A purposeful business that constantly strives to improve

As a business in South Africa we are committed to have a purposeful business with a positive impact in the society we work in. We want to contribute to South Africa’s economic growth and transformation.

We recognize that broad-based empowerment is one of the most meaningful ways to broaden the country’s economic base, and to accelerate growth, job creation and poverty eradication. We are therefore very pleased to announce that Lesedi Nuclear Services have achieved Level 3 BBBEE status, in terms of the Department of Trade and Industry’s BBBEE Codes of Good Practice of 2013. The improvement from level 4 to level 3, means the company has performed well in terms of ownership, management control, employment equity, skills development, supplier and enterprise development as well as socio-economic development.

We constantly strive to be proactive in our approach to transformation in order to contribute meaningfully to broad based empowerment as well as localisation.

We will continue to be committed to Corporate Social Investment initiatives such as the Orion Project in Atlantis, skills development across multiple disciplines and taking part in special community activities on Mandela day. In particular, I am thankful to the teams who worked so hard to make a difference in the communities of Atlantis and Joe Slovo Park as we remembered the legacy of Nelson Mandela on 18 July.

On the business side, we are proud to announce that Lesedi was awarded another Balance of Plant (BOP) Gas Turbine Power Station contract for the Ankerlig Transmission Koeberg Second Supply (ATKSS) Project. This type of project is not new to Lesedi as we have previously done the Balance of Plant at Ankerlig and Gourikwa totalling 14 x 150MW gas turbines for Eskom. Further news is that we recently opened our new Johannesburg office. We are confident that our presence in Johannesburg will continue to grow and it will enable our organisation to better serve our stakeholders in that region. I am proud to be a part of the growth of South Africa and the successes of our company, which is only made possible by the dedication of our people and our teams.

Reactor building FireDetection System (JDT) replacementLesedi together with its foreign consortium partner,DEF (La Détection Electronique Français) are planning to replace Koeberg’s complete fire detection system for bothunits during the next upcoming outages. This modification adds to over 150 modifications at Koeberg that Lesedi has already been involved in for many years.

The new system that will be installed includes replacement of all the detectors (approx. 170 per unit), all the local mimic panels and the installation of new touch screen PCs in each of the main control rooms. The complete installation will be carried out by Lesedi together with the use of a local subcontractor for the electrical and mechanical part of the installation. The commissioning of the new system will be performed by Lesedi with support from DEF.

PTR Tankreplacement projectLesedi together with its local consortium partner,Group Five, are in the process of constructing two tanks which are destined to be installed on the Koeberg Plant on both units during the next upcoming outages in 2018. The construction of these two tanks is taking place on Koeberg site close to their final destination and expected to be completed before the end of 2017. These tanks are used to store borated water which can be used for the Reactor cavity and spent fuel pit cooling system.

The new tanks which will be installed are made out of Duplex UNS S32205 material, a material with a great resistance to stress corrosion cracking. The size of the existing old tanks are 1692m3. The new tanks are 10% larger than the old tanks, 12 meters in diameter and approximately 18 meters high. The old tanks will be removed, and the new ones are planned to be hoisted and then lowered into position in the same location as the old tanks. The above two projects are expected to be implemented during the next upcoming Koeberg outages. The unit one outage is due to commence on 26 February 2018 and unit two is due to commence on 24 September 2018.

Lesedi new Koeberg site officesLesedi have recently obtained new site offices located on the Koeberg site. These offices will soon be branded with the Lesedi colours and will be used by Lesedi personnel when implementing projects at Koeberg.

ProjectsAnkerlig Transmission Koeberg Second Supply (ATKSS) Project

We are pleased to announce that on 30th June 2017 Lesedi was awarded another Balance of Plant (BOP) Gas Turbine Power Station contract for the Ankerlig Transmission Koeberg Second Supply (ATKSS) Project.

The ATKSS Project is a new off-site 132 kV back-up gas turbine power station, replacing the existing Acacia gas turbine power station for Eskom. It will be built next to the Ankerlig Gas Turbine Power Station in Atlantis. The new power station will supply power to Koeberg Nuclear Power Station in the event of a 132kV loss to safety related power critical plants needed when it is necessary to shut Koeberg Nuclear Power Station down safely or recover to production status.

The Principal Contractor (EPC) is Group Five Power with Lesedi Nuclear Services being one of the major subcontractors, whom will have the responsibility for the design of all Civil and Structural works together with the Design, Procurement and Construction of the complete Balance of Plant. The starting date of the project was the 8th of May 2017 with completion scheduled for the 1st quarter in 2019. We will be using our recently updated Industrial Project Management as well as Engineering Processes and Procedures. Safety NewsAreva AuditAreva audited Lesedi in June 2017 to the standard NSQ 100, this was to maintain our approval status with Areva, and also to confirm as part of the SGR joint venture project, that all members of the JV are still compliant with RD0034 level 1 standard. The audit was conducted over a three day period in Cape Town and Johannesburg. The audit went well with no non-conformities being noted. Three areas for improvement were noted for Lesedi, and action for these improvements have been taken.

