Joyce is helping Gloria to prepare dinner.

Auf dem Tisch auf der Terrasse gab es schon fünf Schüsseln und fünfmal Besteck, aber keine Gläser. Joyce ging in die Küche, um sie zu holen. „Für Martin brauchst du kein Glas, der kommt nicht“, sagte Gloria, „Und Rainer hat auch angerufen, weil er noch arbeiten muss. Ich bin so böse auf ihn! Er wird später kommen und den Nachtisch mit uns essen. Und wer ist dieser Junge, von dem du geredet hast?“

„Er heißt Elias. Ich gebe ihm Gitarrenunterricht“, sagte Joyce.

Das Essen war längst fertig, aber Elias war noch nicht da. Joyce versuchte, ihn auf seinem Handy zu erreichen, aber er antwortete nicht.

3 Read the article about the charitable organisation, the Salvation Army.

Gert Scharf, der den Wohltätigkeitsverein die Heilsarmee in Dresden leitet, ist sich der Verantwortung bewusst, die er und sein Team im Winter tragen. „Bei den niedrigen Temperaturen ist es sehr gefährlich, draußen unter Brücken oder auf Sitzbänken zu schlafen”.

Oft sind die Helfer dann bis Mitternacht unterwegs, um Menschen zu suchen, die auf den Straßen schlafen. Sie bringen ihnen warme Getränke, Suppe und Schlafsäcke. Sie haben genug Kleidung.

Manchmal wollen die Menschen auf der Straße im ersten Moment nicht mitkommen. Wenn sie dann aber hören, dass die Gruppe helfen will, sind sie dankbar. Sie trinken Kaffee zusammen und nehmen oft die Einladung der Gruppe an, sie in eines der so genannten Nachtcafés zu bringen, wo man sie beraten kann.

4 Read the extract from the literary text.

Momo is helping two men.

Man sah fast immer jemanden bei Momo sitzen, der mit ihr redete. Was die kleine Momo konnte wie kein anderer, das war: zuhören.

Eines Tages kamen zwei Männer zu ihr, die sich gestritten hatten.

Der Erste hieß Nino und war der Bäcker im Dorf. Der Zweite, ein Bauarbeiter namens Stefan, war ein starker Mann mit schwarzem Schnurrbart und Glatze.

„Weißt du, was Nino über mich gesagt hat?“, rief Stefan Momo zu. „Er hat gesagt, meine Arbeit ist schlecht!“

„Aber Stefan“, antwortete Nino, „das war doch nicht ernst“.

„Über so was kann ich nicht lachen“, sagte Stefan.

„Und du hast mein Bierglas genommen“, sagte Nino.„Habe ich nicht“, antwortete Stefan.

Momo schaute sie an und sagte nichts. Die Männer wussten nicht mehr, was sie machen sollten.

Eine Minute lang haben alle über den Streit nachgedacht und die Männer begannen zur gleichen Zeit zu lachen. Dann nahmen sie beide Momo in den Arm und sagten: „Vielen Dank!“

Basel

5 Read what four young people say about their hometown of Basel.

Zehra: Ich finde meine Stadt wunderbar. Die neue Architektur gefällt mir. Man kann viele tolle Aktivitäten am Rhein machen, zum Beispiel tolle Schifffahrten oder Spaziergänge den Fluss entlang. Im Sommer lädt der Rhein zum Baden ein. Basel ist auch eine grüne Stadt mit zahlreichen Parks und botanischen Gärten.

Jonas: Im Sommer gibt es viele Möglichkeiten, Sport zu treiben. Zu Fuß oder mit dem Fahrrad können Sie die wunderschöne Gegend in der Nähe von der deutschen Grenze mit der Schweiz entdecken. Im Winter können Sie bei gutem Wetter das kleine, aber malerische Skigebiet in der Region austesten.

Lena: Die drittgrößte Stadt der Schweiz ist auch die Kultur hauptstadt des Landes. Im neuen Naturhistorischen Museum können Sie sich stundenlang die Bilder von berühmten Künstlern anschauen. Leider ist das Restaurant dort etwas kostspielig.

