Extra assistance Early multiplication strategies begin with adding equal groups—repeated addition, eg 3 + 3 + 3 + 3. This strategy can also be used for arrays by adding the rows. The next step should be skip counting the rows in the array to find the total, eg 3, 6, 9, 12. This strategy can be used on a number line or hundred chart as well. Eventually students could be skip counting in their heads to calculate the answer to a multiplication sum, as a step before learning their times tables.