The ISO standards were updated in 2015 and Lesedi has a three year period in which to update its IMS, the updated standard ISO 9001 2015, ISO 14001 2015, and what was the old standard OHS 18001 will shortly become ISO 45001- this is currently in draft format, but will be issued shortly. The Lesedi new IMS policy manual adjusted to the new standards is in for final review and will be issued shortly.

Human Factors Training for the Nuclear IndustryHuman Factors Training was scheduled companywide for the17th -19th of July, this is extremely important training forall our operations, nuclear and non-nuclear. The interesting content focuses on how the mind deals with the informationit receives, and how it processes it into actions in a safetycritical environment. Calling on the expertise of all our nuclear professionals, the next internal nuclear culture survey is being planned for 25th July 2017. We would like to drive our nuclear safety culture forward, by fostering a questioning and learning attitude to radiation protection and nuclear safety, and to discourage complacency, always remembering the nuclear motto “protect the core”.

Lesedi contributesLesedi proud to contribute to first peer review of the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) in South AfricaThe International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is the world’s central intergovernmental forum for scientific and technical cooperation in the nuclear field. It works for the safe, secure and peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology, contributing to international peace and security and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. In the framework of its support to nuclear knowledge management activities in Member States, the IAEA conducted a two-week mission in June 2017 to review Design for New Nuclear Technology Management Master’s Programme in South Africa. The peer review, held under the Agency’s International Nuclear Management Academy (INMA) initiative, was conducted at the North-West University in Potchefstroom and the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, from 12 to 23 June 2017.

Shane Pereira, Business Development Executive for Lesedi and Gerharddu Plessis presented Lesedi to the peer review group at WITS University.

Involving academia is a key component of managing knowledge for the successful development of a competent workforce for national nuclear energy programmes. The INMA is an IAEA-facilitated collaboration framework with leading nuclear engineering and science universities that aim to establish a high quality master’s programmes for current and future managers in the nuclear sector.

Professor James Larkin of the University of the Witwatersrand added: “The programme was designed with support from the industry, and is aimed at those who would be taking leading roles throughout the entire lifecycle of a nuclear power plant, from conception through to decommissioning.” Following peer review missions at the University of Manchester, United Kingdom, in 2015, and the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, Russian Federation, in 2016, this was the first undertaking in South Africa, visiting two universities simultaneously.

The final report of the peer review will be provided to the two South African universities in about three months with recommendations for possible improvements.

Social responsibilityLesedi staff lends a helping hand to Knysna

As the storms were raging over Cape Town in June 2017, Knysna, along the Garden Route, was hit by a breakout of 26 different wildfires, which tore into the town, damaging homes and flora in the region. Lives were lost and homes were destroyed. People were left destitute and desperately in need of assistance. Since the incident, companies and the general public have been reaching out to this community offering support by donating non-perishable groceries, clothing, blankets and shelter, etc.

Nicky van der Poel, Director Outage Services for Lesedi commented:“As an organisation, we had an obligation to get involved and support the cause. We appealed to staff to lend a helping hand and to assist us as an organisation to have a positive impact in the lives of the people in Knysna. We always encourage staff to contribute to local causes and act in unison towards a common goal and to feel good about giving back. Staff donated canned foods, second hand or unwanted adult, children and infant clothing and items such as prams and strollers.

“The Knysna fire was one of the worst natural disasters in the country’s history - but amidst the destruction, South Africans from across the country united to support the communities in Knysna. We are proud to have been part of this wave of goodwill.”

Celebrating Madiba’s legacy:Warm hearts, warm foodTo celebrate Nelson Mandela day, Lesedi employees spent time in the communities of Atlantis and Joe Slovo Park in the Western Cape. The team arranged a soup kitchen at the Orion organisation in Atlantis and provided warm meals to more than 500 poverty stricken residents. Lesedi believes it is important to give back to disadvantaged communities close to the company’s operations in the Western Cape. Lesedi has developed a long term sustainable relationship with the Orion Organisation in Atlantis. Orion has grown as a model of hope to as many as 3000 disabled individuals who have passed through their doors since its inception. Joe Slovo Park is a mixture of fixed houses and shacks next to Montague Gardens in Milnerton. General living conditions are very poor and children, women and the elderly are particularly vulnerable.

The day enriched the lives not only for those that received, but to those that had the privilege to give back to the community.
