Learning programme In this unit the learner will:
Use a variety of stitches, threads, needles and tensions to achieve different effects, using both straight and automatic stitches
Use a variety of attachments to produce pin tucks, stitched tucks, buttonholes, shell edges, top-stitched edges, zig-zag neatening, blind hemming and gathers
Use the appropriate attachment to insert a zip fastener in a seam and insert a fabric covered piping cord around a corner, on a sample measuring 15 cm square
Use contrasting fabrics and join together 3 parallel strips of fabric, each measuring 2.5 cm x 15 cm when finished, and join together 6 squares of fabric, each measuring 5 cm square when finished, in a 3 by 2 block so that the corners meet accurately
Use a variety of attachments to attach cords, laid threads, lace and ribbons to the surface of fabrics, using a variety of stitches
Use stitches and manipulation of the fabric to create surface textures, including cross tucking, wave tucking and ruching
Use the darning foot, or fabric held in an embroidery hoop, to work with the machine feed dropped or covered to develop free machine stitches as a surface decoration
Use free machine stitches on a variety of fabrics, including water soluble materials, to produce cut-away effects, open work and fabrics created from stitched threads.

Sample and choose a seam/seams and neatening methods suitable for the selected fabric and the required finish
Work a sample of simple methods of fastening – buttons, loops, press studs, hooks and eyes
Produce an economical lay and cut out the garment
Baste, fit and adjust the garment as required during the making process

Make up a hat toile in calico to test the size and shape and adjust as required
Sample and choose a seam/seams suitable for the selected medium weight fabric and the required finish on the hat

Adjust the hat as required during the making process with particular attention to the fit of the headline
Top stitch the brim or peak and fit a head ribbon
Use steam to shape and set the hat