Daniel: Die meiste Zeit verbringt man in Basel unter freiem Himmel. Zahlreiche Bars sind bis spät in die Nacht offen. Leckere hausgemachte Gerichte werden auch in vielen Lokalen verkauft. Entdecken Sie auch die hübsche Altstadt mit dem Rathaus aus rotem Sandstein am Marktplatz und den Dom, der zwischen 1019 und 1500 im romanischen Stil erbaut wurde.

6 Read the article about Hermann John.

Seit mehr als 10 Jahren macht Hermann John seinen Job. Er ist Marktmeister beim Weihnachtsmarkt in Freudenstadt. Im Interview mit einer lokalen Zeitung spricht er über die Rolle.

„Seit 23 Jahren helfe ich auch bei der Planung des Marktes. So kam es dann, dass ich gefragt wurde, ob ich Marktmeister sein wollte, und ich habe diesen Job natürlich angenommen. Seither bin ich jedes Jahr hier, um zu schauen, dass alles so läuft, wie es soll.“

„Meine Arbeit beginnt schon im Herbst, also: Wo stehen welche Hütten und wann werden sie aufgebaut? Ich schaue auch, ob die Dekoration weihnachtlich genug ist. Wir wollen, dass alles zur Stimmung passt. Dann muss ich die Verkehrssicherheit organisieren. Das heißt, es muss sichergestellt werden, dass die Gänge zum Beispiel breit genug sind, sodass geräumt werden kann, wenn viel Schnee fällt. Wenn die Gänge zu eng sind, dann kommen große Fahrzeuge nicht durch. Wenn der Markt läuft, dann kümmere ich mich darum, dass alles funktioniert. Ich organisiere zum Beispiel die Stromversorgung.“

„Es lohnt sich, unseren Markt zu besuchen: Zum einen haben wir über 300 Weihnachtsbäume. Zum anderen gibt es fünf Kunsthandwerkhütten, die regionale Produkte verkaufen. Die hatten wir letztes Jahr nicht.“

Der Sprachkurs in Heidelberg ging am 30. August zu Ende. Sechshundert Teilnehmer aus 24 Ländern haben ihr Deutsch verbessert und neue Freunde kennen gelernt.

Für Maria aus den Vereinigten Staaten war der Kurs, der einen Monat gedauert hat, ein positives Erlebnis. „In meinem Land hält man die Deutschen manchmal für ernst und korrekt. Die Wiener Philharmoniker geben jedes Jahr im Goldenen Saal des Musikvereins ihr Neujahrskonzert. Die ganze Welt sieht zu und feiert den ersten Tag des neuen Jahres mit.

Das wohl berühmteste Konzert der Welt wird durch eine Fernsehübertragung in über 90 Länder für ein Millionenpublikum ausgestrahlt. Um das Konzert live in Wien zu sehen, braucht man etwas Glück, denn die Eintrittskarten dafür sind wegen der großen Nachfrage immer schwer zu finden. Sie kosten zwischen € 35 und € 1090.

Das Neujahrskonzert der Wiener Philharmoniker bietet das Beste vom Besten: Das Musikprogramm mit Musikstücken der Strauss-Familie sorgt für einen guten Start ins noch junge Jahr.

Die Musiker spielen ganz oben in der Liga der internationalen Top-Orchester mit – es sind die Wiener Philharmoniker. Auch die Dirigenten zählen zu den Weltbesten. Jedes Jahr wird jemand anderes eingeladen.

Das Neujahrskonzert findet im Musikverein statt, dem Zentrum für Musikfreunde in Wien. Der Große Saal wird auch Goldener Saal genannt. Er gilt nicht nur als einer der schönsten Säle der Welt, er hat auch eine perfekte Akustik.

Es gibt zwei andere Möglichkeiten, das Neujahrskonzert in Wien live und kostenlos zu erleben: bei Übertragungen im Freien am Rathausplatz und am Stephansplatz. Man muss aber warme Kleidung mitbringen.
