Dear Colleagues ,

Last month my family and I celebrated Mother’s Day. We were going to do it in May but we postponed it in

the hope that the deadlock would open up and it did! We had lunch together at my daughter María José and

her two children’s home, my grandson Nacho and granddaughter Valen. Paty was

there with her new doggie Sir Paul - guess why she chose that name?- My eldest

granddaughter Sofia, her husband Manuel and my three great grandchildren,

Joaquin, Vicente and baby Francisco were part of the celebration as well as my

granddaughter Agustina, her husband, Facundo and their baby boy, my great

grandson Juan Pablo. Oh! I forgot Salem, Valen’s naughty black cat! Lovely

Mother’s Day! I wish you enjoyed a happy Mother’s Day with your nearest and

dearest!

Paty and all the Dickens Teachers are overjoyed at the thought of having the Dickens students back again,

filling the institute with their high spirits and laughter. Teaching through Zoom has been a marvellous

experience, one that with no doubt will help teachers a lot in the future

and in some cases will be combining face to face classes and virtual

ones, but nothing substitutes a class with a real teacher and students!

So after a lot of planning on the part of Paty, Manuel, the

Coordinators, and Fabián, and working on both regulations for the

Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education, slowly, carefully and

joyfully, the Dickens will be opening its doors to the students and

public in general. I hope you will all be sharing in this wonderful

comeback and let’s hope everything works well!

On Sunday 7th June Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her official 94th birthday in

Windsor Castle. Due to Co-Vid 19 she wasn’t able to celebrate it in

Buckingham Palace and enjoy the Trooping The Colour Ceremony with her

family. The Trooping the Colour Parade is carried out by her personal troops,

the Household Division with the Queen herself attending in a carriage and

taking the salute. This year there was a smaller display, the Queen watched

the parade by herself and there was no carriage. The Queen seemed very happy though. She may well be to

have reached 94 years and in spectacular health! Let’s hope that by 2021 life will return to normal, for the

Queen’s sake and for our sake as well!

Paty, Manuel, Sofia , Andrea and Teresa and I wish you

and your students the very best and do take care.

NEWSLETTER - JULY 2020 - VOL. 140

Dear All

I hope you and your families are all well and safe.

It is our pleasure to announce and share with you the Winners for the Cambridge

English and Dickens Distinguen Awards Ceremony.

Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we have been forced to cancel the

Award ceremony planned for April of this year, however, this is not stopping us

from announcing the winners and sharing the news with all our Dickens and

Cambridge Assessment English community in Uruguay. Please find the list of

winners attached!

Please do join me in congratulating the winners, for having achieved these

amazing and outstanding results in 2019, their teachers and Heads of Department

for leading them there making sure the Cambridge English standards are

achieved and to their parents for encouraging their children and supporting them

in this learning experience.

In addition to this wonderful piece of news, I would like to add that next year, we

will be holding a double awards ceremony where you and the 2020 winners will

have your dedicated time and awards presented to you as you all deserve. This is

an instance of great celebration and, as such, it can only be postponed but never

completely cancelled!

In the meantime, we would love for your winner - or for you - to send us a brief

video with either the winner's thoughts and reaction to their award, or when you

share the information with the winner/s and their classmates to upload on the

Dickens social media. Please make sure you have the students' and families'

consent.--

Looking forward to seeing you all soon and keep on working hard towards

the 2020 Awards Ceremony!

All the best

NEWSLETTER - JUNE 2019 - VOL. 136

HINTS ON THE ORAL EVALUATIONS

Total timing: +/- 8 minutes - Total parts: 2

We expect Children III / Juniors II students to speak freely about one of the following topics:

My favourite place in Uruguay My last birthday / A birthday I enjoyed An important person in my life My favourite free time activity or activities

Ask students to bring photos or drawings to illustrate what they are going to talk about. They should produce a project on a soft piece of cardboard, powerpoint presentation or they can bring an object instead if they feel like it. Remember that the students are not expected to recite a text by heart but to hold a communicative and natural conversation with the examiner. It would be great if the students were able to ask questions to the examiner as well.

Students are presented with a picture or a set of pictures. They might be asked to describe the scene, or the sequence using different verb tenses according to the instructions. For example, if the picture shows a girl in different moments of her day, the examiner might say “This is Lucy. This is what she does on a typical day, tell me about her routine.” If the examiner wanted to test simple past, he might say “This is Lucy. Tell me about what she did yesterday.” Similarly, the examiner might ask the student to talk about Lucy’s plans for the weekend, for example. In order to obtain a more complete sample of the candidate’s language, the examiner can also ask further questions such as:

Where is/was Lucy?

What’s the weather like?

How many (animals) can you see?

What is she doing/eating/wearing/etc. in this picture?

Where’s the (book)?

What colour is the (sofa)?

Has Lucy got short or long hair?

Is Lucy taller than her friend?

Look at this picture, where did she go after school?

PART 1 - Presentation of the TOPIC: about 4 minutes.

PART 2 – Picture description: about 4 minutes.

New Happy Earth 2 / Today 2 / Wider World 1

Make sure you provide students with plenty of practice in describing pictures. Remind them of the importance of listening carefully to the examiner’s instructions and questions so as to know what verb tense to use in their answers (e.g. What did Lucy do yesterday? or What does Lucy do every day?). Students should also practise the use of connectors and sequencers such as First, Then, After that and Finally.

Dear Colleague

Hope this email finds you well and eager to continue planning your year ahead. With this in mind, we are sharing the dates and fees for the Cambridge English exams for the second semester.

I am sure most of you have already heard of the flexible dates calendar that Cambridge English has come up with this year in order to cater for and adapt to the different needs around the globe and to suit each country depending on the stage of the Covid-19 pandemic that they are in.

