As a church, we are asked to take care of each other. Barnabas and many others did this as we can see from this lesson from Acts 2. Barnabas took the money he made to the leaders and said, “Take this money. Share it with people who need it.” He wanted to do what was right. He loved Jesus and showed this love by taking care of the poor. This was encouraging! Have you ever noticed the plate/basket being passed around during worship? What do people put in there? Money! Why do you think they do this? They do this because they love the Lord and want to give what they have to help others. This money helps take care of a lot of people and a lot of things! In class this morning, we discussed Acts chapter 2 and how the members of the church gave as each had need. We specifically talked about Barnabas and how he was an encouragement through his giving. This week, please discuss the act of working/giving with your child, and ask them to perform various chores for money. On Wednesday, we will be taking up a special collection of their hard earned money to meet the needs of others. Please send whatever they have decided to give with them in a Ziploc bag. Thank you for your help in this matter.

BIBLE TIMEWho did we talk about on Sunday? Barnabas! What does his name mean? “Son of encouragement” What did he do because he loved Jesus? Sold a field and gave the money to the poor.

Barnabas owned a field, but decided to sell it so he could give those who were poorer than him the money.

Barnabas took the money he made to the leaders and said, “Take this money. Share it with people who need it.” He wanted to do what was right. He loved Jesus and showed this love by taking care of the poor. Did you all earn money this week to give to the poor? What did you do? Let’s all get out our money, and count what we have!

Sometimes, it is hard to give up things that we worked hard for, but guess what? God takes care of all our needs, and he uses what we give to take care of the needs of others. What do we need? Can we use this money to give others what they need?

Barnabas sold a field and made a lot of money. I’m sure he really wanted to spend the money on something pretty neat for himself, but he knew they were a better use for it. He gave all the money to the leaders and they used it to help the poor. When we give our money to our church leaders, the elders, they use that money to help the poor! God loves a cheerful giver. Let’s cheerfully give the money we worked to earn to people who need it more than we do.

BIBLE TIMEToday we will be talking about Philip and his conversation with a man form Ethiopia. Do you remember Phillip? He was one of Jesus’ special helpers. What were they called? Apostles! An angel told Philip to leave the town he was in because there was a special man who needed to hear the gospel. The gospel is the story of Jesus’ life, death, burial, and resurrection from the grave. Why did this happen? So all the people of the world can be saved from their sins! Philip found the Ethiopian man reading a scroll in his chariot. This man was a helper to a queen! The scroll said, “He was lead like a lamb to its slaughter.” The Ethiopian man was confused. Who was lead where? Phillip said, “I know the man you are reading about, would you like to hear his story?” The Ethiopian man said yes. Phillip told him how Jesus died to save us from our sins. To receive this salvation, we must believe in Jesus and confess that we are wrong without him, and be baptized in water to be forgiven. The Ethiopian saw some water and said, “Look! Here’s water! What prevents me from being baptized?” With that, Phillip and the Ethiopian went down into the water and the Ethiopian was baptized and became a Christian. He was so happy, and Phillip too! After this took place, Phillip disappeared. The Ethiopian man was so happy. An angel of the Lord sent Phillip to share the gospel with an Ethiopian man. The Ethiopian man was baptized, and became a Christian!

He became a part of God’s family.

After the lesson, give each child four pretzels, and two fruit roll ups. Show them how to wind the ends of the fruit roll ups onto the pretzel sticks to make a scroll. Allow them to eat one for snack, and store the other in their baggy. Help them tape the lesson onto the baggy so they can review it with their family. As you work, remember to go over the lesson with them. Ask simple questions, and remember that this age learns through repetition.

BIBLE TIMEWhat was the name of the man the angel told to go find the Ethiopian? Phillip! What is the message of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection called? The gospel. Phillip was asked to share the gospel with this special man. Where did Phillip fond the man? Philip found the Ethiopian man reading a scroll in his chariot. This man was a helper to a queen! The scroll said, “He was lead like a lamb to its slaughter.” The Ethiopian man was confused. Who was lead where? We too can share the gospel with those we meet simply by telling people that Jesus loves them.

We have a special craft to help us share the message of gospel with friends. It is important that we help people know who Jesus is and what he does for us all!

CRAFT CORNERAfter the lesson, pass out the card stock to the children and help them write, “Jesus loves you” on the paper. After they have done this, help them crinkle up the paper to make it appear old. Once they have finished, give them the coloring sheets to work on so you can hot glue the dowel rods onto the ends of the paper to make it into a scroll. Once glued, give the scrolls to the children, and show them how to fold them. You can help them secure the scrolls by tying a ribbon around them, or can use thick gross grain ribbon and seal it with a wax stamp for added effect.

