Taking PAC to the People by Ed Youngblood, Coping with Dementia, LLC

Recently, during a dinnermeeting with DebbieSelsavage and Ed Youngbloodfollowing one of her workshopsin Sarasota, Florida, dementiaexpert Teepa Snow said, "Idon't know anyone else whohas done what you are doingwith my Positive Approach toCare (PAC) training. No oneelse has formed a company tomarket this concept to the public." Typically, those trainedby Teepa are affiliated with health care corporations wherethey apply PAC to their internal training curricula. Debbie Selsavage learned about dementia the hard way;by caring for her husband Albert who died in 2010. Sheremembers it as a horrific experience with one AssistedLiving Facility after another refusing to care for himbecause he was "combative." Selsavage recalls, "He was agentle man, and I was baffled by how quickly his behaviorchanged under professional care. He was kicked out ofthree ALFs and on one occasion [involuntarily committed]and put in four-point restraints. He came back from thatone battered and bruised."

Meditation is a mind-body practice and in simple terms, itmeans being aware and focusing our attention.Mindfulness is the ability to be present and not overlyreactive to what is going on around us. Mindfulness can becultivated by meditation and is a muscle that gets strongerthe more we use it and exercise it. The great thing aboutmeditation is that anyone can do it regardless of age, andthere are many books, apps, or classes available to help aperson learn.

anyone. Bringing children andelders together can provideendless opportunities forcreating moments of joy andmutual engagement. With alittle planning, you can set thestage for fun, meaningfulactivities that support thestrengths and abilities ofindividuals with dementia whilegrowing compassion in children. When I look back at caregiving with my mother-in-law, wholived for many years with dementia and died fromdementia, I remember both tough times and joyful times. The toughest times hurt and made me feel sad. Thesadness stemmed from the loss and grief that I wasfeeling. The joyful times lifted my spirits and made me feelhappy. The happiness stemmed from loving interactionsand moments of connection. People with dementiaexperience these same feelings for the very same reasons. It is important to note, that individuals with dementia areable to feel sadness and happiness longer than they areable to remember what caused the feeling.
