• Education: NUS Honours Degree in chemistry

• Profile: She was adopted at birth by an older woman who was a gambler. Her ‘grandma’ lost the house they were staying when she was three. But she didn’t give up her studies.

• Today, her company sells water filters and treatment chemicals system.

• Vision: With only $20,000 capital, she started the company and it became the first water treatment company to be listed on Singapore Exchange.

• Success: In 2012, the company made revenues of S$680 million

• Profile: He was detained and confined under the Internal Security Act for writing pro-communist articles in Far Eastern Economic Review.

• He is Executive Chairman of Banyan Tree which develops resorts and spas. He is sits on many boards including the board of trustees for SMU (Singapore Management University)

• Success: He created a successful holiday resort from an abandoned tin mine.

• Profile: She was a young punk and a rebellious teenager who consistently failed in school. She identified a gap in the market for affordable and trendy street-wear, she opened her first retail outlet in Far East Plaza in 1988.

• She is a leader in social entrepreneurship focusing on youth.

• Success: In 2004, her company opened a cutting-edge underground shopping complex at Xidan Cultural Square, Beijing, China.

• Vision: Establish Singapore as the largest exporter of ornamental fish in the world.

• Success: His company had sales of SGD 91 million in 2010

• Power: Jokingly attributed Amazon.com’s success “half to good timing, half to luck, and the rest to brains”. A resourceful problem-solver, he focused on customer service and built his own success, one book at a time.

• Vision: Recognized a market need for an easy-to-use, online retail site and, in 1994, launched Amazon.com.

• Success: Amazon.com sells more than 20 million products, with a profit of $6 billion.

• Profile: Property tycoon. His company Far East Organization which also own one of the country’s most popular beverage brand Yeo Hiap Seng.

• Power: He had a failed business, a provision shop but he went on to develop many properties along and near Orchard Road.

• Vision: He developed properties in Orchard Road where people don’t want to live in at that time.

• Success: He was the richest man in Singapore when he died in 2010.
