skeletal system

• Cardiovascular system

• Respiratory system

• Urinary system

• Reproductive system.

• Nervous system

• Lymphatic system

• Digestive system

• Endocrine system

11 MAJOR ORGAN SYSTEMS all depend on each other!

Reproductive System

Functions: to allow the organism to reproduce (make babies). Pertinent (extremely important) to the survival of the species.

Reproductive System

Structures: Females produces cells called eggs held in the organs called ovaries, and males produce the cells spermatozoon held in organs called testes.

Integumentary System

Includes skin, hair, and nails.

The skin is our largest organ!

Muscular System

Muscles for moving, heart beat, and digestion.

Skeletal System

Bones frame and protect body parts.

Cardiovascular System

The heart pumps blood to every cell for food and waste removal.

Respiratory System

Lungs absorb oxygen and release carbon dioxide.

Urinary System

Removes wastes from the blood and regulates body fluids.

Nervous System

Receives and sends electrical messages with neurons.

Lymphatic System

Returns leaked fluids to blood vessels and helps flush harmful germs out.

Digestive System

Breaks down food into nutrients.

Endocrine System

Glands regulate body functions by sending out chemical messages.