You will find exam dates for September and October as well as the November and December dates published earlier this year. On top of that, as Dickens is set to make sure students can still achieve their academic goals, which they have been working so hard to obtain, more options to the November and December dates have been added making the most of this flexible dates calendar. In order to make sure we comply with social distancing and the safety of everyone involved in the exams, it is important that you choose your dates well in advance as places may be limited.

Please remember you can find all this information on the Dickens website https://www.dickens.edu.uy/examenes-internacionales as well as:

1. regulations and Notice to candidates,

2. the sanitation protocol,

3. a video on what to expect on the exam day

4. entry form

5. ways of making entries (procedure and bank account information)

6. Dates for the Confirmation of Entry despatch

I am sure you will find the flexible dates calendar a great initiative to offer to your students and help them achieve their goals in a safe environment. After these past months of uncertainty and instability, it is great to be able to offer your students with so many options!

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like further details or information on this or any other concern you may have.

NEWSLETTER - JULY 2020 - VOL. 140

Dear Colleague

Hope you are well.

I am well aware you were all too eager to receive this communication and I would like to start by saying that Trinity College London and Dickens Institute have agreed to freeze the fees to the 2019 fees. I am sure this resolution will be most welcomed and appreciated by everyone involved. You can find the fees and enrolment period attached to this email and in our webpage https://www.dickens.edu.uy/examenes-internacionales/

As you may already know, travelling bans and flight restrictions still apply all over the globe, so due to the global health crisis, which has forced us all to come up with more creative and adaptable solutions to be able to fit in and continue to offer our students the same goals as we would have under our before Covid-19 teaching situation, the exam itself has also had to be adapted to fit in in these circumstances, therefore, this year, the Trinity exams will be offered online.

The digital alternative assessment arrangements for GESE and ISE speaking and listening exams are an interim digital alternative assessment solution for delivering GESE and ISE speaking and listening exams during this time.

We know that candidates have been developing their English language skills to prepare for their exams so, in response to the situation created by COVID-19, we strongly believe that this interim digital alternative method of offering GESE and ISE speaking and listening exams is a great option to still show the academic goals have been achieved, in spite of the setbacks and challenges you and your students were presented with this year.

Candidates will now be able to take their one-to-one assessment online with an experienced Trinity examiner via video conference in registered exam centres. Further details on this will be sent shortly.

Same exam, different delivery.

Although the method of delivery will be different, please rest assured that the content and skills assessed for both the GESE and ISE speaking and listening exams online are the same as for the standard format exams. Results and certificates will continue to be issued in line with Trinity's existing processes for exams leading to fully regulated qualifications that adhere to Trinity's rigorous standards of assessment.

If you have any queries regarding this or any other matter or would simply like to discuss this further, please do contact me.

Many thanks

Kind regards

Monica Leon International Examinations Department Manager

LOOKING FOR ACTIVITIES TO MOTIVATE YOUNG

LEARNERS AND TEENS? The World Wide Web offers a plethora of activities, but it takes a lot of time to choose good ‘tried and tested’ ones. We have selected some for you. Hope you find them useful!

Adapted from www.pavpub.com

KEYWORD COMICS Put a list of about 10 keywords on the board. These can be important vocabulary items from previous classes that you want your students to remember. Put the students in pairs and ask them to create a short story integrating any five of the keywords. Ask them to create their story in a text or multimedia comic tool, and to share their finished work with the class. The other class members then read/watch the comics and try to spot the five keywords. Try this site - https://www.makebeliefscomix.com – Students will love it!

CREATE A TEN-SECOND VIDEO Assign each student a topic that you have studied in class. For homework, ask the students to use their mobile phones to create a 10-second video that reflects their topic. You can ask students to include an audio commentary while they film (in ten seconds, this is likely to consist mainly of keywords or very short phrases). Alternatively, their videos can be silent or have background music. Share each student’s video in a subsequent class and ask the other students to try and identify the topic of each video. Try this site - http://screencast-o-matic.com/home

INVENT GRAFFITI BACK STORIES Several days before the lesson, ask students to take a photo of some street art or graffiti in the town where they live. In class, get students into pairs or small groups, and ask them to compare pictures. Ask Who was the artist? What did they draw/write? Why do you think they did it? What do you think happened as a result? Ask students to invent a back story for every picture. Display the pictures and get students to write or tell their back stories to the rest of the group.

GUESS WHAT’S IN MY BOX Give the children a reason to listen to the story by appealing to their curiosity. Put a few objects related to the story in a box. Wrap the box in colourful wrapping paper and take it into class. Let the children touch and shake the box without opening it to guess what’s inside. After a few guesses, invite different children to open it, take out an object and show it to the class. To re-use the box, make sure that the lid can open without the children having to tear the wrapping paper. Alternatively, let a child tear the wrapping paper as if it were a present. As the child shows the class an object, teach and drill any vocabulary that they don’t know. Then tell them that they’ll be hearing a story about the objects in the box and ask them to clap their hands or click their fingers each time one of the objects in the box is mentioned in the story.

FLY SWATTER GAME Begin by presenting and drilling a vocabulary set. Then display relevant flashcards on the board or on a wall in the classroom. Divide the children into two teams and choose a player from each team to stand at a set distance from the flashcards. Choose one representative for each group and give each one a plastic fly swatter. Say one word at a time. The quickest player to swat the corresponding flashcard earns a point. The winning team is the team with the highest score. To make the game even more challenging, speed up the rhythm at which you say the words. If you can’t get hold of fly swatters, get the children to swat the flashcards with their hands.

DESARROLLO COGNITIVO