BIBLE TIMEToday, we will be introduced to a very important man named Saul. Saul was a very important Jewish leader who did not like Christians, or Jesus. He thought he was doing the right thing for having Christians punished for talking about Jesus. Saul did not know Jesus was truly the Son of God! This was sad, but Jesus decided to show him the truth. One day, Saul was walking down the road with his friends when all of a sudden a bright light shone in front of him with a voice saying, “Saul! Why do you persecute me?” Saul said, “Who are you, Lord?” Jesus answered, “I am Jesus! The one you are persecuting! Go to Damascus, I have someone there who will tell you what you need to do.” Ugh oh. Saul was wrong about Jesus! He really was the Son of God. Saul felt so sad and so sorry for being mean to the Christians. He wanted to make it right. When Saul rose from the ground, he noticed he couldn’t see! The light from Jesus blind poor Saul! Saul’s helpers took him to Damascus where he would meet the person who was to help him. This took three days! Could you imagine being blind for three days? Would you be scared? How would you feel? Saul was wrong, but wanted to make things right, and show Jesus he was very sorry for not believing in him.

Was Saul wrong? Yes. He felt really bad. Did he want to make it right? Yes! Did Jesus give Saul a chance to make it right? Yes! He told him to go to Damascus so he could be told what to do. When we are wrong, Jesus helps us make things right.

BIBLE TIMELast week, we talked about a man named Saul and how he didn’t believe that Jesus was the Son of God. Jesus appeared to Saul and blinded him with a strong light. Saul was sorry he was wrong about Jesus and wanted to make it right. Jesus told Saul to go into the town of Damascus to be told how he could make things right.

Remember, Saul was blind, so his friends made the journey with him to find the person who was to help him.

The Lord spoke to a man named Ananias in a vision that Saul would be visiting him. Ananias was scared! He heard about Saul. Saul didn’t like Christians, and Ananias was a Christian! The Lord told him that he chose Saul to help share the gospel of Jesus to everyone.

Ananias found Saul in a house. He said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus who appeared to you also appeared to me and sent me to you so you can have your sight back.” Then, something that looked like scales fell from Saul’s eyes! When his sight came back, he rose and was baptized and became a Christian! Isn’t that neat? Saul once mistreated Christians because he didn’t know Jesus, but once he knew Jesus, and what Jesus did for him, he decided to become a Christian too!

Ananias was afraid of Saul, but Jesus wanted Ananias to help Saul, not be afraid of him. Because of this, Saul got his eyesight back, and became a Christian.

BIBLE TIMELast week, we talked about a man named Saul. God had a very special job for Saul to do after he was baptized. Saul met up with Jesus’s special helpers, the apostles, and began to teach about Jesus. While doing this, his name was changed from Saul to Paul!

One day, Paul found a group of women sitting by a river praying and talking to each other about God. Paul sat down with the women and began to talk to them about Jesus the Savior. He shared with them the gospel. Do you remember what the gospel is? Jesus, the Son of God, came to this earth to save us from sin. He did this by giving himself up on the cross. After his death, he was raised three days later! He won the victory over sin so we can be with him one day forever. To receive the gift he gave, all we have to do is believe in Jesus, confess our wrongs, and be baptized.

A woman named Lydia, who made special purple clothes to sell, believed all that Paul had said. Lydia was thankful for Jesus and loved him very much. After hearing the gospel, she and everyone who lived in her house decided to be baptized! She was so happy about the good news! She asked Paul and the people with him to stay at her house a few days while they were sharing the gospel. Lydia was thankful for Jesus’ gift and began showing her thankfulness right away by opening up her home for others so they could continue to talk about Jesus.

Tonight, you will tie-dye t-shirts with your children. If you feel as if this activity isn’t suitable for your particular class, substitute the tie dye for purple sharpie markers and allow the children to “dye” their shirts with the markers. You can also use non-washable carrel markers, or highlighters. If you are doing the tie-dye project, see the full instructions listed on the next page. Remember, you are also making fun memories, so enjoy this time with your class, and grab a helper or two to assist you and your class. You can even dress up as Lydia herself!

Tie-Dye Instructions(If weather permits, do this activity outside)

1. The day before class, wash the t-shirts in hot water, adding a cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle. Do not dry. Take a wet shirt and lay on a flat surface. Using a fork, start in the middle of the shirt and twist the shirt like you are twisting up spaghetti. The shirt will start to make a folded fan pattern. Keep the twirl going, folding and tucking until you make a tight circle. Secure the circle with multiple rubber bands. (Surf the internet for how to photos on wrapping up the shirts)

2. Once wrapped, place the shirt in a ziplock bag and seal.

3. Before class, prepare your work area. You may want to place a table cloth under the table, and one on the table as well. Have old t-shirts available for the children to wear as smocks, and make sure each child has gloves to put on as well. Follow the instructions on your dye package and mix your dye. Add a 1/4 cup of vinegar to the solution as well. Divide the solution up into the squirt bottles.

