“Notes” from Phil & Amy Today’s scripture and liturgy is all about our “Faith” lives. I love reading and listening to Bishop Robert Barron, Matthew Kelly, Dr. Tim Gray, Dr. Mary Healy, John Shea, all audio compact discs in my car for longer drives. I also read the Paulist Press Ordo, OCP’s Today’s Liturgy and various liturgical planners, a Living with Christ, comments in our World Library Publication’s Seasonal Missalette; they all aim toward the celebration of our Eucharist – daily and Sunday to Sunday.

Today we hear about the desperate blind man Bartimaeus on the side of the road. Something in common that all these authors and publications will point out is that “in spiritual traditions blindness is the inability to notice, understand, and integrate the spiritual dimension of life. “We are all beggars, not for food, but for a spiritual life.” In today’s Gospel from Mark, Jesus’ healing of the blind man who tosses his cloak aside, witnesses to the inauguration of the kingdom. That’s deep! That’s heaven and all our journeys in life to get there, and that is our life of “faith”. You have to take time in your life to know and figure out where it is that you want to go. Persistent Bartimaeus knew and kept calling out for Jesus. It’s important then to know the Old Testament’s story of Israel and Jacob, to be able to connect with Jesus’ life in the New Testament and the Gospels. The Ordo for the celebration of the Eucharist says an “oracle of consolation” regarding the restoration of Israel finds its fulfillment in the person of Jesus, our merciful high priest. We have to know our Catholic story (as Dr. Tim Gray always reminds listeners) and understand not only Jesus the King, but His Kingdom as well. A big key is knowing that the Life of Jesus is about bringing forth the (His) kingdom and knowing that the kingdom has always been the temple, the church, the people. It’s so interesting that at this past (Tuesday) morning’s mass Fr. Mike Olson mentioned how the word “parishioners” stemmed from the word “pilgrimage”. Pilgrimage points us directly to our true “home” destination, heaven. Our homes and our neighborhoods are temporary and we go out in pilgrimage to our true destination of heaven. So every journey to church in a sense is a pilgrimage to our true and eternal home, and our church is where divinity and humanity come together. Today we reflect on how many of us cling to things that interferes with getting closer to God and we wear them like a cloak. Today the miraculous key that Jesus identified is faith.

Do we have the courage to fling off our cloak? It is that simple – faith can help us find the way when we are blinded by confusion over what is important. Faith will save us. Faith takes away a distance from God. A little thought from Children’s Liturgy of the Word…Our coming together for Church, and participating in the liturgy, builds up our faith by inspiring us to know and love God. Who is the God we worship? Why do we worship him? Have a Blessed Week, Phil & Amy P.S. Thank you, parishioners and ministries so much for the support towards our daughter Lucie’s December/January “Supply and Multiply Mission Trip to Montrouis, Haiti,” along with her fellow traveler Jillian Moss from St. Damian Parish. Please continue to keep them in your prayers for a safe and fulfilling mission.

Here’s a preview of All Saints and next Sunday’s Scripture…All Saints…

The First Reading from Revelations 7: I saw an immense crowd, beyond hope of counting, of people from every nation, race, tribe and language. The Responsorial Psalm 24: Lord, this is the people that long to see your face. The Second Reading from 1 John 3: We shall see God as he really is. And the Gospel from Mark 5: “Rejoice and be glad for your reward will be great in heaven.” Upon seeing the crowd, Jesus goes up the hill and begins to teach them through the words of the beatitudes. Sunday, November 4th…The First Reading from Deuteronomy 6: “Hear Israel, you shall love the Lord with all your heart.” Moses spoke to the people, calling for them to keep the commandments and to love the Lord God completely. The Responsorial Psalm 18: I love you Lord, my strength. The Second Reading from Hebrews 7: Because he remains forever his is an eternal priesthood. And the Gospel from Mark 12: This is the first commandment and the second is similar to it.

World Mission Sunday Thank you

Thank you for your generous response to the collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith last weekend on World Mission Sunday. Our Parish raised $285.00 in support of communities of faith in some of the most economically disadvantaged regions of our world. Your gifts and prayers contribute to the ongoing effort of the universal Church in service and authentic global solidarity. As Pope Francis has said, “The Christian faith remains ever young when it is open to the mission that Christ entrusts to us: Mission revitalizes faith.”

Bulletin Submissions If your parish group or ministry would like to submit a bulletin article, please send your submissions to the parish office to the following email address: [email protected]. The deadline for submissions is the previous Monday prior to the bulletins publication date. Example: If you wanted an article submitted to the November 4, bulletin, it should have been emailed or brought to the office by Monday, October 22. Especially when there are early bulletin deadlines due to the holidays, it is important to have articles in a timely manner. This allows for editing and transmission on our scheduled due date to our publisher.

St. Emeric Parish Website For several months, the parish office has been working on our new website, http://stemeric.weconnect.com, with our web host Liturgical Publications, Inc. (LPi) There have been some glitches, the system was down, and some were not able to logon. We were advised that the website had been down due to technical issues. We’ve been assured by our web host that the system is now working. The new website will allow you to log on by creating a password that will allow you to see the weekly bulletins that have been uploaded, on the “Bulletins” page, and also to see parish events, on the “Events” page. Eventually, upcoming “News” and “Photos” will also be uploaded. We are also considering on-line giving. The web site is a work in progress and eventually you’ll be able to access the web site using the mobile app. The web site address has been on the front of our bulletin. Take a look. Fr. Edmond Gratitude is Contagious Thank the Lord when trouble comes, His love and grace expressing; Grateful praise will strengthen faith, Turn trials into blessing, — DCE

An attitude of gratitude can make your life a beatitude.

Treasures from Our Tradition Today is the feast of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales, the first representative body of many Catholics who died for their faith between 1535 and 1679 to be beatified or canonized. Almost all of them died at Tyburn, a place of public execution near today’s Marble Arch in Hyde Park, London. The first to suffer were Carthusian monks who refused to swear an oath supporting Henry VIII as supreme head of the Church in England, and the last was Saint Oliver Plunkett, the Primate Archbishop of Ireland. The method of execution was particularly vile, since the condemned were hanged and their living bodies quartered to be displayed around London as a horrific warning. Today, the tree-like gallows provides the design of a religious symbol, the canopy over the altar of the martyrs in Tyburn Convent. There, at the heart of the bustling city, a monastic community of women practices contemplative prayer and “spiritual hospitality” in the Benedictine tradition. Oddly, the community is French in origin; it was expelled from France a century ago when France outlawed contemplative monastic life. England, where the laws against Catholicism had been lifted, invited the community in. In gratitude to their new homeland, and in honor of those who gave their lives for the Catholic faith, the nuns came to Tyburn. In the public crypt, coats of arms stand for each of the 350 martyrs.
