for 21st Century Learners?

Ryan Clarke

Characteristics of Effective Presentations

• The goal of your presentation is to inform your audience. • Don’t sidetrack or confuse your audience with unnecessary information.• Make sure your presentation, visual aids, etc. follow a logical sequence.

• Begin your presentation with an outline of what to expect. • Finish with a conclusive summary, providing your audience with the sense you’ve come full circle.

Consistency

•For example, this presentation will cover:- Consistency- Simplicity- Graphs / Visuals- Engage- Know your audience- Big

• Use technology sparingly and effectively to make a point. • You want your audience to remember the content of your research, not the amount of thought put into different presentation effects.

Simplicity

• Avoid distracting items such as generic clipart. It doesn’t make your presentation more effective.

Know Your Audience:

• Who is your presentation for? • Are they familiar with the topic? How much detail will they need?• Unlike a research paper, a presentation must be concise. Don’t cover everything.• What information will you use? What will you eliminate?

Engage• Find ways to make your presentation interesting and engaging to the audience •Move away from empty, generic input, and find the specific needs of the audience•Use visual aids•Ask for feedback. Make it interactive

Turn this... ...into this!

Graphs / Visuals

• Most people will retain more from a presentation if they are presented with a visual representation of the material being covered.• It grabs the attention of the audience more effectively, especially when dealing with statistics and numbers.

•For example, you could say that there are 3.7 million people in Alberta, compared to a total Canadian population of 34 million.

You could make a visual representation:

OR

Alberta, 3.7

Cananda, 30.3

• You should allow everyone in the audience to be able to see your visual aids.

Make it BIG!

Less Effective…

MORE EFFECTIVE!
