OutcomeGenerate random numbers - each pick from an
activity. Example from the card-picking activity the random numbers are 1-5.

Learning TargetI can investigate random numbers: and to use number cards to generate random numbers with in a given range.

Math Message Follow-upEach number generated is an OUTCOME.We had 5 possible Outcomes for this scenario…1,2,3,4,5Therefore each pick Generates Random Numbers 1-5A number produced by a random scenario is a Random
Number Therefore a number that has the same chance of appearing
as any other number, cannot be predicted, and there is no pattern is a Random Number
So… each of the 5 numbers has about 1 out of 5, of being picked

More Math Message Follow-upWe know the ratio is 1 out of 5 or 1
5Now to figure out the percent use this formula number of favorable outcomes = unknown percent
number of possible outcomes total percent (100)1 = n
5 100Cross multiply 1 X 100 and 5 X n100 = 5n (look familiar? This is an equation.)Divide both sides by 5n = 20 or 20%

DefinitionsOutcome: any number generated in an activity. Example:
There are five possible outcomes for this card-picking activity-the numbers 1,2,3,4,5.
Generate random numbers: each pick from an activity. Example from the card-picking activity the random numbers are 1-5.
Random number: a number produced by a random experiment, such as rolling a fair or spinning a spinner. For example, rolling a fair die produces random numbers because each of the six possible numbers 1,2,3,4,5,6, has the same change of coming up.