4. Take the shirts out of their baggies, and give each child a shirt. Carefully assist them in squirting the dye onto the shirts, making sure they are soaking the shirts well. Make sure they get both sides. Slip the shirts back into the plastic baggies and write the child’s name on each bag, and attach the washing instructions onto it for the parents.

BIBLE TIMEToday we are going to talk more about Paul. Remember how he used to be mean to Christian? He would send some of them to jail for talking about Jesus! Then what happened? He was told the gospel, and he turned from his wrongs and was baptized. He then shared the gospel with all he knew. Who did he share the gospel with last week? Lydia! The seller of purple.

One day, Paul and his helper Silas were put in jail! Paul was in jail! He didn’t mind though, because he knew he was doing what was right. While in jail, Paul and Silas began to sing to God. Would you be singing to God if you were in jail? I would be scared! In the middle of the night, the jail began to crumble and walls began to shake. This happened because of an earthquake. All of the doors of the jail were opened! The chains on Paul and Silas came off! The jailer thought all the prisoners had escaped and was very scared. Paul told the jailer that they all were still there. The jailer was thankful, and took Paul and Silas to his home. Guess what Paul and Silas did? They shared the gospel with the jailer and his family. Guess what the jailer and his family did? They heard the good news and believed in Jesus and were baptized!

God made a bad thing, being in jail for speaking about Jesus, a good thing because the jailer and his whole family believed in Jesus because of Paul and Silas.

Set out toy handcuffs for the children to play with. Before class, make a few paper chains with at least 6 loops each for the children to wear as pretend prison chains. After the lesson, work together to build a few walls with the large building blocks (just making a few towers of blocks will be good). Attach the paper chains to each child’s wrists, and seat them on the ground amongst the blocks. You will have the foam sword and pretend to be the guard. Role play the lesson with your children allowing them to knock over the blocks and break their chains during the “earthquake”.

BIBLE TIMELast week, we talked about how Paul and Silas were put in jail, but later were released. This week, our lesson begins with Paul back in jail! Why do you think Paul was put back in jail? Remember, Paul used to send people to jail for talking about Jesus. Paul was sent to jail again for sharing the gospel. What is the gospel? The story of why Jesus came to earth to save us from our sins.

While Paul was in jail this time, a governor named Festus was in charge of him. A King named Agrippa and his Queen had come to town, and wanted to visit Governor Festus. Festus told King Agrippa about Paul. The King and Queen wanted to meet Paul and hear what he had to say about Jesus! Could you imagine getting to speak to a King and a Queen about Jesus?

The next day, Paul was taken out of jail so he could speak with King Agrippa and the Queen. Paul said, “Jesus is the Son of God, and he lived and died for you and me so we can be forgiven of our sins! Jesus spoke to me in a light, and I became his follower and want to share with others.” Governor Festus said, “Paul! You’re crazy!” Paul answered, “I am not crazy, I am telling the truth. I pray that you will believe.”

King Agrippa and the Queen listened to Paul, and wondered why Paul was in jail. King Agrippa said, “This man is doing nothing to deserve jail or death.”

After he met with the King, he was put onto a ship that was to sail to Rome, still a prisoner.

BIBLE TIMEDo you remember what they put Paul on after he spoke with King Agrippa? They put him on a ship. Was he still a prisoner? Yes. He was. Paul got on a ship that was headed to Rome. He was a little worried about sailing, because he knew it would not be safe. He said, “If we sail now, there will be problems.” The people didn’t listen, and off they went for Rome.

The wind began to blow. Rain began to fall. Under and lighting began to crash! The waves were so big they almost knocked the ship right over. Everyone was scared! Except for Paul. God sent an angel to let him know they would all be taken care of. When morning came, the people saw land and tried to get the ship to it. The big waves pushed the ship onto shallow water and crash! The ship broke apart! Everyone was safe though, just like God had promised. They used the broken pieces to win to the island called Malta.

The people who lived on the island of Malta helped the shipwrecked people. They brought wood to make a fire to dry everyone off. Paul helped carry the wood. He picked some up to throw into the fire and guess what? A BIG poisonous snake jumped from the wood and bit Paul on the hand! This snake was very dangerous the island people said, they thought the snake bit would kill Paul! God didn’t let that happen, the bite did not hurt Paul. The island people were amazed.

Where was Paul’s ship sailing to? Rome. What island did it crash on? Malta! What bit Paul? A snake. Through all of this, God protected Paul.

