    S. Danielle Radford Geometry Lesson Plan 1

Introductiony Lesson Topic: Hunting for Shapesy 2 periods of 60 minutes eachy VA Standards of Learning Math2.16 The student will identify, describe, compare, and contrast plane and solid geometric

    figures (circle/sphere, square/cube, and rectangle/rectangular prism).

    Cognitive Objectives

    Students will:

y Identify, describe, compare, and contrast shapes found around school.y Create a group slideshow with photos taken around school of ordinary objects that depict

    spheres, cubes, and rectangular prisms.

Materials/Technology and Advanced PreparationDigital Camera (one for each small group if possible)

Computer and projector for slide show preparationSlideshow example http://www.slideshare.net/sdradford/name-that-shape-8552428

    Sphere

Teaching and Learning Sequence Day 1Introduction/Anticipatory Set

y Call students attention to preselected objects in the room.y Ask students what they are. Cube, Rectangular Prism, Sphere

    Lesson Development

y Ask students to make observations about the shapes while passing the objects around toall students.

y Ask students if these objects remind them of other objects they have seen.y Point out the features of each geometric shape-faces, edges, and vertices.y Ask students how these objects differ from squares, circles, and rectangles.y Divide students into small groups.y Prepare each group for centers, pointing to the available centers.

y Explain to students that they are going on a hunt for shapes when it is their turn for thecamera center.

y During the camera center, explain that each group will be given an area either in theclassroom or somewhere else around the school to take pictures of objects that look like

the shapessphere, cube, and rectangular prism. Groups should take multiple photos of

    each shape if possible.

y Explain that when the picture taking is completed (up to 10 minutes if needed), studentswill go to the computer to transfer their photos for the class slideshow.

y Show students the prepared slideshow for an example.y Dismiss groups to their assigned areas.y Walk amongst the groups to help as needed, especially at the computer when groups are

transferring photos and selecting the best ones.

    Closure

y Ask students which shapes were easy to find and which shapes were hard to find.y Ask if students found any interesting shapes that were not already mentioned.y Explain that students will finish the photo selection process during the next math class

    and complete the slideshow presentation.

    Assessment

Formative-Teacher will observe students during the class discussion, looking for shape

recognition and meaningful contributions. The teacher will ask questions during small group

work to check for shape and features recognition. Anecdotal notes will be taken.

Summative-Students will present photos of shapes during the class slideshow and name the

shapes. Teacher will note which shapes are accurately presented and which shapes are not.
