Letter from President

Dear EWI Members,

I recently had the good fortune to attend the graduation ceremony of the Masters of Divinity, the Seminarians that are finishing their years of study to become a priest. It just so happened, that Dr. Mary Meehan, soon to be retiring President of Alverno College, gave the commencement speech. Following

graduation, I had the opportunity to wish Mary well and to tell her what a wonderful EWI event we had at Alverno with Adjunct Professor Kathleen Kaufelt, being our keynote speaker.

Meehan spoke to the graduates about having a Moral Bucket List. I was very intrigued by her comments and wanted to share some of her thoughts with you.

Have you ever met a person that just radiates that inner light or glow? The type of person who just seems to be deeply good, listens well, and knows just what to say to make you feel valued? You can generally find these people helping others and as they do so, their manner is infused with gratitude. When you meet such a person, doesn’t it just brighten your whole day?

As we set goals for ourselves to develop new skills and achieve success, do we ever think about our moral aspirations? There are basically two sets of virtues: the resume virtues and the eulogy virtues. The resume virtues are the skills we bring to the marketplace. The eulogy virtues are the ones that we hope are spoken at our funeral – whether we were kind, brave, honest, faithful or whether we were that person who really cared and made a difference.

We all know that the eulogy virtues are much more important than the resume virtues. Yet, our culture and our education

systems spend much more time teaching the skills and strategies needed for career success, than the qualities needed to radiate that sort of inner light. Many of us are much clearer on how to build an external career than we are on how to build inner character.

Our ASIST candidates seemed to radiate that “inner glow/gratitude” as did Kathleen Kaufelt, our keynote speaker. I was really excited to be providing these women scholarships! Why? Because each had a very different story; and yet each one of them was humbled and grateful to be among our membership. Each of them had a need for the scholarship money, but it was their expression of gratitude that centered around the experience that evening. A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who helped make the ASIST Scholarship Event a success – the details were evident each step of the way!

Our June Potluck Meeting on June 7th, will be casual – if you haven’t signed up for your “signature dish” please follow the link that Tina Braley sent out or by clicking on the link provided in our monthly invitation. Please invite a friend or two that might like to learn a bit more about EWI. It’s the one meeting that we do not charge non-members dinner fees, so let’s plan to fill the venue! Our very own Debra May, Life Coach specializing in women’s empowerment and mindset, will help us increase our clarity through the 3 G’s (Gratitude, Greatness & Growth). Hope you can join us!

Gratefully serving,

Cindy Kunze, 2015 – 2016 President

Thank you for attending May’s meeting

at Alverno College

Our ASIST Scholarship Program Was So Precious!!

An inspiring and memorable ASIST program was held at the May 3 membership meeting at Alverno

College. We received 32 applications that were reviewed by our judges who gave considerable time to

evaluating the scholarship applications. The judges then had the difficult task of narrowing the field

and selecting three applicants to receive scholarships. We celebrated those three very deserving

scholarship recipients who each shared a story of struggles and challenges but all had the same hopes,

goals and aspirations to become successful women. The recipients; Celestina, Sarah and Veronica

were excited, humbled and grateful to be honored at the meeting and at the end of the evening I think

we all walked away with a little humility as well.

1st Place $3,000 scholarship - Celestina Passo, student at Gateway Technical College

2nd Place $2,000 scholarship - Sarah Dill, student at University of Wisconsin Milwaukee

3rd Place $1,000 scholarship - Veronica Peoples, student at University of Wisconsin Milwaukee

The keynote speaker was Dr. Kathleen Kaufelt, Adjunct Professor of Social Science in Behavioral

Sciences Division at Alverno College. She delivered a close to her heart message on the journey of

non-traditional students, her work at the Milwaukee Rescue Mission and the importance of having a

“devotion” in your life as she does with her homeless friend Albert.

Thank you for the dedication and decision making of our three judges:

Candy Walton, Sr. Director of Development & Campaign, Zoological Society of Milwaukee

Attorney Brenda Lewison, Associate at Arthur Heitzer Law Offices

Annemarie Scobey-Polachek, Dir. Corp Programs Public Affairs, Diversity & Inclusion at

Johnson Controls, Inc.

Last, but certainly not least, KUDOS to the hard work of Rachel and the ASIST committee for putting

together a flawless event.

Hug, kiss and love your family every moment that you have!! It’s a miracle I didn’t lose my son this week. While doing 75 mph on the expressway in heavy traffic, he hit a low-flying wild turkey. 10 Interview Tips For Hiring Managers

Published April 18, 2016

One of the most important aspects of job interviews is being prepared. However, many hiring managers start

job interviews without proper preparation and as a result make expensive hiring mistakes. This article

discusses ten interview tips that will help to achieve effective face-to-face job interviews.

1. Candidate Screening. Prior to face-to-face interviews, Candidates should be carefully screened for job

requirements, experience, past performance, job tenure and cultural fit, in order to use your time and theirs

efficiently. Screening includes evaluating resumes and applications and at least two or three telephone

interviews.

2. The Job Description that you use should include job requirements that have been demonstrated to

correlate with success for the job and your company, rather than based on anecdotal information. Include

“soft” job requirements, i.e. attitude, behavior, professionalism, courtesy, appropriate dress, enthusiasm, and

energy.

3. Prepare a list of open ended questions, including at least one question relating to each job requirement.

After Candidates answer each question, ask probing, follow-up questions, in order to test the accuracy and

completeness of their answers. Follow-up questions can be as simple as “why” or “tell me more”. Check

each question as you ask it, to avoid skipping or duplicating one.