BIBLE TIMEAfter the ship wreck and snake bite, Paul was able to finally go to Rome. While there, he was a house prisoner, but was later locked in a dungeon. While he was a prisoner in Rome, Paul wrote letters to a young man named Timothy. Paul loved Timothy like a son, and wanted to leave him with good advice on how to keep sharing the gospel story of Jesus. We can read the letter Paul wrote to Timothy in our Bibles! (Show the children the books of Timothy in your Bible) Paul wrote many of the books we find in our New Testament! (Using your Bible chart, read off all of Paul’s letters). Some letters were to churches, some were to certain people, like Timothy, all of them can be found here in God’s word! God helped Paul write all of these letters because God’s plan was to one day have them in this Bible for you and me to have so we can learn about Jesus. God was thinking of us when Paul was writing his letters. Isn’t that neat?

In Paul’s letter to Timothy, he says, “let no one look down on your for being young, be an example to all people.” Timothy was young, but not too young to share the story of Jesus. You are not too young either! Do you remember what the gospel is? The story of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection so we can be saved from our sins. We are not too young to share this with all people! God loves it when we tell others about His one and only Son, Jesus.

BIBLE TIMEOne day, Paul met a man named Onesimus who was in big trouble. He had stolen from the man he worked for, his master, and then ran away! Is it right to take things that do not belong to you? No way! If we need something someone else has, what do we do? We ask politely to use it.

Paul explained to Onesimus that he was wrong, and needed to tell his master, Philemon, he was very sorry. Onesimus knew he was wrong, and wanted to make it better. Paul wrote a letter to Philemon for Onesimus that said,

BIBLE TIMEWe have been talking a lot about Paul and have been able to see how he traveled and met many people to tell them about Jesus. Today, we are going to talk about Peter. Peter was one of Jesus’ special helpers, called an apostle. Peter was traveling around to many places sharing the gospel just like Paul.

One day, a very wonderful woman named Dorcas had died. So many people were very sad about this. She used her talents to serve people who were poor by making them clothes. Everyone was sad. One of Dorcas’ friends heard that Peter, an apostle of Jesus was in town. They thought maybe Peter could help them. They asked him to see Dorcas.

Peter came. Dorcas’ friends took Peter to the room where she was. Peter got down on his knees and prayed to God that Dorcas would come back to life. Could God bring Dorcas back to life? He sure can! Jesus was brought back to life! God has the power to do anything. Peter stood up after his prayer, and said to Dorcas, “Dorcas get up.” Dorcas got up! She was dead! It was a miracle! God allowed Dorcas to be raised from the dead so the people could see His power over death. She was alive! Because of this miracle, many people in the town believed in Jesus as the Son of God!

Dorcas’ friends were shocked, and so happy to see that she was dead, but then was alive! Peter prayed to God, and God brought Dorcas back to life.

BIBLE TIMEDo you remember the name of one of Jesus’ special helpers, who was called an apostle? Peter! Peter was just like Paul and traveled around sharing the gospel of Jesus. Who did Peter help? Dorcas.

BIBLE TIMELast week, we talked about how Peter, one of Jesus’ apostles, prayed for God to bring Dorcas back to life. Today, we are going to talk about how Peter shared the gospel with a solider named Cornelius.

Cornelius tried to serve God, but he did not know about Jesus. God sent an angel to Cornelius saying, “Send for a man named Peter, he will talk to you.” Cornelius sent for Peter. Before the men came to get Peter, he was praying to God. God told Peter that the men were looking for him, and he needed to go with them.

Soon the men came to Peter’s house, and he asked, “Why are you looking for me?” The men told Peter that an angel spoke to Cornelius. The next day, Peter went to meet Cornelius. Peter told Cornelius and his family about Jesus. He shared the gospel! Cornelius was so happy to hear the gospel. He and his whole family believed in Jesus and were baptized by Peter.

Cornelius needed some answers about God, so God sent Peter to help Cornelius understand the story of Jesus.

Cornelius and every one in his house listened to Peter, and were baptized! God takes care of those who look for ways to Jesus.

BIBLE TIMEWhen we talked about Paul, we saw how he was put in jail many times for talking about Jesus. Almost all of Jesus’ apostles were placed in jail several times for sharing the gospel. Today, we will talk about how Peter was in jail, and how he got out.

King Herod put Peter in jail because he did not like him sharing the gospel. Peter was put there to wait for his death! Peter slept in the jail chained up between two guards. Late that night and angel of the Lord came to Peter! The angel said, “Quick! Get up!” Suddenly, the chains fell right off Peter’s wrists! They didn’t need a key to unlock them, they just fell right off! Peter got dressed and followed the angel out of the jail. They walked right out of the prison, past the guards, and the doors to the city were even opened right up for Peter to escape. Once Peter got out of the city, the angel disappeared!

Peter went to the house of people who were locked inside praying for him. They were so surprised to see him there!Peter told them that an angel came to free him. Everyone was happy and praising God for answering their prayers to free Peter.

Peter was about to be put to death for sharing the gospel. His friends prayed to God all night long to let Peter live. God answered the prayers and sent an angel to free Peter!