4. Prepare a score card that includes the questions in one column, a column for numerical scores, i.e. 1 – 5,

and a place for the total score. All interviewers should complete score cards for all Candidates. This will

provide an objective method to measure and rank Candidates, rather than relying on subjective assessments.

5. Have two or more interviewers. One interviewer should ask questions and the other(s) should take notes.

If one of the interviewers is comfortable taking notes in addition to asking questions, that is even better.

Hold post-interview meetings during which interviewers share impressions and discuss Candidates’

strengths and weaknesses. These discussions may lead to score card revisions. Record minutes of these

sessions.

Page 15: Letter from President 2015-2016 - EWI of Milwaukee€¦ · than the resume virtues. Yet, our culture and our education MILWAUKEE CHAPTER EDITION 2015-2016 Officers & Directors President

June 2016

6. Conduct multiple interviews. Subsequent to each round of interviews, prepare a list of Candidates who

will be invited back for additional interviews. Don’t lead Candidates. For example, if interviewing Sales

Reps, ask how they pursue an opportunity, rather than asking which sales process they use. If you don’t agree

with something that Candidates say, tell them and determine their reaction. Do they moderate their statement

or support it?

7. Past performance is the best indicator of future performance. Discuss Candidates’ performance in all

prior jobs, or at least in the last three jobs. Ask all questions in the past tense, i.e. “what did you do about”,

rather than “what would you do about”? Discuss why Candidates left prior jobs, relationships with

supervisors, successes and challenges, and likes and dislikes. This discussion will be very helpful in

determining whether Candidates will succeed in the job and with your company.

8. Describe the job and your organization candidly, including the challenges as well as the rewards. Doing

so may result in some Candidates withdrawing, but these are Candidates who probably would not be a fit.

9. Always be “interviewing”, even if you don’t have any open positions. Evaluate people at meetings, trade

shows, on airplanes, or in social settings as possible hires. If you identify potential Candidates and you don’t

have open positions for them, explain that you may be interested in hiring them, but you don’t have an

opening at present. Maintain relationships with them until you do.

10. Decline Candidates who do not meet all of your key requirements, rather than continuing to evaluate

Candidates who meet some of them. This may result in more interviews than you anticipated, however,

recruiting, like fishing, requires patience.

Interviewing is an important management skill. Take the time to learn to be a great interviewer.

Do more than belong: participate.

Do more than care: help.

Do more than believe: practice.

Do more than be fair: be kind.

Do more than forgive: forget.

Do more than dream: work.

--William Arthur Ward

5 Universal Truths Successful Leaders Live By By Jared Brox on February 29, 2016 in Emerging Leaders, Executive Insights, Inspiration and Motivation

In a Gallup survey of more than 7,200 adults, nearly half of the participants admitted they have left a job to

get away from their manager. It’s an unsettling statistic and one that really begins to scratch the surface of

the impact that leadership—good and bad—can have on a company, its people, and overall success.

Poor leadership can be an incredibly destructive force, and, as some studies have suggested, may even be

contagious. From productivity and engagement levels to how they react in challenging situations, employees

often take behavioral cues from their leaders. So, it’s imperative for people in leadership roles to be aware of

the message they’re sending to their teams.

Great leadership has the power to unite, energize, and propel a company forward. The most successful

leaders are the ones who take this tremendous responsibility seriously. And though the characteristics that

make a great leader may vary from person to person, there are a few universal truths that always ring true.

Driven by passion.

“You have to be burning with an idea, or a problem, or a wrong that you want to right. If you’re not

passionate enough from the start, you’ll never stick it out.” – Steve Jobs

The most successful leaders are motivated by something much deeper than simply earning a paycheck or

getting the next promotion. Passion is a powerful force that drives leadership-minded people to succeed.

They truly believe in what they are doing and feel it is their personal mission to achieve their goals. Every

endeavor is a personal investment of their time and commitment—a responsibility taken lightly.

Never finished learning.

“Wisdom is not a product of schooling, but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it.” – Albert Einstein

Great leaders also have an insatiable thirst for knowledge and will seek out learning opportunities

throughout their careers that will help hone their skills and add to their arsenal of leadership tools. Whether

those learning opportunities come from resounding success or cataclysmic failure, leaders are adept at

taking a lesson to heart and applying it to future endeavors.

Integrity is everything.

“Real integrity is doing the right thing, knowing that nobody’s going to know whether you did it or not.” –

Oprah Winfrey

Trust is essential to effective leadership, and you don’t earn trust without integrity. From following through

on your commitments, no matter how small to standing up in the face of adversity on behalf of the people

you lead, integrity is built on actions. There’s no place for a “do as I say, not as I do” mentality. Integrity

means setting the example others will follow.

People are your greatest asset.

“Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all

about growing others.” – Jack Welch

Just as important as growing and developing their own skills and expertise, great leaders constantly

advocate on behalf of the people they lead. Leaders know they can only get so far on their own without a

dedicated team ready to follow them into battle. Empower the people around you to achieve and you’ll be

rewarded with their unwavering commitment to success.

You have to be courageous.

“Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. The fearful are caught as often as the

bold.” – Helen Keller

Great leaders aren’t afraid to ask for what they want and won’t easily back down from a challenge. Courage is

an important part of leading a team that extends far beyond confidently charging toward a goal. It also plays

an important psychological role among their teams. People will look toward their leaders for cues on how to

act and react in difficult situations. A leader who is projecting confidence and courage will instill those same

characteristics into the people they lead.

Think about some of the most important leaders in your life and how they expressed

these truths in their daily lives. How did their passion affect your performance? How

did their integrity inspire the kind of leader you have become today? And what are

some of the most courageous actions they’ve taken in order to succeed? The impact a

great leader makes on the people around them has a ripple effect that extends beyond

their immediate surroundings.
